I have to doubt the credibility of Eric Holder.

"In October 2009, the Department of Homeland Security removed the authority of Arpaio's 160 federally trained deputies to make immigration arrests in the field. Despite the actions of the Department of Homeland Security, Arpaio has maintained that he will still pursue illegal aliens under Arizona state law" I like the fact that he stood up to this country's soft stance on illegal immigration and said he will lock up illegal immigrants himself.

Traditionaly when a person desires to become an officer he/she goes in front of a committee of ex-chiefs which is sort of like an interview. My issue with this is there could be some of the ex-chief's who were not compotent officers themselves but made it through the ranks because of a backwards system. It is also where the peronality phase begins because if the majority of them dimply do not like you for whatever reason you are done. You can be a clueless nitwit ( and I have seen a few in my day) yet if you are popular you will get the nomination and probably get voted in and will be responsible for making life and death decisions.

Tom once again you raise a good point. I have commented numerous times in other forums with regards to selection and training of officers. I believe the present system needs much improvement. I would like to see a forum on how to improve it. I believe a start would be to do away with elections. It is truly a popularity contest in fact an embarasment. We could do better.

Two questions. 1. Who is auditing the State of NY? 2. Are private fire companies subjected to audits?

Seth congratulations to you and your wife. Enjoy the time when your child is young as the time goes fast. My son is graduating high school this year. Start saving for college now!!!

I am the parent of a 17 year old Senior Varsity baseball player. This hits me very hard. May these young men rest in peace and may God watch over those left behind. Hug your kids today.

Sickens me to death. Shows where this country is headed.

Unfortunately yes I have seen plenty of stupid drivers in my day. More unfortunate they were operaters of emergency vehicles. Scary thing is they still drive.

How does a district get audited? Is it done on a random basis? Is it a result of a complaint?
-
What are both the initial training requirements/recommendations as well as for on-going training requirements for the bail out system?

I can not understand why one would want to kill a child. May this innocent young boy rest in peace and I hope the garbage that did this are found and allowed to rot.

I don't support this bill due to enough time and money has been wasted on legislation on incentives to keep volunteers and I feel the leadership in volunteer departments need to rise to the occasion and address the issue and stop looking for someone else to solve thier problems. I also feel incentives should be at the local level. Now I have a question. I live in a community that is protected by a volunteer department. Doesn't my tax dollars support the SAFER grants that help fund career staff in career departments? Couldn't I use the same argument?

I guess I will rain on this parade. This to me seems like another feel good piece of legislation. With all the "incentives" that have been passed on federal, state, and local level there is still a decline volunteers and those who are joining have limited time to give. I don't see this working.

Sounds like Mr. Feiner wants to create an even bigger beaucracy than what we have now. Mr. Feiner should worry about Greenburgh and let those who have a clue worry what to do with Westchester.

Yes you can FOIL most things. I also have an opinion from the NYS Comptrollers Office that says you can FOIL private fire companies within a district as well. If you want send me your e-mail at amanc2196@aol.com and I will send it to you.

Business as usual in the land of politics.

I can not believe a department would allow a 16 year old to be an interior firefighter. I am all for junior programs and do encourage them but at that age they should not be allowed to enter burning buildings or any other dangerous situations. I do believe at that age they should be mentored and trained and disciplined. Training under controlled conditions is one thing but to put them in actual incidents is dangerous and wreckless. And to add fireground officers should not have to babysit. We did enough with some of the senior guys As a former chief who had 16-18 year olds I along with my officers were very careful that these kids were not placed in harms way. My department had strict rules about thier function on the incident ground. I was often criticized by certain people that I would not allow them to do more on the fireground. My response was I do not want to be the one to have to knock on a parents door to tell them thier child was killed because we failed to safeguard them. At the end of the day they are just kids.
