  8. "Instead of alerting to the danger of melting face pieces, why not spend the money, time and effort developing one that is more resistant to intense heat and flame? " There you go again Cap making sense again...
  9. A boating expert on the news last night said there should of been no more than 10 people on the boat. Now with the understanding that there could be other factors that caused the accident as well we will have to wait untill the investigation is done. I am sure the lawyers are lining up now. This will no doubt be a huge case. God Bless those young lives that were taken.
  10. "For everyone out there in case you haven't figured it out, Chief Raftery is one of the most credible posters in regard to firefighting who has ever posted on this site. I wish you would post more Chief! " Couldn't agree more!!!
  11. If I am not mistaken the original FF1 was supposed to be 150 hours which in my opinion was a step in the right direction and as an instructor during that transaction I was very pleased to see something more challenging and useful than the Basic and Intermdiate FF class. But there was the usual battle cry from many leaders in the volunteer fire service as well as FASNY that we can't make it to hard for volunteers so it was watered down to what it is now. There is nothing more important than training. There is nothing more important than knowing how to use the skills needed to get the job done and keep you safe. I have to laugh when I see a parade thread and I see departments going to 10 + parades. That's alot of time that can be devoted to keeping you and your brothers/sisters safe. This is not to take away from the many departments that spend alot of time in training nor am I knocking parades, FASNY or anyone else as FASNY has done alot of good and parades do have a place but it is 2012 we need to wake up.
  12. I have been in a union for almost 25 years untill I retired. I also served my unions's contract negoation committee. I could remeber working 6 years with out a contract more recent 3 years. What I dont understand and of course I don't know what is going on behind closed doors but why wouldn't the union agree to keep talking? The contract expired last night. I fully understand the unions concern about the pension as that is what we all work for but I believe that they should continue to talk and work to come to an agreement. Perhaps there are some Con-Ed workers on here that can shed more light. I wish them luck.
  13. Whatever happened to playing basketball, baseball, stickball, dodgeball, riding bikes...etc???
  14. "District books are open, but company books are not. When the district cuts the company a check there is no longer any accountability." Not sure if this is true. There was a court case many years ago..dont remember it exactly but I believe it was in Orange County regarding denial of membership based on being a female and fire companies being considered public agencies because they accept donations. If anyone remembers the case please cite it.
  15. I had Donny as an insructor for many classes and also worked with him as an instructor at the training center..always willing to share what he knew. My thoughts and prayers go to his family and the WPFD. May he rest in peace.
  16. Doesn't surprise me at all. Many kids today are disrespectful thanks to lack of discipline at home. I can't imagine what my parents would of done to me if I ever did that to someone, especially an elderly woman. I can tell you my son would of been lit up like a Xmas tree if he ever engaged in that kind of behavior.
  17. He saved his daughter and tried to save the piece of garbage who was molesting her and could of possibly killed her. His actions were justified and hopefully won't see any furthur legal implications. And I agree if this was NY...
  18. I for one could not sit there and watch someone's home burn down.
  19. Being there were no replies to this topic I wish to open it again for discussion as we need to discuss recruiting and retention. What are departments doing? Was the FASNY weekend successful for any departments?
