Moose you have been given good advice here so I won't repeat what others have said other than to say go for it. In my experiences as a former chief you are always going to run into problems. Happens everywhere. Now you will be in the driver's seat and will have the opportunity to change things for the better. Never be afraid to reach out to the senior members of your department or network with other chiefs for advice. I wish you the best of luck!!!

This is tough. This will take years and billions to repair. How do you plan for something like this. As far as housing people doesn't FEMA have plans in place for temporary housing such as trailers? Weren't they used in Katrina? Can the infra-structure be rebuilt? Is it worth the risk? I am sure those who live there may say yes but what will the insurance companies say? How about the Army Corps of Engineers? I have seen the emergency services in all capacities, other charitable groups and private citizens step up to the occasion but what about our federal government?

And that is my concern. If they get hurt they may not be covered under Volunteer Firefighters Benefit Law.

You would be covered because you were dispatched which is the criteria for coverage.

I could be wrong but work being performed to a private or public trust corporation is not covered under VFBL. Is PSEG considered either of these? And this request is coming directly from PSEG and not through any mutual aid system. Again, I could be wrong and welcome any input to the contrary.

Question. Will they be covered under VFBL if they are injured? Is this considered line of duty? Would hate to see a brother hurt and left out to dry due to non-coverage.

Do these companies operate independent of FDNY? Do they work with FDNY? Where do they train? I remember years ago when I taught at the county training center a couple of Avation guys in my basic ff class.

People lost lives, homes, no power, gas, water, some areas can't flush toilets, flooding, resources needed from out of state, disaster declaration, looting...yeah...bad idea!
