Its more about qualifications or there lack of. Rye's residents just need to ask questions, but like in any community they are blind as to whats really going on.

NFD2004, this would be an extremely funny video if it weren't so true and I keep wondering how much worse this situation could get. I am afraid of the answer. As a resident of the city I am ashamed of what is happening.

Understand this, and I speak for myself. I have no problem with vollunteers as I was one myself. Lets cut through this crap and get to our manning issue. In Port Chester you have a deep volunteer base. In Rye we don't. Instead of worrying who is going to drive the"spare" ladder around and possibly responding to calls, the real issue is getting to the scene in a timely and safe manner and helping the first due apparatus. Don't thin out our response but having one or more people waste time rolling a ladder when we need them at the scene. I am very surprised with you since you are very familiar with our situation, but you continue to fuel this fire. No pun intended. Enough said

You can "staff" it all you want. Its a "spare" rig, not a volunteer rig. Big difference between driving it and operating it also. There should be more effort in expanding the membership then there is "qualifing" people to "drive" a piece of equipment that won't be responding anywhere,anytime soon. My 2 cents

TL2L31, To clarify the matter, Rye has a spare engine and a spare ladder. Engine 194 was not pump tested nor does it carry adequate hose or SCBA. The only volunteer rig Rye has is Utility 39. Plain and simply. Sorry for being on the wrong thread.

Actually Pred1, Turk182 although somewhat sarcastic is right. You just can't keep purchasing equipment and passing it of as additional coverage when you barely have "qualified"manpower to operate them. I am knocking no one, but money can be spent better elsewhere. Either you acquire a strong volunteer base, or you hire additional personel. The municipality in which we work in does not have a substantial base of dedicated volunteers. In many communities, especially ours ,the ones that volunteer more often than not, can't afford to stay. Sorry for the rant but the old addage of "You can't get blood from a stone" is what really needs to be addressed. Buying (retaining) apparatus is completely mind boggling when you don't have the bodies in the first place. Just my 2 cents. This post is probably in the wrong area, Sorry.

Just curious what happens to anyones old equipment both apparatus and other hardware. Is it donated, sold, ect??

I was just curious if manpower was a problem during the storm on 1/19 for both vollie and career Depts. The reason why I bring this to attention is that it happened so quickly and want to know how it panned out??
