Well stupid me, I let my subscription of FAJ run out and I've been buying it at one of may favorite newsstands in New Haven for the past few months. But guess what?? They stopped carrying it. Does any one know of a newsstand that carries FAJ around where I can pick up a copy? If you can help me out it would be great. And no I don't want to wait for the back issues to be available through FAJ. (and Yes I re-signed up for the mag too.)

Many departments utilize their "trucks" or aerials for those not following my terminology since rescue and ladder companies performed almost the same functions. Another is space available on the other rigs versus this piece of apparatus and also the location of the apparatus in the town / city / district compared to the other stations they operate. Also too one may decide to place the rescue tools on the quint since this turk may be able to carry more manpower to an incident (I'm speculating here on your example). This may be only a temporary solution for this department. If this is a permanent solution, then it has to be re-examined. But you do bring up a valid point on giving one piece of apparatus too many functions. Prime example, there is a volunteer fire department out west that is a Class 1 department. They have I believe four trucks equipped with a large capacity pump, at least a 2000 gallons of water, two foam tanks, a large amount of five inch hose, several preconnects, extrication and rescue tools and to top it off a 65' telesquirt aerial device. (I'm going off memory from a fire apparatus article I read a few years back, somethings may not be correct). Now for out west, these super-trucks might be ok since they can navigate their district with ease since construction out there is larger, bigger streets and nothing in comparison to the town / city layouts of the North East. This truck to me is too busy and could be a nightmare. When a department / company designs their next new fire truck they have to decide what function it should have and what hazards it may face. I think concepts of Quints, Quads, rescue pumpers, pumper-tankers (2000 - 3000 gallons of water) standard pumpers, aerials, TDAs and towers are fine but when you try for the sake of putting 10 pounds of crap in a one pound bag then you asking for trouble. Mainly chassis and suspension problems and over weight road issues.

I headed down there yesterday, both nice rigs and well though out. Nice to meet all you down there. Joe

Yes, K-9 officer usually refers to the dog and K-9 handler refers to the P.O. who the K-9 is assigned to.

So, Kingsbury has black fire trucks with a purple scroll with their name on it. People just like to be different I suppose, this purple-People-Eater-Pierce is not the color I want, to lilacey in shade.

Was there a bell in the old cupola of the old building? Hopefully it was saved if there was one. Good luck withyour new home!

If memory serves me correctly the old E-One demonstrator, the Spartan cab tower ladder out on City Island and one of the Spartan chassis pumpers donated after 9-11 all have a raised cab. I'm not 100% sure on this, just going off some buff info that I'll have to look up. As for the reason, i know Seagrave was looking to get rid of the Commander line of fixed cabs for awhile if I am not mistaken, when were were taking to Seagrave when we speced out out new truck, it was mentioned to us that the fixed cab chassis was being discontinued and that was over a year ago.

Keep the politics out off "da firehouse". I don't favor a discussion here about it. Things could get pretty heated in my opinion.

What year is it? was it a 1968 model year?

Look at some of the names used by the old NYFD volunteers, same premise. Get the old Webster dictionary out and look up the definitions, you'll be surprised! Just like they old vollies took pride in thier rigs, they also tried to out do each other with thier company names. The some of the most used fire company names were Hope, Friendship, Vigilant, Alert, Cataract, Deluge, Franklin and Washington. As for Intercourse and Blue Ball (no "s") those are towns in Amish county area of PA. Try looking up some town names out west, some of them are not "normal either!

Though a good player, it was money from the get go for him. I won;t miss him, he didn't do that much for the team. The Yanks will be a lot better without his since we can get better talent from the majors and the minors.

I wonder if this was supposed to be a prank that went bad or was bad intentions from the get go.

Placing the pump controls in a compartment does not give you added space. Pierce's PUC configuration does shorten eh wheel base up but you still had a pump housing though its half under an extended cab. I think its just advertising.

MACK C-95's were built in the late 50's to about 1968 after Mack purchased the design / rights from Ahrens Fox. CF's were first built in 1968 if memory serves me correctly.

Usually, especially more recently, photographers have been blocking out licence plates of vehicles so that owners have privacy or that a fraudulent licence plate cannot be reproduced with the letter / number combo. Usually you see this more on privately owned cars. More than likely its just an oversight by the photographer who posted the NUSAR pics.

We send out a full assignment for all smoke investigations except if there area reports that the smoke is coming from a wooded area, then its two engines and our squad.

As a dispatcher / firefighter / EMT if you hear something on the scanner and start heading to the call before you are dispatched then yes it is a problem, illegal no but a whole liability issue. There is nothing wrong with sliding to the firehouse (no lights), pulling the truck out onto the apron and assembling a crew but to start responding because of what you heard over the scanner and god something happens awful to you as you area responding before you are called out then that ugly liability issue starts to come out and play. Take for example this, a few years back I remember hearing about a call where the members of a particular fire company heard on the scanner a call they should have been dispatched too on the police band. They mounted up and went lights and sirens, and during their response the truck got into a mva, minor thankfully and no injuries. Come to find out there was no actual call for this town but what the members of this company heard was a radio skip from another town's police dept with a similar street name and address. Now what didn't they do, check to see with their dispatch center to see if there was a call. Needless to say the driver of the truck was issued a summons and subsequently suspended as was the officer of the company. The department was sued by the driver of the car the firetruck hit and it was a whole mess. In the scenario you stated, what if the pd arrived on scene and the car was just overheating and your going BTTW? If you think that there might be something significant and there is a delay in dispatch then heading towards the firehouse with traffic, nice and smooth would be ok. The one thing everyone hates is a self-dispatcher to a call.

Looks like I'm going to have to change from my old bag-phone and car phone to one of these new fangled jobs!

Your best side???? LOL I had to say it before someone else did! Just joking buddy! I don't think there are any schools that do pompier ladder training anymore up here in CT but I may be mistaken. I never climber one of those but I've hears stories from old timers who used to scale buildings with those things. Yikes!

I subscribed to both and for a little while, both magazines seemed to lacked a lot. I think it mainly has to do with both mag's publishers. A lot of advertising and less tech stuff. They both seem to be getting better but to me they still have a long way to get back to what they were a few years ago. Fire ENgineering has always been the techie / instructional trade magazine while Firehouse has become a more informal view point and discussion mag, also buffy as well. Both have been very good in the past and I hope they return to thier tradition content.

London has an open roof stadium and the weather there is a lot worse than here in the Northeast. Dumb move, I like soccer, rugby, et al but this is rediculous. No wonder why I don't watch the game like I used to. Walter Camp invented our version of football here in the states and perfected it in New Haven. He pre-season or exhibition games are ok but not a championship.
