We experienced this in my home town a few years ago right around the conrer from my volly house. There is a reason why they call that section of town "Windy Hill". When you combine strong windys, a heavy fire load, old mill housing that are built with no more than 10 feet or less of space betweeen the strucutres equals a really bad day. We lost three houses in a row and could have lost the whole block if we didn't get there in time. From the time the first call came in to the first arriving unit about 4 minuts later, the first house was fully involved, the second house's top floor and attic was going and the third just started to catch fire. The winds just drove the fire from one house to the next. The fire started at the first house due to an improperly discarded cigarette which landed near a plastic gas can. We had five engines, two trucks and a rescue on scene for our incident (2nd alarm equivilant) a good water supply and more than enough manpower but still it was a heck of a fire-fight to contain it.

It's not a bad place, its home away from home. But thankfully we have drive through bays, backing in through the facade pillars can throw you off!! LOL

Good luck on your retirement Rick!

As Mahantucket is my place of employment, there have been some changes. The police chief / public safety director has resigned and both the fire department and police departments are now considered separate entities once again. Both top officers of the PD and FD will each report directly to the Tribal Council's Public Safety Committee. MPTN police chief resigns: http://www.theday.com/article/20120531/NWS01/120539876/-1/zip06 Mohegan Tribal ready for roll: http://www.theday.com/article/20120603/NWS01/306039919/-1/zip06&town=ledyard&template=zip06art Any other questions, you can PM me.

City Island is so remote from the rest of the department. The next closest firehouses are Engine 66 / Ladder 61 on Acsh Loop near Aldrich; Engine 97 at Astor and Fenton; Squad 61 on Wiliamsbridge Road ; and Engine 89 / Ladder 50 on Bruckner Ave. Also since FDNY does respond as a first responder it is deamed okay that an ambulance can come from a distance. You have medical assistance on scene with the CFRs. This happens in every major city in the country and is not uncommon. Heck, when I was dispatching, I had a EMS call in Lighthouse Park in New Haven and the closest ambulance was a mutual aid rig coming from Branford - 15 minutes away. NY10570 hit it right on the nail with an ambulance being a luxury. Also how many EMS calls are handled on City Island yearly? This could be why an ambulance isn't stationed here, they may be in the same boat as Ladder 53. But also maybe FDNY EMS has units in the park during the summer time so technically they can be "stationed" near City Island during the peak months. I'm only assuming and would like to know the correct information if someone has it. In regards to Ladder 53, with the other engine and ladder comanies coming from a great distance, its understandable why the residents are fighting to keep them. Regardless what type of rigs they are running, its two fire compaines on the island, 10 to 12 guys on a shift that are ready to respond. If they get a worker, they are covered by the 2-in 2-out rule and have enough manpower to start making an effective fire attack. That is a luxury! With a loss of a company and only having 5 to 6 guys with one rig, well now your really streching it! Where I work we have 4 guys on shift and our closest mutual aid unit is 10 to 20 minutes down the road. Its not a great feeling pulling up on house fire and not knowing how long its going to be until the next unit arrives!!! Trust me I've been there a couple times in my careeer.

Everything is so GREEN! And you better get going on putting "New" before "Fairfield"! Some people might have a case of white and 5 cases of red paint ready if it heads south! Good luck with the new engine!

Heard today that is was caused by a bad LSD trip. YOU THINK??????

Seth, just noticed a problem with the graphite collor. When you have "likes" listed at the top of a post, it over runs the first line of a member's post. I like the color though!
-
I was thinking the same thing when I saw this. There are industrial rigs I have seen with a dual front wheel set and also large Bronto's in Canada and Europe with this chassis set up.

We can take off the invisible fence collar before you go. They do the same for me when i leave the Naugy Valley!

When my father was alive and battleing cancer, he had to carry a card with him at all times because he was receiving radiation treatment. Even with the medical radioactive dyes and stuff for CT Scans ect, he had to have the card. And that was back in the late 80s and early 90s.

I want you all to watch this if you haven't already. this is posted on Statter 911 from Watsonville, California. It's a transient hotel fire where the first due companies were faced with a (blank)-storm. FD, civilians and (OMG) cops making rescues and on hose lines before the 2nd due arrived. http://statter911.co...scues/#comments Now, when the proverbial brown waste hist the oscullating cooling device, what are you going to do???? Make people watch or utilize what you have safely? You decide, let people die or make an attempt?

Awesome!! Many a night after working second shift we headed over to the firehouse and watched The Bravest sucking down Snapples and eating those health cheese fries from the Valley Diner!

Very true Barry, that is why I stated "in addition too" in my last sentance of my post though I started out "in theory", whihc was a bad choice in wording on my part. I knew I was missing something else. I've been out of dispatching for 5 years so I'm not up to snuff with everything.
-
Not as far as I know. Usually all dispatch falls under the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) standards, not NFPA, mainly because ythe majority of dispatch centers are multi-service entities (ie. police, fire, ems, ect.). Therefore in theory, NFPA standards that are existing would be adopted pertaining to fire response calls in addition to the APCO standards.

Just saw A black over red aerial on 95 NB in Westbrook CT lettered Tarrytown. Is C&S the dealer? (*)

Police departments have been fining for false alarms with central station monitoring services now for years. It's about time the FDs started doing this as well. The problem isn't the the alarm companies is the owners of the building who do not follow up with having their systems checked out when there are problems. (*)
-
Seth, if the article you read is the same one I am thinking of, it was about the ALF aero-chiefs and not the Pitman Snorkle. The Aero-Chiefs were known to be bulky, didnlt have a good foot print for the jack spread and would tip over, especially the larger lengths, if the operator did not foloow the correct operation guidelines. During the 70s, Snorkle was purchased by Figgie and ALF began using them.

Truck 1 is up for replacement soon. I've heard rumors but nothing confirmed yet on its replacement or time frame.

Depending on the operations of a specific aerial, under normal circumstances and outrigger that lifts off the ground on the opposite side of the truck where you are working off of is normal. Again depending on the manufacturer's operating specifications. For example, if you work off the right side and the left outrigger lifts off the ground (1 or both) that is normal. This should not cause the aerial from working properly. The problem you are describing sounds like you have a serious micro switch problem and you'll need to override the controls or keep doing what you have been doing. For example, we have a 1995 LTI 102' rear mount at work. A few weeks ago doing out weekly inspection on it the right rear out rigger would not deploy down. It would engage to retract up, but no power going down. All the other outriggers deployed and retracted normally. Come to find out, the problem was a ground issue on the left side (the left rear outrigger spot light was out and the key to the problem). The ground contact was cleaned up and re-secured, the left spot light went back on and the right rear outrigger deployed normally again. Get this problem checked out immediately if it hasn't been done already. Also make sure you follow what the specifications for setting up the tower is through the manual provided by Pierce. Some trucks you need only to take the bubble out of the tires, others you need to take the truck totally off the ground. It could be that the way everyone sets the truck up is totally wrong from what the original specifications outlined. Also make sure you utilize your jack pads!!! This could also cause a problem if they are not used. I don't like the comment that the Pierce dealer / mechanic gave you. In the words of Col Potter "That's a load of horse manure!".

Thanks for the information and pictures. As for the response time up to Milford, I'm not sure what it was or if it got cancelled enrout or what.
