"Potatoe, Potato" They will still be using the VHF for a while during the transition. As of right now what I have read there are no mobile UHF radios in the trucks as of yet. Needless to say this project will take a while to to transition over. As for the end result, I believe they will continue to simultaneously broadcast over both radio systems then eventually abandon the VHF entirely.

The rule of thumb I was always told by the Mack enthusiast and those who worked at the old Mack dealer in West Haven told me the gold bulldogs were placed on an ALL MACK TRUCK (engine, transmission, body, cab, chassis). If the truck was not entirely built by Mack or the body was built by another manufacturer, then the bulldog was silver. This holds true today and after 1984 when Mack stopped building bodies fire truck bodies, no CF. MR, or MC had a gold bulldog, those were reserved for the all Mack over the road chassis. This is what I was told and I know there are many variations to the story.

The last picture, what is the controller box off the main console to the right used for?
-
It is from Vernon,CT fire department. Truck 541 is stationed up at Vernon Station 4 in the Rockville section of the town. Rockville used to be a separate city in the town of Vernon until the 1980s until the two governments merged together. Also in the 1980s both the Rockville Fire Department merged with the Vernon Fire Department thuse the two Rockville station became Stations 441 and 541 (41 is the department number). They company is know as the Snipsic Hook and Ladder Company. Truck 541 has been OOS for a while now due to some due to electrical problems and should be back in service shortly. Nichols Fire Apparatus was in Wallingford.

I'm just wondering what departments still use the old "Gamewell" telegraph alarm box systems. My home department still uses them and we currently have a Dictaphone horn and a siren in each section of town to "sound out" the box numbers. Each firehouse in town also has a tape punch and alarm bell hooked up to the system. I know of several towns in CT that utilize this system in one way or another. Also if your department once had the old Gamewell system, when was it placed out of service. Though it is old technology and is expensive to maintain, in my opinion it is still a great system to have in place. Look at NYC during the most recent blackout. The areas that still had manual pull boxes were well covered for responses. Just though this would be an interesting topic to discuss.

Cogs, the controller is still lactated on the truck floor at Eagles and still uses a back up generator off FD-10 during power outages!!!! LOL! Also too were you still around for the Latex Foam fire when box 34 and the Dictaphones on the building gave their last dirge when the compressor let go?? Can you say “BLAHHHHHhhhhhhhhh!” Rob, the video that you posted of the tape punch and bell is the exact sound that echoes on my truck floor. You can actually hear the bell all the way down the street with the doors closes in the barn. Cogs could attest to that.

Hey All! Glad to see the brothers and sisters coming up here for some fun. I will be talking to my chief and co-workers about seeing if we can hopefully give you a tour of our station and rigs. Though I am scheduled to be off duty that day I will make sure that I am there to help show you around (I get out of work that am). Hope to see you all soon! Izzy

Just an FYI - Bridgeport's case and New Haven's case are different due to the circumstances around the tests. However a ruling on either will have a great impact on future tests. If yo go to www.connpost.com look up the article on line. Also there should be a link on the IAFF or the UPFFA.org website as well. I haven't checked yet.

I agree too Goose and I'm a firm believer in EMD. But the problem is that little negligence and abandoment problem the lawyers love to eat it up. Hey if its implimented right hopefully it would be a win and stop the abuse and give those who need the proper care priority. Lets hope it works, you guys and gals in EMS get beat up pretty back with stacked BS calls. I know I worked that end and seen it too.

One Fifty One, I understand your concern and to answer you question, no we are not ahead of the game. It was posted on the family's website they had through St. Raphel's Hospital that he had passed as this was the link for all who were concerned with his condition after the accident. It was also posted on another fire service website here in CT and also through the New Haven Register early this morning. Again I know your just watching out to make sure things are done properly. I just saw the tenative arrangments for Brother Reardon's wake and funeral services; The wake is to take place on Sunday April 26th, 2009 from 2pm to 7pm at Monahan's Funeral Home, 21 Wooster Place in New Haven, CT. The funeral is to take place on Monday April 27th, 2009 at 10am at St. Lawrence Church on Main Street in West Haven, CT. The burial is to follow at All Saints Cemetary in North Haven, CT. According to the information I have and what TLENARTjr has heard, the particulars concerning the firematic logistics are still in the planning stages. More to follow.

Basically what they are talking about is implementing EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatch) protocols. Every dispatch center that handles ambulance and CFR's should be doing this. This cuts down on a number of things, for excample; 1 - Abuse of calling an ambulance for a ride to the hospital for routine appointments. It frees up an ambulance for true emergencies. 2 - Cutting down on priority responses and sending units with traffic. 3 - Cutting having to send a paramedic if the medical emergency only requires EMT level care. 4 - Being able to re-route units to a priority call. I know I'm preaching to the choir but this needs to be don. Look at the article Seth posted a few weeks ago about how the same 9 people going to the hospital in emergency mode constituted for what an 1/8th of the calls? Emergency services promoted 911 so much back in the day everyone calls it for every minor thing. Don't get me wrong yes people should have access to pre hospital care. The only problem I see though is the dispatchers telling the people to go to the hospital and they are not getting an amblance. That gets into the whole legal neglect thing.

Services have not been announced as of yet. When I hear what the arrangements are, I will post them.
