  1. Another tool in the bag if needed. Using it once will pay for it!
  2. Seagrave in the early 1990s offered engine or rescue configuration medical transport cabs. Sycamore Township in Ohio still has two medic transport engines in service along with two standard ambulances. http://sycamoretownship.org/Apparatus.cfm
  3. Though it was Wisconsin Ave, the Apple store gave it away. Here is the satellite view of the buildings in question. It appears definitely to be a entrance way. between the buildings. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=1229+Wisconsin+Avenue+NW+,+Washington,+DC+20007&hl=en&ll=38.906066,-77.062541&spn=0.000566,0.000862&sll=38.905946,-77.062826&sspn=0.004525,0.006899&vpsrc=6&t=h&z=20
  4. I believe this is not a house but either an enclosed stairway or entrance way to another building in the rear or to one of them in the front. DC's property layout is much different than a lot of urban areas we are accustomed to. If you go to my thread on the Friendship Association DC Fire Museum thread, you will see a model of DC's old style response. The display shows that each typical block has access to what I would call a courtyard for the backs of the buildings. DCFD will place an engine company in the rear courtyard area to protect the rear or attack the fire from there. They have performed and pre-planned this tactic for many years. This dates back to the old two piece engine company days (pumper and hose wagon).
  5. Everyone has a misconception about why new vehicles (in this case talking about aerial ladders trucks) have dual rear axles. The reason is for the distribution of the weight of the truck, not because of the aerial device, ect. The DOT has specific guidelines manufacturers must follow to make heavy-duty truck road worthy and distribute the weight to meet the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gross_vehicle_weight_rating). Now having that said, when you take in the weight of the truck chassis, cab, aerial, and also the equipment and the combine weight average of personnel on the rig, if far exceeds what the suspension system can handle per the standards (same with tankers, heavy rescues, ect.) So in plain English if a (any) truck fully loaded upon design of construction is expected to carry XXXX amount of weight while in service then determines the number of axles required to distribute the weight over the truck chassis to the tires. Each axle has a rating, fronts axles on fire apparatus are typically 20,000 to about 40,000 pounds while a rear axle can go up to 75,000 pounds (using an average, not exact). So lets say we take a ladder truck with a 40,000 lbs rated front axle and a 75,000 lbs rated single rear axle, your truck can safely carry on the road 115,000 pounds total weight. If its more than that like with aerial ladders, engine tankers and tankers, you add typically the same rated axle to the rear of the truck, thus increasing the GVWR another 75,000 lbs, thus the truck now has a GVWR of 190,000 lbs. Those trucks in Boston that have single axles now are older models that were placed into service and have since been refurbished before the new federal standards. If that truck was built to today's standards, then the trucks would be required to have dual rear axles for a proper GVWR. If they are refurbished then they still can have a single rear axle. Just as the case with Pelham and Darien Aerialscope tower ladders, they were able to engineer the 75' TLs to have a single rear axle on new chassis like the old Macks, the total weight of the truck (including the aerial device) falls under the total GVWR. If they were built brand new, the total weigh of the truck would exceed the GVWR because of the set standards of new apparatus construction .
  6. Thanks Truck for explaining it, that is all the stuff I was looking for.
  7. John I'm taking this tongue and cheek with a smirk but like the paid / vollie fight, it's not worth it either. We all know that. I also agree with the rest of your post especially "lift an inch......crib an inch." We are all taught that in the basics.
  8. Paul's second son's name is Dan and they have reconciled supposedly. There was something going on a few months ago with the forclosure with SR. trying to build another building next door under a new corporation name that would run OCC. However the Orange County BOC basically down played it and denied him the building permits. The whole foreclosure thing was an effort in some reports to get a better rate, but that backfired. I'll see if I can search and find it. There hasn't been a lot of press lately on it.
  9. OKAY FOLKS HERE I GO!!!! 1 - We decided to temporarily close the topic for a few minutes as the FD vs. PD debate was getting outta hand. From this point forward if that debate is going to take place, this topic will be closed for good and if anyone complains about it, then I'll take action and start handing out detention slips (aka warnings). Or better yet, I'll show up at your front door and discuss it with you. Either way, the BS is gonna stop here (aka anti-cop / anti-fd / anti-any agency sentiment) 2 - Stay on topic, we saw what happened, like I said in my previous post this could have happened to anyone and I was also quoted on that. 3 - We can be adults here and discuss training and the events surrounding the incident. Just because some guys is wearing a different uniform than another does not matter. 4 - No slamming each other, self explanatory. If you need to PM each other with different points of view then fine, don't do it here. 5 - Strong points of view are okay to be discussed but civilly. 6 - Current posts will stay up, I'm not going to make any of them invisible. Anything that is out of line, will be removed. This is final. I have one good arm right now but the other is fine enough if I got to knock heads here. Joe
  10. Just watched that video and all I have to say is What the ??????? obviously. Yes I understand that there is a time and place for certain types of tactics with tools, especially spreaders but quite honestly that spreader was misplaced and was not on the car's frame, nor should have that tactic been executed until all cribbing was in place and the car stabilized. NYPD's ESU member did a very wrong tactic, granted it could have happened to anyone of us. But there is a time and place for anything, this was not it. Goes to show you rushing is not going to accomplish anything.

  15. USGS link to epi-center: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/Maps/US2/37.39.-79.-77.php Also Radio Reference is down.
  16. Just talked to my friend who lives in NYC. Told me not to worry, this was nothing. After all he is from Tokyo and would know about earthquakes!! LOL
  17. Link to DCFD audio: http://www.radioreference.com/apps/audio/?action=wp&feedId=2455 Sounds like they are doing first due inspections and some buildings have damage.
  18. CT OEM recommending that any building being evacuated where shaking was felt should be inspected by building inspector (you think??? LOL) Nothing yet but a bunch of AFAs in the Metro New Haven and Bridgeport area. Ansonia has a smell of gas in a structure at 200 Main Street, unknown if it is related yet.
  19. I am moving this topic from the IA to make it a discussion. CT has felt the earthquake and several buildings in the area are being evacuated and investigated for damage. Reported to be a 5.8 earthquake centered 87 miles south of DC. New Haven is evacuating the Tennis Center at this time, the State house in Hartford is also being evacuated as a precaution. NECN.COM has coverage for the New England area. I did not feel any tremors at my house, however my sister at work across town from me did feel the tremors.
  20. Very sorry to hear of your loss. He sounded like he was a man you wish you got to know and wanted to be part of the community. My condolences to his family, fellow members of Washington H & L, OFD and his friends.
  21. Well that is a CT commercial plate on it. I'll see if one of the SPAMFFA collectors has it out this way. Where you on 95 or Route 7? And which way were you going? Towards me (New Haven) or towards Westchester?
  22. I never purchased a CODE 3 model over the years though I wish I have purchased a few. Unfortunately I don't have the room to have a collection but there have been a few that have caught my eye over the years. A friend of mine has all five FDNY rescues and at one point, the members of my company were thinking about having our ALF 900 Series pumper made into a model (though the conversation lasted as long and the round of beers at the local pub!!). The details were unbelievable, especially with the Skywalker Ranch Dash pumper (large scale). It's just sad to see this line of products go out just like other model lines over the years. I used to be an avid model builder of military vehicles and kit-bashed a couple Backdraft Mack CF pumpers in the day too. And also purchased a few "Mech" models as well in the past. I just hope the hobby of building and collecting isn't dying out.
  23. They are working, thank you.
  24. Wow this thread was MOOOOO-ving!!! Glad to hear everyone and the cow is okay.
