  1. Hey Chief, got to include to that "..And I'm joining another company / department!" Heard this many of times
  2. He always made a point even before 9/11 to let everyone know he was a member oi FDNY prior to becoming famous.
  3. How far away will you be able to pick up the new system and also will the 46 frequencies still be used as a simulcast?
  4. I though this would be a fun topic to disscuss the thing we put on top of our head. We all have a favorite that we wear or which we could wear or seen designs that we though just might not ever take hold. For myself, I've always liked the New Yorkers, old and new. Currently I have a N5A with bourkes. I had to take out the ratchet since it was broken and had to cut out the ear flaps recently (don't worry I wear a hoodand have done so even before I did) since they were really comming apart. I purchased it back in '95 , it was black and repainted it when yellow per my FD SOP's as being a line officer. Needless to say this one will be retired soon. It's been through a lot but I know that it has to be hung up on the wall now. I will purchase a newer N5A with the same out of the box set up in black. I started out with the "salad bowl" style and hated it, every aspect. I then was issued a first genration 1010, which I still have, with a face shield. Except for the shield, I like it. I've always had problems with the shield being scrached up and melting during training or a call. I'm not big on shields and I do wear saftey glasses or goggles that are NFPA / OSHA rated when needed. I think borkes hold up better to the extremes and deflect water better, but not useful for extrication et. al. Also during this time I got a relative's old New Yorker that was made in the 1980's. Needless to say, Fires I wore the NY and rescues I wore the 1010. So that is what I have worn and still wear. What about everyone else? And let's post other helmets pro's and cons to help other decide what to get. Also What's on your helmet for fronts, stickers, and the trusty rubber band tools. Let's not be negative here either and knock what someone else wears, just your opinion or experiences. Izzy
  5. Maybe we should start something up like a helmet gallery to post a picture of our helmet or favorite one. What do you think? JBE, though my "other" helmet is Navy blue with a white NY on the front, I'll give you top billing oOK?
  6. What pump did you buy? Hale Waterous or Darley?
  7. Nothing through the grapevine yet. Would be interesting though to see if they will refurb the unit or replkace it with a pumper-tanker on a custom chassis or go with a straight tanker and pump on a commercial. Don't see too many Ward LaFrance Ambassador pumper tankers. New Cannan and Fort Montgomery are the only two in this area I know of.
  8. Though I'm from a small city, couple of the rural towns have small or large capacity front mounts and use them for drafting at teh source or for supply. I can see that adantage with a rural atmosphere.
  9. Don't want to be near that bathroom!!!!!
  10. Say if the NYFP goes away with the Board of Fire Insurance Underwriters, do you think that there will be any chance that the FDNY will try to incorporate the units??? They could make them part of the SOC and they really (in my opinion) an asset to them. I hate to see the Patrol go away.
  11. Worst fires I can remeber 1976 - B. F. Goodrich -Sponge Rubber in Shelton, I was about 3 or 4 years old and I remember hearing the explosion at plant #4 go. Next thing I know ny dad was running out of the door. All of Shelton, Derby, Ansonia, Monroe, Stratford and Seymour went. Bridgeport, New Haven, Cheshire, Hamden, Woodbeifgre Oerange and Waterbury sent units to help out. Took something like two or three days to put out. Was the biggest arson / domestic terror bombing in the US up until the first trade center bombing. The then owners did it cause they would get super ricch, but it back fired on them. The old timers said there were 55 gallon drums filled with gas and wrapped with TNT. There weere too many of them to count. For me recently, Latex Foam products in Ansonia, CT on May 14th, 2001. I was in my second term as a lieutenant when the factory went up. There were 2 fires, the first having been put out. The second started right after we were leaving quite sometome after. It was traced back to the drying ovens (that were originally used at Sponge Rubber in Shelton!!!) There were a few of us that went back inside to get all the workers out, since the all clear was given 2 or 3 hours before to return. We ended up getting disoriented and after what seemed like an eternity, we finnally got out, though the roof was comming down on our heads. It just went too quick. No civilians were injured at all but severeal firefighters received injuries. Again we have units from Ansonia, Derby, Seymour, Shelton, Woodbridge, Stratford, monore, New Haven, Bridgeport, Trumbull Center, oxford and Beacon Falls respond.
  12. Some times, the bull wins LOL!!
  13. They do, there is a picture of them on Seagrave's web site under "What's New"
  14. Good luck with the rigs! We have an Inferno at Engine 1 in our town and after a few minor things that had to be done, it has been going stong and the guys at 1's like the truck. Ours is a 2001 model (I think). GL again
  15. I found this today on Firehouse.com New York Firefighter Dies In Firehouse Firehouse.com News The Office of Fire Prevention and Control has reported that a 33 year veteran of the Spring Valley Fire Department died unexpectedly at the firehouse on January 22. Efforts to revive him at the firehouse and at Good Samaritan Hospital were unsucessful. Westervelt was a former Chief and life member of the Spring Valley Fire Department and a life member of Rockland County Chiefs Association and Rockland County Volunteer Fireman's Association. Westervelt is survived by his wife of 35 years, Cathy; six children, Lori and her husband Michael, Michael and his future wife Linda, Bryan, Kristin and her fiancee Moe, Patrick and Kevin; his brother, Thomas; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services were held January 27 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Church, Lake Road, Congers, NY. A firematic service was planned for January 26 at 8:00 p.m. at the T. J. 16. The LEDs on the Scott 50s we purchased have a automatic dimmer for the LEDs when you enter a dark enviroment so they are not as bright. I though this was required per NFPA. Any knowledge of this???

  21. In Ct it is the following from lowest to hihgest MRT - Medical Response Technicians aka First Responders EMT's EMT-I "IV Techs" EMT-P Paramedics I beleive that only the New Haven area (Yale & St Raphels sponor hospital area) are the only ones that no longer recognize EMT-I's in the state. All other sponsor hospitals do.
  22. Had to do that one in a pinch, still work great.
  23. It may sound really like a dumb point since we all are to take care of our equipment, but with these new packs, you have to make sure that you turn off the bottle (obviously) and also bleed out the regulator. I know with out Scott 50's that the LED's stay on when there is presure still up against the regulator. I found out about this after I forgot to do this (stupid me) after a call and my display was dead then next time I used it! (Yes you may all say DOH!!! lol) I learned from this quick, nothing like not having something wqork on your equipment. Depending how much you use the air packs, the batteries should last one month to three months. Just like pass devices, lights, ect. you should check everything at least weekly.
  24. I've been using the gemtor for a few years now and I like it. The only negative about it is the fact my bunkers latch on the right and the gemtor is on the left. Tells you how long I've had it now that they make it open either way now. I haven't seen the new FDNY harness yet. is it almost the same and the Gemtor and could someone post a pic if they could. Thanks
  25. What about swinging an ax in open air too? For got that one LOL
