  1. If you go to any of the newspaper forums or other news site, many of them require it for verififcation. We had a problem down here with the New Haven Register years ago about an incident and it made it into the forums. At that time there was no verification system and anyone under any name could post. Needless to say this turned into a nightmare (also for me because I was acussed of something that I would never think of doing and needless to say my lawyers and the city's got involved). As soon as the verification system went in, the form died. Having all the info should be there for protection but I do not think that your address or phone number should be posted, unless you wanted it to be. It should be only accessable to the system admins to verify who you are and it is really you, not Joe Q Jerk posing as you to start trouble. Joe
  2. Not all of the steel used to build the ship is from WTC but a big part of it is. Being a "brat" of a CPO, it is great to see this as one of the memorials. Some of the steel from WTC if I am no mistaken is also being used at the site as well for the memorial there. I am glad that it is being used and not sitting in the Freshkills. As for using it for fire apparatus, though a good idea, only because we really wouldn't remember it in years to come. With USS New York it would be seen worldwide. Just my thoughts bit the ideas I seen here are really good.
  3. Some stuff from BBFD neighbor Warehouse Point Fire Dapartment http://www.whpfd.org/Multimedia.htm
  4. Just an FYI, the 1957 International / Howe pumper and the BBFD were featured in the Carroll O'Connor (aka Archie Bunker) movie Parish.
  5. What you are refering to is propogation, used when DXing distant stations. To learn more about specifics including weather related receiving check out ARRL's web site or check out publication like Popular Communication, Scanning USA or Monitoring Times. They cover scanning in these mag and will help you recevie what you want better. The only boro I don't get up here( I'm west of New Haven) is Staten Island and it depends on the day including which way the wind blows. For example, Hamden CT and Dix Hills LI both operate on 154.16. My house is closer to Hamden's transmitter which is somewhere's near West Rock Mountian, only 4 mile away. However on a good day, Dix Hills Long Island over powers my reception and I hear them better than Hamden. And that is only using the scanner attenna it comes with. It's pretty amazing how radios act like this and how everything, such as interference from electronics effect it. Hope those links can help you out getting a better understanding.
  6. Cas there is a lot of print shops in CT that can do it. I think Maxi Signs in Seymour, On Derby Ave off Route 8 Exit 19 still specializes in that. Give them a shout. Yhey are located in the same building sa Sabo Auto Body. Look the un in the yellow pages and give them a call. They have done work around the area before for private firms but nothing with the FD's that I know of.
  7. I had posted this under another topic. It is sad that the turn of events went this way. This should not have ever happened. In a way I am glad this cameout out in the media because it is punishing the guilty parties. On th flip side, again we have another black eye to the fire service. OLD CRAP HAS TO DIE!!!!!!! STOP THE BS and TEACH THE RIGHT WAY. WE ARE FIREFIGHTERS!! LOSE THE ATTITUTES!!! Sorry for the rant but we all get bad apples. We have to learn them the right way or have them leave.
  8. Are you talking about the "rescue knot" for lowering or a harness. I think I might know what your asking.
  9. Posted yesterday on FIREHOUSE.COM Maryland Firefighters Face Criminal Charges for Alleged Assaults Volunteers Call Actions One-Sided GUY LEONARD Reprinted with Permission, The Gazette Newspapers Two incidents of alleged misconduct at fire scenes led investigators to file criminal charges against three Prince George's volunteer firefighters. The alleged infractions include physical confrontations and assault on other firefighters and even tampering with breathing apparatus used when entering burning buildings. The most recent incident stems from an altercation between volunteers in February at a fire on Standish Drive in Landover Hills. Lt. Nicholas Martin and Firefighter Adam Brown, both volunteers at Kentland Volunteer Fire Department, have been charged with hindering fire department operations and reckless endangerment of other firefighters in the Feb. 16 incident. According to charging documents, Martin assaulted the volunteer chief from the Bladensburg Volunteer Fire Department. The documents say Martin told him to move a ladder truck, pushed him, yelled profanities and threatened bodily harm. The incident was also caught on a citizen's video camera. A second incident that night occurred when Martin allegedly entered the burning home and yelled at a volunteer captain from Bladensburg, grabbed him by the chest and his self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) face mask and slammed him against a wall, dislodging the critical piece of safety equipment. Brown faces charges stemming from his alleged refusal to follow orders from a superior officer at the same Standish Drive fire. Charging documents state that when Brown was ordered to move from a doorway to allow two other firefighters to put out the fire, he refused. The fire spread from the kitchen to the dining area. The two firefighters, who are full-time employees, reported they were pushed and had their breathing equipment turned off or ripped away by unknown assailants on the fire ground, according to the documents. Brown was not named as the person who committed these infractions. Prince George's Fire⁄EMS Department spokesman Mark Brady declined to call the assaults "fights" because the targets did not return violence in kind. He said that the fire department's investigations served as a warning against further unprofessional conduct. "There were no retaliations [at the first incident]," Brady said. "These investigations have been getting across the message loud and clear about this kind of unprofessional behavior." But the fallout from the Standish Drive incident last month has been serious. Martin has been dismissed and his volunteer chief, Michael Mattison, has been demoted for other alleged rules violations. Kentland volunteers have also alleged that career personnel assaulted them at another fire scene this month in apparent retaliation for actions by volunteers at the Standish Drive fire. County volunteer firefighter representatives have complained that Martin's dismissal occurred without due process, though they have said they too will not accept dangerous and unprofessional behavior. "We're not going to tolerate any violence in the workplace," said Jim Collins, vice president of the Prince George's County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association. "But our fire chief [Lawrence Sedgewick] just made a decision without a review. He says we're one company, but there are two sets of standards. Apparently it's no pay, no say." The controversy has renewed interest in a bill that would create a Firefighters Bill of Rights to standardize procedures for both volunteers and career personnel. Matthew Despos, the third Kentland volunteer charged, is alleged to have turned off another volunteer firefighter's breathing apparatus as a kind of joke at a fire in Capitol Heights in December. The victim confronted Despos, saying he was angry about Despos' alleged behavior. The victim claimed in charging documents that Despos said: "Aw... you know I was just messing with you." Andrew Pantelis, vice president of the Prince George's County Professional Fire Fighters Association, said the incidents have raised tensions in the entire fire service. "It's members from one department who allegedly are engaging in unsafe and hostile conduct," Pantelis said of the Kentland firefighters. "The fact it's turned into a career versus volunteer issue is a mistake. "Firefighters shouldn't have to look over their shoulder to see if other firefighters are going to do them harm, either career or volunteer."
  10. Since the most important thing attached to our head is out helmet, I'm throwing out the idea of showing them off in a gallery. It doesn't matter leather or plastic-kevlar, 1010 or metro, FD, PD or EMS helmet. I think it would be fun to show them off as a spin off ot the earlier hemlet discussion topic I had started awhile ago. EMTBravo admin, a question to you, is there a way to set up a gallery here on the site where members can upload their helmet picture here? Let me know what you all think.
  11. I haven't used this but a couple of people I know tried it on a trial basis and had problems with a mask seal near the temples of the head. Like I said a couple of people so this is not a reflection of the others who may have tried it. I have a insert kit for my Scott mask.
  12. Hey all In February I'm stepping down from my position of Captain and retiring my leather helmet after 15 years and one paint job (from black to "officer" yellow). I'm looking for a shop that is reliable and has a good price where I can buy one. I know there is a bunch online, but I want to be fitted for one. Any sugestions? Thanks in advance Izzy
  13. Hey All, thanks for the replys back. I ended up getting one from the Fire Store and got it with in 4 days after I ordered it (over the weekend basically). I paid $380 with some extras on it. Thanks again all for the input. I'm gonna close this thread. Joe
  14. For me being in Wester New Haven County I teld to listen locally plsu on good days I can pick up some other towns IN CT - Ansonia, Derby, Shelton, Seymour, Woodbridge, Oxford, Stratford, Sikorsky Fire, Metro Bridgeport, Metro New Haven, Metro Waterbury (can't actually listen to Waterbuty since on a multinet LTR system that no scanner can track) LCD, Southern Fairfield county on good days, Hartford simulcast on a good day. In NY I can pick up Suffolk county no problem and some towns there are better in reception than local CT towns. For example Dix Hill FD is on the same freq. 154.1600 as Hamden, CT FD but Dix Hills comes in much better even though hamden transmitter is less than 10 miles away from me and Dix Hills is farther, talk about better line of sight. I can some time s pick up Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess County on the low bands and I get FDNY boros except SI ok.
  15. Just seeing if anyone plays Half-Life Deathmatch online. I'm thinking of starting a game one of these days if anyone wants to. Whoever wants to, just reply here. If we get enough to play I'll schedule a date and time to play. Maybe I'll see about even getting server space to have it up all the time. Let me now what you all think. Izzy

  20. There's another baseball team in NYC? I though the Dodgers and Giants moved out???? Sorry had to pick on the METS fans. The METS need to get out of the cellar and play better, they have the talent.
  21. Just a note, ever since they moved into the new building in Montgomery, they have started building more of there own fenders and such. They should be building there own frames soon. However if you look at the custom bike builders there are still a lot of them that are not single source, too expensive. Many of them use Daytec frames, don't build there own engines, lights, seats, ect. No mater who whether its Jesse, Paul Sr & Jr, Perowitz, Rick Fairless, Indian Larry (RIP) Billy Lane, Simms, whoever, a lot of guys will only build a frame if there is money and time involved and the overhead is not expensive, especially to a customer. Of course if there is a lot of green, they'll build anything. Yes guys like Jesse may build tanks and feners (which are the best out there I think) but that is how he built his business and everyone uses them. Now he has one of if not the best lines though expensive. The whole idea of a "chopper" is to take what you want and build a bike the way you want it to be. It doesn't needd a fat tire or a long front end. Most chopper builders have and will use what ever parts they find around to make it a cool bike. We all have our favorite builder but until you ride one, you'll never know who is better. I have never rode a OCC yet but would like too. Jesse's on the otherhand, WHOA! Perowitz's is also great.
  22. A wetdown is just ther ter, that people have com accustomed to using for celebrate the arrival of a new truck. Many departments don't do the traditional christening and transfer of water from one tank to another anymore or a variety of reasons. Some departments call it a housing now instead of a wetdown. Like many terms we use in the fireservice, the traditional meaning has given away to something else. Plus too, the term is so tied into the celebration of showing off a new truck, why change it.
  23. It can, its all about patient confidentiality FD / EMS / PD / Hospital/ Ect.
  24. I think the problem is that many people are very sensitive to seeing horrific photos of incidents mainly due to the severity of it especially in a mva / mvc. There is also more inportantly the issue the patient's rights and the request of thier family if they are incapacitated which has to be followed and respected. Where do we draw the line? As for public veiwing in the newspapers, tv and on the web, the immages should not show the graphic detail of injuries, giving the upmost respect to our patients. You also have to remember eventhough it is not perfect, HIPPA can be used agains us in posting pictures of patients on our websites. We may not have a name but if someone sees there face there and has a good lawyer then we can be in trouble. I know this may or may not have happen yet, but the possibility is there. When posting images of incidents we have to be very careful of our content. On the training issue, this is a whole different level. If we are to show pictures of a horrific incident as a training tool for rescuers in tacticts, overviews and for new members what to expect, yes we need those picture for "in house" training. Also too, we all do the mock DUI / DWI at prom time of for MADD / SADD events. Showing these pictures, with permission from parents, teachers, administration ect. before hand, to show the effect of drinking and driving and the aftermath of a serious accident, I am all for. Though graphic, it will bring it home to teenagers. Many of us responded to an accident involving young people involved in DUI accidents and we see how ther friends are when they learn of the crash. No need to describe their reaction. If we can get to them someway / somehow, we could hopefully pervent at least one or more future accidents. Getting back to websites, Intubator's disclaimer should be on all websites to warn veiwers of what to expect and also protect the poster. As long as we are responsible for what is being posted there should be no problem.
