  1. Agreed, If a car's clearence from the gound is 3 to four inches and a line is charged with a five inch diameter, well do the math, your gonna damage it. A case of not thinking at all. Unless you have a hose ramp, your gonna damage them at some point.
  2. Best way to put out a truck / engine compartment fire, get a piercing rod or APE tool. If you don't have or can't afford it, Take your halligan, spike the edge of the lid and pull / push it back. Once the notch is far enough to get the adz end in, then pyi it up. Don't stick the nozzle in all the way, set it to a narrow fog (adjustable) or if using a smooth bore, play with the shut off to get a broken stream. Another method I have seen use by one of our neighboring departments is to use a SG-50 with the "pineapple" attachment and use that to get into the truck / engine compartment. As for opening and getting by the latches, I would only use a K-12 if it really needed to be done. If there is a lot of damage then yah, go for it. But I personally don't like to use it if it doesn't need to be used. There are other methods Like Grumpyff stated. Just takes practice to get it open.
  3. We have the new Scoot Fiftys for about a year and a half now and no problems. The battery life depends how many times you use the system. Also to, make sure that you tuen off the air and bleed out the lines, because this keeps the LEDs activated if you do not, wasting the batteries. I had posted some things about this in a previous dissussion as well. As for the mask, Scott did issue a recall last year for a set of medium size masks. The information is available on thier web site. The ring that holds the face peice to the seal could crack under high heat and extened prolonged use. This might be the problem yoiu are facing with th AV3000 masks, the same ones we use. Get the recall info now! They will fix it for you or replace them.
  4. Hmmmmmm.......... Betcha he wasn't a duty officer for long after that.
  5. SI and bronx do share the same frequency but the repeaters / mixers don't work that way where you could hear them. It would cause too much interferrence between the two systems. Plus SI transmitter is in the middle of the island somewhere if I am not mistaken. Being up near New Haven, it is touchy some days I can get Brooklyn and Queens but not Manhattan and the Bronx, or any other combination but no SI. Weather does greatly effect receiving them up here.
  6. Oh ok CAM, I misunderstood you there. I just worry about stuff like that, plus too I don't want to see anything happen to a good person like yourself and get into a bad situation.
  7. Check this out, patent designs for the roto ray. http://members.aol.com/richpl/equip/rotoray.htm One on an old seagrave on a post. http://www.seagraveowners.org/Aurora.htm another http://www.seagraveowners.org/28%20Seag.html
  8. Hey Cam, Read the second paragraph. Those are the idiots I an refering too, OK. Just FYI. Also please don't cut them off, if they hit you because of that, you'll get pinched and I don't need to go through a horror story because you did / wanted too. I have seen a lot of and delt with a lot of bike accidents on an EMS / FD level and dispatching at the troop. That is the worse thing to do only because you know how other drivers can be, they sell you out in a heart beat. (Just watching out for you, not critisizing one bit) But I understand fully how you feel. There are jack###es on bikes. I saw one yesterday driving like a jacka## on 95 comming back from Ledyard, CT in the rain splitting lanes (which is illegal to do even if you area motorcycle trooper). I counted 15 times he was nearly taken out by a car do to his driving. He finnally got caught in New Haven / East Haven and the trooper (in a car) made him wait in the heavy rain yesterday while he wrote him a nice ticket. Good thing they have cameras! Too bad we cant catch all of these jerks. They give us a bad name. Izzy
  9. It's warm weather time! Again we'll be out on our bikes riding around, taking in the nice spring and summer weather. Everyone be alert for each other, bikers and car drivers. Again car driver be vigilant out their watching for us and give us enough space since we are small and sometimes can't be visable. There were too many car vs bike accidents last year nationwide again for non alert car drivers. Same thing goes for those bikers among us. Don't hotdog it or drive like an idiot since you have two wheels and can get in and out of traffic quickly. Again too many accidents occured last year when the cyclist was at fault. Use your head eveyone and be safe. There are many of us here that respond to these calls and see the after effects of them. Lets not make anymore or become a statistic. Have fun and be safe this summer.
  10. wow............................
  11. Roto Rays are one of the oldest warning lights out there. I think they were developed in the 20's or 30's if I'm not mistaken. (Correct me if I'm wrong) They are effetive if used right. A lot of companies in PA and MD have them. DC has started to order all its new trucks with them. Having three lights different colors or atleast two of the same and one different make it more effective. The only think though is the price of them. Just like the Mars lights or Federal's old oscilasers.
  12. The only thing we do in AFD is helmet color as a standard. White is for Chiefs and Chaplains, Yellow for captains and lieutenants, Black fire everyone else except juniors who wear red. As for fronts, here is what most of the firefighters follow, but there is no standard in the department Gold Leaf - Chiefs White for captains, lieutenants, chiefs, chaplains, fire marshal, Black - Engine Co. Red - Truck Yellow - Rescue-Squad
  13. They mean the "euro style" like they have been designing cars. BMW's Mercedes Et al. Not the Scania or Volvo truck front ends. I think it is more of a term than anything.
  14. Spartan offers the Gladiator chassis with the Classic and Evolution fron ends. The Classic is the standard front end grill and light housings. The evolution is the more "rounded" aerodynamic style. I think it is just preference. The Pierce Quantam also falls into the "newer" front ends. I personally like the older style front ends we see now on apparatus. However I think the rounded front cabs like the Lafrance's, Hahn's and TMC front ends are the classic style where most of the new European style come from. Just a matter of preference and having the trucks look differnet from the present boxy style.
  15. Just a different outside view here, you think that FDNY's upper ranks and the city may try to move more single truck co's with single engines in the future? Seems that's been the trend. I think there is good and bad points to it though.
  16. Having seen Sikorsky Aircraft and the military deal with crashes up here, anything military related is usually done by themselves. Of course something happens like a crash or what you saw, people naturally are going to cal for help. The PD, FD & EMS were more than likely told to stand by by the military and would be used if they needed them.
  17. The name that honors the men and women who put out the fires and respond to emergencies is the name of the company or the name of the department / district they are from. For me I belong to the Charters Hose Company No. 4 of Ansonia which is part of the Ansonia Fire Department. Charters Hose and Ansonia is more of a honor to have those names on a truck. Labeling Fire Department or Fire District does not honor those members. Just my thought.
  18. Years of Service won't get her fired????????!!!!!!!! If that was me I would be out of there with my years of service. BULL!
  19. Well there is a distinct difference. Departments are usually a municipal (city, town, village) entity. A district is a controling governing body. Now having said that, can a Fire District employ / oversee a department? YES! Any district body can have a department. Is a district governing body like a city or village, I think so. Any governing body controls a department. I think department is fine, but also and more importantly, you have to remember what your agancy's charter and incorporation read. That is what you should follow.

  21. Yah Darwin Awards go to those that off themselves doing stuipd stuff to get themselves killed. This is definatley a honorable metion which people don't have to off themselves.
  22. I have never been to any of the firehouses in Westchester... yet. Hopefully Ardsley FD members could post some pictures of the old firehouse, inside and out and when they move into the new home, do a comparison shot? Good luck with the new building!
  23. It's also one of the oldest Jacks / flags of the USA. DON'T TREAD ON ME!!!!!
