  1. Beleive it or not this is typical of most websites not having any or only some info when they are launching a new website. It stinks but it happens more often than not now. You would think that they would have atleast a blurb about thier products but they do have pictures from older deliveries and the calanders in the galleries. The old web site really didn;t have a true "recent deliveries" section describing the units like Pierce, Smeal, E-ONe ect. had. The new design looks like its going to be easier to navigate since the old one lasted like 10 years. Keep our fingers crossed.

  6. LifeStar in CT is based out of Hartford Hospital. They run two helocopters, Lifestar 1 (Blue with white graffics) and Lifestar 2 (White with Blue graffics). One is stationed at Hartford Hospital and the other at Baccus Hospital in Norwich. This gives all of CT, RI and Southern Mass plenty of coverage. On a separate note, the was talk of having a third air-med unit out of Bridgeport or New Haven in the past years but nothing came about it yet. Also it is unknown who would sponsor this unit since Hartford Hospital doesn not have a partnership hospital in the area. Rumors had that it was going to be a Yale-New Haven / Bridgport hospital sponsorship but you know how rumors and politicians are.

  9. The only tine riding on a back step is allowed is when packing hose after a call / drill (technicly this isn't riding the rear step per OSHA). You cannot ride a back step to a call, drill or out just for a "joy ride" This is an MFPA and OSHA mandadted law. On May 11th, 1991, two Waterbury, CT firefighters died while going to a call in spare Engine 11, a 1980's Hahn. It lost its brakes and crashed into a tree killing two members and severly injuring the three otheres. One member was riding standing up in a jump seat and was thrown from the vehicle. After this incident, all members riding seated became the norm and law and closed cabs became standard on all new apparatus. This incident along with severe others that included members falling of the running boards and rear steps of apparatus began the process of eliminating this practice. The Waterbury incident was the last straw so to speak as well as other similar incidents that occured at the same time period.
  10. Both Southport and Stratfield volunteers have to have the same certs as FFD (FF I, EMT et al.) They usually run 6p to 6a with a crew at thier respective stations. Stratfield runs Heavy Rescue 15 and Southport runs Squad (mini pumper / rescue) 14 and Marine 14 if I remember correctly. Very rarly do they run during the day time monday through friday.
  11. Get a t-connector from radio shack or a communications store with the correct tyle of connector to your scanner (usually a BNC). If your doing two anntenna, get one for low band / VHF and a shorter one for UHF and 800. Reception will be ok do to normal signal loss through the cables and connectors but only noticable on the VHF when distant from the towers,

  15. I do not like to wear my bunkers while driving a rig, let alone my own car. I rather throw the gear into a compartment and after I get everything set up, then throw my pants on. Some departments in my area, very few, make the driver wear everything!! I don't think that a coat and a helmet should be worn while driving because it hinders the driver's movent when steering and wearing a helmet can cause problems when trying to look around through the windows of a truck. Our department allows drivers to operated in "street clothes."

  17. Hey I saw the same unit out on 95 in East Haven CT delivering concrete!!! All seriousness though, I know a lot of industrial services ave the Schwing boom as an elevated master stream but I have never seen a bucket on it. Looks kinda cumbersome especially for a normal structure fire.

  20. Just to say what Jason said, you might still be able to find a 780 around for $200 or less. I have two since the only digital system we have in the state is CTSP And I don't want to listen to who I work for lol. They are a good scanner. and the radio shacks I have owne, at least the older ones were good too.
  21. As for my company, we always tell our history to new members in a non formal setting. Having the old timers explain what we went though through their years and seeing what it was like when they worked side by side with the previous generation. We also tell them how the department came as a whole since it was made up of two separate fire districts back in the 1890's. They need to know the history to understand how to go into the future and how change has effected the department. Knowing a company / department's history will help them along the way in both firefighting skills, how it was done, to social aspects and ect. Plus too, having a recuit / new member understanding "where we came from" will help them gain the pride in the company / department as well as other departments that they will work with in the future.
  22. Buy a scanner is not as easy as it was say 10 to 20 years ago since there are so many features. There are several brands that ar really good but I would stick with Uniden line over Radio Shack though both are good. Now you have to decide if you want a base, a mobile / bas or a hand held unit. Base are bulky, base / mobiles are good and can be temporarily or permenantly mounted in a car and brought inside, handhelds you can use any where. Now what do you listen to????? Just low band, high band UHF? do you listen to 800, milcom, air frequencies, marine frequencies, railroad? What about trucking systems and APCO 25 digital systems??? Choices, choices choices!!!! First decide what your area has for current frequencies and also plan for the future as well. Conventional scanners have 10 to 12 bands. When you start getting into the trunking scanners the price goes way up. As well as the new 700 MHZ band. There are plenty of scanner and radio websites out there to read up on some stuff that do not get technical. Even go to SCANNINGUSA.COM whihc is a monthly publication for some ideas.

  25. Looks like the rig we wanted from Seagrave. Good Luck with the new Engine 119! Just a question, the piping going up from the pump house on the panel side to the front of the hose bed, is that a preconnect?
