A friend of mine posed a question to me the other day. He is looking for a picture of an old white Ward LaFrance Ultra-vision pumper that was in was in service in the county. He says he remembers it being at a single bay station in a residential section. He also stated he though that the company later had a Mack (assuming its a CF). I initially though it might have been Briarcliff Manor FD at first since them and Archville are the only departments that I know operated white painted rigs. Can anyone help me out here and shed some light? My friend is an avid apparatus photographer and a buff. Thanks.

Thanks Steve, I think it was Harmon's old station and Ward he was thinking of. I'll let you know. Thanks again!
-
Steve, you wouldnt have a pic of the old Harmon firehouse would you? I'm gonna run all the info by him and see if it stirs his memory. Thanks for your help! Izzy

I'm wondering if he was confusing DF's ALF with a WLF. What year did the Ogden's ALF get replace by the Mack CF? Also all the Ward Ultras in the county were either in red or yellow correct?
-
DFFD's website states that was an American LaFrance, not a Ward LaFrance. No, I'm looking for one for my friend.

Thanks for the info Frank, and also thank you for showing me around the old Brooklyn CO when I came down a few years ago. It was an honor and a privilege. - Joe N.

Out west, there are a lot of FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICTS that cover a large area for subscription. Its the same thing as a fire district or municipal fire department we are accustomed to here in the North East. Just like Wraftery stated, you had to pay the insurance companies 200 years ago for fire protection. The old NYC Fire Patrol Salvage Corps was one of the last remnants of that sort of system. Back then you didn't fight fires mainly because they were too far gone to control for bucket brigades and old goose-neck, bucket-filled hand pumpers. You went in and salvaged everything you could, thus the salvage corps. The occupants knew they had to pay for rural fire protection for it to be provided. That is how they are funded for rural protection is by subscription, you don't pay into it, you don't get it. Also not for nothing, that was a trailer home, by the time that department probably got to it to put it out, it more than likely was well involved. Sorry but I wouldn't even think of crawling into one of those death traps to put a fire out if there was no life safety.

Hear a rumor that Hartsdale tower is out of service and New Fairfield's old Seagrave after some repairs is going to serve as its backup until the tower ladder is back in service. Any truth to the rumor?
-
More than likely the original was an aerial ladder truck and when they purchased the TL, they didn't feel like changing the designation maybe?

Population 122,867 in 2010 census. Information according to the CT Dept. Pub Health.: http://www.ct.gov/dph/lib/dph/hisr/hcqsar/population/pdf/pop_towns2010.pdf Stamford is the fourth in size in terms of population: 1-Bridgeport, 2-Hartford, 3- New Haven.

Unless there is a reciprocity agreement and you can get the CT certs through that or see if they will accept the national certificates, if not I don't believe so. You'll have to check with New Canaan.
-
If you do not have any of the prerequisites your application will not be accepted. I asked someone who works there about the hiring and they are strict with what is needed at the time of application. I do not believe they send anyone to the CFA due to the certifications they require for hiring. Just passing the information along.

I don't know what would be the best for Stamford, I'm not a resident there nor do I know anything about their operations what is or what is not needed, that is up to them. I'm not a consultant and I don't think my opinion on what is best for them matters. The question is really up to all of those who work or volunteer at the FDs and the residents of the city. Fact is this is how many stations there are: Long Ridge VFD - 2 stations Turn of River VFD - 2 stations Belltown VFD - 1 station Glenbrook VFD - 1 station with SFRD Engine 6 Springdale VFD - 1 Station with SFRD Engine 7 SFRD - 7 stations (Stations 8 & 9 are temporary stations) Total number of stations in Stamford: 14 Here is a map for all the stations in Stamford from Local 786 website: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=112186084110624058650.0004537d99859a74c9ec9&ll=41.068481,-73.508835&spn=0.236578,0.432587&z=11 You have to look at everything; density, travel times, street layout, ect. Plus also have to take into consideration call volumes. I'm sure Fairfield's call volume would be half of what Stamford's, including medicals. Like I said, this is not my battle, I don't know what is best nor will I comment what is best.

Willy, Just to focus on the size of the towns / cities, Bridgeport is CT's largest city by population with New Haven and Hartford's populations being #2 and #3, Stamford is #4 in population in the state. Stamford is 52.1 sq miles (37.7 sq miles of land, 14.3 sq miles of water area) versus Bridgeport which is 19.4 sq miles in area (land being 16.0 sq miles and water area of 3.4 sq miles). Same with Hartford and New Haven, the total area of Stamford is quite larger. The largest town by size in the state is New Milford at 63.7 sq miles of area (61.6 sq miles of land and 2.1 sq miles of water), however the town has far less population. Also look at their neighbor to the west, Greenwich, pretty similar in land / water size but again quite less in population. Stamford has a very wide coverage area compared to the three "bigger" cities of the the state. To put it in perspective, it would be like you coming from the Greenville station in Norwich having to run to Mashantucket if you were to travel north border to south border.

I run a 1010 at work, but also I still have a N5A. I've worn both through the years.

I recently came across another "fine" video on another site of a training session gone bad (for lack of better terms I really want to use). Unfortunately it is of a department that is in the coverage area of this site. Just like the title says, what were you thinking?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! As a certified instructor you all should be givin' a swift kick on the backside, this was not funny, this could have been even potentially worse outcome. And why even post it????? I don't care if I get reprimanded or suspended from the site for posting this. Everyone involved should be suspended by their officer / chief. Morons!!!!! Obviously no one believes in safety anymore. (Seth and mods, if you take this down, please me know by a PM. Thank you.)

Brother ALS, both you and I have respectfully agreed and disagreed with different viewpoints at various times. This one I think though we've look at different sides, we are pretty much again both on the same set of tracks. With my comment of "shooting ourselves in the foot" its the age old stupidity of posting something like this video when it shouldn't have been, regardless who is involved in it. But at the same time, it does prove why certain people should not be firefighters (or involved in any sort of emergency services) at all. Granted I am not free from error and have done a couple dumb things in the past (who hasn't), I would never have jeopardized my life or anyone else's with some stunt like this, an neither would a great majority of us here. Though it may not have shot you in the foot, my point with the comment was geared to those who are always wondering and commenting "why do the public and media hate us" all the time. This is exactly why, now its on FFCC and Statter with "good" (sarcasm) publicity. But also it is a good view of what not to do as well, that I agree with 100% and will not defer from that. A part of me wishes that if the guy doing the bailout did get seriously hurt (please do not take it that I am actually wishing harm on someone, just going to make a point), then maybe, just maybe the light bulb would have gone on with the bystanders. And that is what upset me even more, they stood there and watched, no one stepped in and tried to stop the unsafe act. I take great pride as should everyone with my current job and my previous volunteerism as a firefighter, and also the training that I've received and taught. I just hope people start "getting it" sooner than later, but I know that is not the case most of the time these days. If you ever need a good back-up guy on the knob, you'll know I'll be there!

It's a clip from earlier this year but it it the truth! Here's the non-mobile link:

Who cares if its new or if its been out there for months?!?!?!? Once again, a "firefighter" shot all of us in the foot doing something idiotic and stupid. That is the point. And we all wonder why the media and public begin to hate us half the time.

NO hidden stones SRS, I call them like I see them. Also I totally agree with what you posted as well.

More than likely Engine 87 since their current rig is a 1991 model. (Plus I think it still says North Tarrytown on it.)
-
-
Your exactly right Chief! Nothing like seeing a brand new shiny ladder truck and the back end scrape along the ramp or up coming onto / off a steep hill! Better yet, how about those rigs that have the extra low bolt on step that usually gets whacked off of scrapes along a steep roadway? I've seen a few of those happen!!

I believe that the Ladder Company also operates the Rescue, hence the Ladder Rescue on the windshield of the rescue truck also.
