Keep Mechanics Employed? Buy E-nother One? See the Grave? American LaJunk? Suk-phen? Smeal Deal? Pierce of crap? We heard them all, but there is no such thing as a bad truck. And everyone has thier opioion on whos the best, just like the Ford, GM and Dogde debate. What matters is the service and dealer network level after you receive your truck. If there is bad service, then its a bad truck. If you don't do your homework before signing on the line to start building a truck, shame on you then. If quality control is a problem, then that is what you have to worry about then. Just because you pay $300,000 to $400,000 for a pumper doesn't neccesarily mean your buying the best and anything less is crap too. KME is a good truck, so is E-One, ALF, Ferrara, Sutphen, Smeal, Central States, Ect. The only one I would say is bad now is the defunct New Lexington out of PA because of thier building and quality control prolems and other things since they area being investigatred and also currently being sued by a MA department.

I was just up in Rochester last weekend for my cousin's wedding. One of my cousins is an ex battalion chief in Chili and we were just talking about a fire in Spencerport they had not to long ago. Too bad, you can't replace the memorabilia. Very sad.

I say go with the BCT15 or if you need APCO25 digital cappabilities, go with the 996. I say this because with the new 800 MHz framing, you'll be able to flash this one first when the softeware comes out when everyone moves. The second choice would be the BCT8. The 898 is tool bulky but not a bad home scanner but it will not be able to be flashed for the new framing of 800 mhz. Jst my opinion

OK wasn't following you.

CBS did a siren test years ago with a car, windows up, radio up and had used the Q, electronic wail / yelp combo, air horns and also the Europeam hi / low air horns. The test was done when all the audible warning devices were moved off the top of the rigs to the fron t bumper (same hight as vehicle drivers and passengers). The wail / yelp was the worst since you could not hear it until the rig was at you back bumper, mainly since the frequencies used are reall a 4 tone combination of sorts. The Q could be heard, when used from almost 10 car lengths away, the European hi / low hors were roughly the same and the air horns you could hear about 3 or 4 car lengths back. What does this mean? Drivers should pay more attention while operating a vehicle and be mor conscience when driving. There is no perfect siren unfortunately in my opinion though I think a combination of Q electronic and air horns are the best. Make as much noise as possible.

ff026, You are correct about a P25 system, but also the standard can also be used for a standard simplex. semi-duplex of full-duplex conventional, no trucnking for communications as well. I forget where the line is though. I'm still looking it up.

I think it was the same research article that NPFA used for the 1901 standards. I think this was don in the late 80's early 90's. I know of the one you are talking about since its the one I was thinking about. I can't remember if it was in a trade magazine or something else.

Hey I remember TRFD received a fed grant for apparatus back a year or two ago. I had though it was for a rescue apparatus or did they use the finds to get this truck. At least I thought it was TRFD.

LOL Talk about public revenge

Yah It was made around WWII for FDR to travel with due to the Axis threat. I learned about it back in college while getting my degree. Never saw it though. Sould be interesting.
-
True but it was a communications standard, not a trunking system standard as far as I remember. I'll have to do some research.

I think he's confusing Spring Valley with Tarrytown's tower in the discussion.

Remember digital and encryption are two totally different things. Digital just like conventional transmissions are a front end process of taking sound frequencies and transfering them into electerical impulses then translated back. Digital is also a "translation" of sorts to a code like that used on cd's of a combination of "1" and "0" then retranslated back on the receiving end. Digital is used to enhance communications, of sorts, and also to free up bleed over and other radio phenomenom. Encryption is an add on to block the receiving of tactical communications to protect feild units, specifically military and later on police services, FBI, CIA et al. to protect and also to "hide" communications of those agencies. Encryption is by no means an enhancment of radio systems. APCO's "25" standard is an attempt to overcome some of the interference on trucnked and conventional radio interference, bleed over and free up some bandwidth. There is more to this and I'm only explaining what I understand. But to have a fully encrypted system is really not fesable.

No more??? Come anyway, we'll save some burgers and dogs for ya at the Valley side.

You know I saw it on the Merrit Parkway last week in Meriden heading north, It might have been going to Nichols for service or going back to Mt. V to I-91 (the interchange is in Meriden). It was stripped and lettered for Mount Vernon. Sweet looking rig.

It just came back up for me. They must have been doing an update

Anyone getting a polling screen when going to firehouse.com? I got it on my aol and my web browsers. Just curious. Time of problem: 14:33

Light on, sitting on the ramp???? Well that would confuse me as a motorist and a as a guy going to a call. That's a no no in my book. Sitting on the ramp, no emergency lights should be on at all. When everyone is on turn on the lights, shut the door and slowly pull off the ramp. Heck if I'm going to the station and I see a truck pulling out, that to mee means that they are responding and time for mee to follow them to the scene in my POV. I agree 100% with yah ALS.

If they go for the encryption on the new radios, expect some big $$$$$$ to be spent. Encryption ain't cheep no matter what system you use.
-
You know I totally forgot about that topic I started. Sorry.

What system are they buying????
