  1. Bronx Fire Radio put on the Bronx channel transmission fo the initial mady call from the incident commander and the transmission of the third alarm. There is no fire ground radio traffic, this is the Bronx primary channel transmissions. http://www.firegroundphotos.net/bronxco/index.html
  2. So what do you wear and how do you look??????
  3. Controversy for a flag that has been unde controversy since 9-11. The flag that was raised by our three brothers that day was supposed to be taken for a boat somewhere berthe off Battery Park, according to the owner of the boat if memory serves me correct. Reguardless of this, I hope there was no "back door" loosing of this icon of our nation nor anyone trying to replace it or taking it for their own needs. This flag is our nation's icon, Our Flag, and it better be found soon.
  4. Leather Boots for me are better because you can "feel" better. What I mean by "feel" si that your feet are more sensitive to touch with a softer boot but still have the added protection of a steel toe and sole. For me I can tell which why my foot is seated better while walking compared to a rubber boot. Helemts, I it I coule wear my old faithful N5A New Yorkte, pre shell helmet I would for interior but my current N5A with Bourkes is the helmet for me. On my second one, retired the first after 10 years of hard work, I'll always wear that. However I do own a Carnes 1010 that I love though I only use it for extrications and hazmats.
  5. The problem with EMS is people still think we pick you up, throw you in a back of an ambulance and race you to a hospital. Obviously we haven't been doing that since the 70's. People need to be educated that we area like field medics / corpsmen of the military. The we can get specific with what we provide in the field.
  6. The problem comes down to managment of the FD. Fire department EMS services in my opinion should have thier own operations and administrative chiefs that answer to the Chief of the Department and Commissioners. I think having a separated division, like say a special operations division, marine division, ect, whould benefit the EMS services provided by fire departments. This way havinf separate administrators for EMS can effectively concentrate on first responder, basic and advanced life support training and operations for a department. I also beleive that a separate training division for EMS in a fire department would be more effective. This is one aspect. We already know that EMS as a separate unit / organization from a fire department works by looking at all separate EMS agencies that are around. I hate to see DCFD lose EMS but the problem is will it soulve their problems??? I really don't think so because if they split the problems will follow and it may not resolve the issue since many of which who run it would still be there. Could the management be a problem, maybe but who knows. Reguardless if with or separate, EMS should be funded separately for thier operations. I think this would help alot also so they can spend the proper amount of funds for taining all emergency services workers. Maybe they should create a city Emergency Services Council with separate Fire, PD EMS, Ect. division that each chief has to answer to, more so as an ovesite committee that knows the differences of each department and their specific needs. Who knows what will work.
  7. I'm a V-8 an, so how's the 6 cylinder run?
  8. Too bad, they said that the Stingray swam underneith him and the barb went through his heart / chest. If it hit someplace else he would have surrvived. The Ray must have though he was in danger and reacted. They say Steve too was very quite, not like his "zany" and lovable act while he's doing a show. We lost a guy who made learning about wildlife and preserving it fun again.
  9. When I sent my reply, the topic is what it reads now.
  10. Scott issued a recall last year I think for the AV3000 masks for defective sheild attachment rings. You should be able to check on it on there website.
  11. OK I hit the "devil's number" so I'm just getting the jinks out off the way! ]:->
  12. Lightning rod, DAMN! How would I explain that I lost a $300 with $10,000 worth of equipment in it to the insurance company god forbid if something happened. I think its cool but a little too much.
  13. My cousin is an Lieutenant in Stratford and new Mike. He said he was a really nice guy. They all are feeling the lost deeply.
  14. It was also the first time since the 80's or 70's that NYC did a brough call also if I remember correctly. Frank Raffa's web site has a lot of info on it about the old brough calls.
  15. I made a mistake 7-5 then the box number is a full first alarm assignment. 5-7 is one engine and one ladder only. My bad.
  16. 66 a preliminary / simultaniuios / notification signal for the Bronx and Manhattan 33 is the third alarm signal 2787 is the box number (Manhattan and Bronx box numbers run together) These signals were tapped out on the old bell system in FDNY to alert the stations of alarms or messages. If the bell signal 6-5-2 was struck over the system and no box number after, it was the signal for the deskman or station to listen to the radio. If a ladder company and an engine company were needed only to respond to box 715 then 7-5-715 would be struck (hence the 7-5 signal used on the radio today) Now using box 2787 in the Bronx, 66-33-2787 was the signal for Bronx / Manhattan third alarm call. If units from Queens were requested to respond on a fourht alarm the bell system in Queens would hear 99-44-66-2787 (Queens to rspond fourth alarm into Manhattan / Bronx Box 2787) For the LODD I beleive it would be struck 66-33-2787-5-5-5-5 (dashes are longer pauses between numbers, no spaces are shorter pauses) Here is the Fire Bell club's bell signal page for more info. http://www.firebellclub.org/signals.html
  17. Dispatchers are trained to "echo" a calling unit's response. This was set up by APCO years ago and is part of thier training course to make sure that if other units did not hear a transmission due to whatever reason, the dispatcher is a "relay" of the message again. This was mainly started back in the old non-repeater days of low band radios and mixer off systems. Yes berevity should be used but the feild units must remember that otherwise I will repeat word for word the instructions they give. That is how I was trained as a dispatcher. I do beleive that a dispatcher should be able to shorten up a message if there is a lot of un-pertinent information being transmitted out to them. As long as the original message is not diverted from.
  18. MUCH BETTER!!!! Got to love html code Great job with the videos, real fun to watch, post more soon.
  19. Well Pluto just got kicked back by Zeus to the underworld again, No respect. Pluto must feel like Rodney Dangerfield. LOL
  20. If you remember the earlier post from another thread and if you research the beginigns of this argument it was two fold. First is the high tax paid for the district and the second was a group of citizens who live on one side of a golf course that were closer to another district felt they would be better suited with that department. Most of these residents of this area were white. I don't remember who fired the racial charge first but I think it was one of the district commissioners not the fire department members or residents of the town.
  21. Reprinted from Firehouse.com and Newsday BRANDON BAIN Newsday Residents of the Gordon Heights Fire District, angered over having to pay the highest fire district taxes on Long Island, last night presented the Brookhaven Town Board with a petition to dissolve the fire district. The residents - some wearing green shirts to symbolize money - submitted a petition with signatures from more than 400 homes, well over the 51 percent of district households required to force the town board to hold hearings on the issue. Eventually, the town board might have to vote on the matter. The signatures are being reviewed by the town. Experts say no fire district in New York State ever has been dissolved. Some members of the mostly black fire district have brought up concerns that race could be a factor in the drive to shut it down. But residents denied that. "It's all about money," said Rosalie Hansen, a Gordon Heights resident who collected signatures. "They're trying to make it a racial thing but it's only about the color green, and that's money." Gordon Heights Fire District Commissioner Chesley Ruffin said dissolving the district could be damaging to fire safety in the area and wouldn't guarantee a reduction of taxes. "Do I feel taxes in New York are high? Yes," he said. "But they are giving people false hopes." Fire officials in Gordon Heights, a predominantly black community, have said the department's history as a black organization must be preserved. Residents, who started petitioning to close the firehouse on Hawkins Avenue in April, pay on average $1,344 in fire taxes, more than three times what is paid by residents in neighboring Medford ($358) and Yaphank ($398). Fire department officials blamed high taxes on the lack of a commercial tax base in the district. The small, volunteer district has a $1.48-million budget and protects roughly 800 homes. If the fire district is dissolved, several scenarios are possible. A nearby district's fire commissioners could vote to absorb Gordon Heights, or the town board could take on Gordon Heights as a fire protection district like Moriches, collecting taxes and contracting with a nearby fire department to protect its homes. "Many people are losing their homes, not to fires but to high taxes," said Melvin Robinson, a Gordon Heights resident since 1942 who pays $1,400 in fire taxes. Also at last night's meeting, the Brookhaven Town Board passed its Energy Star resolution requiring that all new homes in the town be built under Energy Star standards for energy efficiency. Brookhaven Town officials are expected to meet today with Babylon Town Supervisor Steve Bellone to discuss more energy-reducing initiatives in their respective towns.
  22. Check your child labor laws in NY State, it should outline this question on firefighting and training. In CT it is 18 and no one under the age of 18 can be certified since they cannot take part of any live fire drills.
  23. Wanna learn how to control your breathing on any SCBA, do the old 5 minute drill. Drain the air tank down to 500 psi, mask up and sit down in full gear and try to make your bottle last as long as you can. As the old story goes when your at 500 you have approximately five minute of less of stored air, depending how much air an individual needs. Learning how to control inhalation and exhalation can make you save air incase you become trapped or lost. Remember if you are moving you can go through this much air in seconds. When I first took my Firefighter I course up here in the early 90's we were taught this more as a confidence builder on the use of an airpack. Some people only lasted 5 minutes or so, but many lasted longer I lasted 28 minuites sitting thier, concentrating onb my breathing and relaxing. One person was able to last about 37 minutes. It was a good way to learn how to control your breathing. We also later did this persforming light and strenuous work and we made a thirty miniute rate bottle last almost that long. It was a good drill just to get use to controling your bottle.
  24. I had the worst coat, velcro inside and hooks outside. Well, I was issued this coat, I went from my old Globe snap and hook coat to this one, needless to say my department at the time "didn't realize" that you need to spec out turnouts and just bought what ever was available. Needless to say we had a major fire and I got some exposure due to the inside velcro opening up!!! GO FIGURE!!!! Well thankfully I still had my old trusty Globe coat, though much old but I trusted it more with the snap in, hook out closure and put it back in service. I still have that coat that opened up on me and only use it for shoveling snow, since that is what is is only good for. The department smartened up with new chiefs and new complete sets of turnouts came in. My coat now has a zipper inside and velcro outside overlap (the way it shoud be configured with velcro being used) and i like it. I haven't had any problems though I do like the old d-hooks since you know they were secured but there is advantages to the zipper / velcro sytle.
