For an active rescue, or for standby duty? I find it VERY hard to beleive they are the closet available team...considering how most LI departments are robustly equipped. I also wonder if the residents of the county they are from might not be better served if need be? In any event, safe travels, and may your skills and services be not needed.

Barry - do you feel that 10 years is too short of a life span for a helmet? I agree with the bunker gear, but the leather helmet I wear is a 1987 vintage, I have worn it for 20. It is well worn and "salty", but with the impact cap and NO wire showing or cracks, it is still in good shape. 25 years MAY be pushing the envelope a bit, but is it unreasonable to expect say...15 years of service from a lid? Maybe 20 for a composite like the Ben 2?

I can ebay flooded with "authentic, seasoned, FDNY fire helmet" via NYC.gov................................ *see ebay flooded.

Oh. And I also find, that those MOST critical of dispatching, and dispatchers, are those who have never spent a millisecond in "the chair". EVERYONE has ideals, Dispatchers have protocols.

Having been an EMD since 1996, I can say, with experience, that EMD is NOT all it is cracked up to be. In cases of arrest/choking/hemmorage control/childbirth - YES, pre arrival instructions are vital....but IMEO, the rest is just fluff. Paramedic is, and should be the standard of care..I think in the next few years, BLS transporting units will be obsolete. I am not a fan of the Priority response plan. I find the majority of callers actually beleive that the dispatcher they are talking to is the one who will be responding. I can not even begin to count the times I have initiated EMD, only to hear, "Just send the Mofo'ing Amalance!" Click................... NOT bashing my, or any other agency, just real world experience.

I stand corrected. While technically, no dispatchers are being laid off, they have cut the one open position. No one is safe.
-
And to confrim - the PD DID lose positions, but those that are currently vacant, so no officers were physicall laid off. I am not sure about the FD. The PD is losing 5 civillian employees.
-
OR dispatchers.
