Looking at attitude in terms presented by HFD above - yeas, absolutely 100 percent...I didnt think of it that way when you replied initially... And how do we get that "gut feeling" without the experience? I don't think you can.
-
I dont care about attitudes....I was just posing a question. Funny how the majority is going with today's firemen...and I agree. But how much merit is there in running 2-3 workers a shift, or a dozen a month....experience is a HUGE advantage in the fire service... Today - you can make Chief of Deparmtnet in ALOT of towns with little to no REAL fire experience...

Damn thats sharp Rob! Strong work by Beekman! I can NOT wait to see it.... What will become of my old Rescue?

There is a 15 minute video on VentEnterSearch.com about this very subject - VERY informative. Thanks for bringing this topic up - I learned quite a bit. http://www.vententersearch.com/

Not only that Joe - but how many firefighters from days gone by died of the long term effects of not having SCBA years after they answered their last real alarm? I wonder if they kept track of those records? I seriously doubt it.
-
That is EXACTLY how I feel....and what ALOT of firefighters, and fire Officers I know are just not getting......Thnak you!

How many department have, and utilize a SAFETY Officer on scene, on a regular basis? What are their qualifications? What are their roles on scenes? Are they a help, or a hinderance? Are they considered a line Officer? My department has several, past Chief's who have good knowledge, although not all are active enought to respond regularly. The one that does is top notch, and old school Chief. Just looking to see how other deparmtnets run....

Sure ya would! City 911 gets 'em BOTH! Sometimes on the same tour....lucky us!

Not that we should be questioning the PROFESSIONALS of the LFD, but to reply....look at the pictures...do you see much smoke or any fire? Do you think YOU would be on air in that situation? What is a common denominator on roofs this time of year? Snow and ice....which is dangerous enough...but why risk being off centered and possibly throwing off your balance to wear a pack, when 99.9 percent of us wouldnt be masked up on air anyways? I can say with ZERO heistation, that if it were me...no air = no pack.

It's been a BUSY start to 2009 for the PFD! 5 "jobs", 4 of which have gone to 2nd's or better.... Poughkeepsie is tied for shootings vs. structure fires!
