  1. Great replies so far - thanks! And no, there is no way i was, or would ever, compare any department to the FDNY, especially up here is the suburbs/rural area we cover. I was just looking to start good conversation on another tool in the cache. So far, so good!
  2. That is the great mystery.....has been as long as I have been alive!
  3. And so it begins....my wife alerted me that a portion of the old Bennett Gir's College had collapsed recently. I actually expected this over the winter with the amount of snow load on the roof..but I correctly guessed what dormer would collapse first! LOL It will be interesting to see what action is taken now that is "officially" an eye sore. Sorry for the pics, but that is all the zoom my little point and shoot has...I know..BIll Johnson I am not..
  4. Not looking for a pissing match as to what particular manufacturer's sytems, just looking to discuss the pro's and con's of different systems in how they are carried and deployed. My department is looking to upgrade to the Scott with the EZ-Scape (I think that is what they are looking at). We currently are not issued any sort of system or rope, so it is a great step that we have a Chief that cares enough to do this. So I want to know the good, the bad, the ugly of different systems; Integrated SCBA Seperate System carried in a pouch (Petzl, etc) Rope wrapped around the Gemtor hook Or my preferred method, the good ole body belay. I STILL maintain that under extreme duress, the fastet method of personal escape is the body belay. I honestly think, that even if equipped with the best bailout system designed, I would revert to the body belay in a time of crisis. So let's hear it - what are your thought and experiences. There are guys out there that know FAR more that I on this. Thanks.
  5. Thanks J....hope you never need it.
  6. Thats the problem....it's SUPPOSED to be ball busting...ball breakin'....but never, EVER ball touching! I TRULY hopes that this is seen as an eye opener for other people who engage in such shenannigans, but hopefully at a smaller level...just because you are behind closed doors at a safe place like your own station, there is no Vegas rule here...what happens there, doesn't always stay there. Even worse, it usually ends up on the internet, be it the news, youtube, facespace, or here. And we wonder why most departments are putting video cameras in.... Shape up boys!
  7. aWESOME.
  8. I just screwed the chargers where I wanted them. Used wood screws which worked well on the plastic.
  9. What kind of POV do you have? At the risk of opening myself up and showing my TRUE buff status, here is a glimpse of what I do. I have a Suburban. I have never been able to make a rig and I live close to the firehouse, so I carry my turnout gear, coat, pants, helmet, radio, mask, and handlight in the far rear hatch area, behind the 3rd row seat. I have a safety barrier designed for dogs to keep anything in that area from flying forward and injuring my kids in case of an accident. I have also installed a charger for my portable radio and my handlight on the side of the rear storage area. All of this gear is covered with the retractable tonneau cover. For lights, which in MY area, still are a valuable assett and do help, although I rarely use them. I have; A 4 LED "stick" on the dash, 2 small LED grille lights, and strobes in the amber portion of the rear tailights. Simple, yet exceptionally effective. All are hardwired to switches that are installed where the old analog OnStar used to be. I also installed a Bearcat 16 channell scanner in the center console where I removed the factory cassette player. There is NOTHING obstrusive about the entire set up, and other than the dashlight, you would never guess the truck was so "buffed out"..LOL
  10. I need to upgrade my hood, been wearing one of the vented top Morning Pride's for a long time...and by wearuing I mean mostly kept around my neck... I have been very good the past year or so about deploying it as it should be and find the seam digs into my forehead when I put my New Yorker on..after extended periods of time, it gives me a headache. Is anyone aware of a THIN layered hood out there? Brands and model names, or links would be great.

  12. Good info here - thanks for the input. Certainly swaying MY perception of the systems. I am still not at all sold on the SCBA integrated systems.....but dont have enough data on them to form a complete opinion. I hope J posts up some pics. He does pretty good with that point and shoot..he just needs to break it out now and then on J O B S.
  13. And for God's sakes Seth - clean our car! LOL I am going through a fairly frustrating time with a mobile scanner I recently put in my Suburban...very spotty reception and it drives me nuts. Of course it is a basic, yet reliable Bearcat..
  14. Oh please. Fire department based career EMS, and ALS in particular, is the very best pre hospital care option out there today. However, to properly run such a program takes manpower and money...something not alot of municipalities want to cough up right now, or even have for that matter. You can see outstanding examples of such systems with the Arlington Fire District and LaGrange Fire District.
  15. Good God that thing is in need of some TLC and a makeover!
  16. Bottom line in the members of the FFD ARE staffed at the bare bone minimum..and that is even before you factor in EMS. The comments posted by readers are just plain scary,,,some really far out there people.
  17. Nice! Keep them coming! On a side note - we vacationed for a couple weeks in Daytona and Orlando recently, and I had hoped to go to the E - One factory for a tour, but sadly, they have suspended plant tours.
  18. Correct me if I am wrong, I usually am when there are engines involved... This device, a wheel with a "pie cut" appears to be placed at the door frame, allowing the hose to slide more freely as it is advanced, without getting hung up. Essentially, a mechanical "5th man" who was the door man, or control man. Am I close?
  19. LOVE ME THAT LADDER!
  20. Please keep in mind, and be respectful, that the victim is the brother of a very long term President of a local FD, as well as the responding FD's Past Chief's brother in law. Prayers for all involved in this horrific incident.
  21. Marine 1 went 10-9 last night.
  22. Shoot the inside of the box with Rhino Lining and it would be perfect!
  23. I pick things up and put them down.
  24. And to think you poor bastards take a test and actually TRY to get on the cop job.....Stay safe!
  25. As the late Andy Fredericks said, "The FDNY's most effective suppression method? We send hundreds of guys and stomp the fire out!"
