We rely on a commercial EMS agency to provide services during daytime hours....you'd be hard pressed to get them out of the AC'ed bus. We just put a mini-fridge stocked with water on our ladder truck.

Well I hope you guys escape the cross hairs next year Marc. I know how much pride you have in your company!

More from Google Images...pretty slick set ups.

Which leads to the question, when is too much? Or more specifically, when do the warning lights become a safety hazard themselves? With the rear interior light sticks activated, is it even possible to use the command center/board? Do the sticks in the front grille block enough air to cause the truck to overheat when "run hard"? What would be a better option for highway rear warning? I am still a BIG fan of rotating lights on the roof of rigs...they do things LED and strobe cant..they can flash around corners, bouce off of building, signs, etc... a good mix of LED and rotating lights can be a very effective warning system. The instal is typical of SWS, impeccable. The truck is nice and I wish the department well with it, may they never need the rear warning for it's intended purpose.

Cap - a question if you have the answer; Let's say I spec a rig and want the rear to have the NFPA colored chevrons, BUT only one of the colors to be reflective, the other painted, non reflective. Would we still have to sign the waiver? Again, it would still be the two approved colors. Also - is there a minumum surface area that has to be covered? Say I wanted to stop the chevrons approx a foot or so from the sides of the rig to prevent the halo/glow you mentioned? Thanks.

Guys - just remember, that one of the main reasons so many of the local fire photogs stopped posting pics here is for posts like these. Images capture one MILLISECOND in time at an incident that is typically very busy. What you very well may be seeing is a guy putting his helmet down to take safety glasses out of the crown (common place to put them), then popping it right back on...could have been stung by a bee...anythinG! It is not always perfect, textbook operations on a fire scene, you do what needs to be done to save lives and property. If you have a problem with something in a picture, make a note of it, and make sure YOUR guys don't do it...use it as a learning experience. It is NOT our place to second guess the members actions in public, well, unless of course you work for Firefighter Close Calls.. I am glad the Chief posted above - clears up some questions. And let me clarify, I was not MMQ'ing the FAST decision, I was adding MY opinion. As a fireman who routinely operates without the added benefit of a deidcated FASTeam, it is something I feel is very important. Someday I hope to work to fix that on our end.... Good to see RM in action to boot!

"John Wayne Time" Circa 1991 "It's jumping floors on ya Lieutenant!" "Yeah...howsabout them second in companies?" "Ha! Mayor shut them down, John Wayne time, you're on your own!"

I'll buy that...excellent point.

Holy Rear Whoopie Lights! KInda makes the chevrons moot....guarentee you cant see them!

Poor excuse for any department. FAST on a minumum of the "working fire". Nice work by the guys on the scene.

This kind of program is nothing new - and it can work well as evidenced by Kentland and other departments in Kentland County ( ). http://www.firehouse.com/topic/strategy-and-tactics/pa-volunteer-fire-company-begins-live-program What are your thoughts on this set up? I want to like it, and I KNOW, without a doubt that I would have been ALL OVER such a deal back in my younger years, before a family....but I am concerned in areas without the manpower base PG County brings - it is just smoke and mirrors (the Emporer's clothes bit is spoken for..LOL).... Also - as has been stated in the past in regards to rostering volunteer fire crews, where members are assigned times to be at the firehouse, is it considered scab labor? Cliff NOtes; is this a slippery slope?
-
Now don't get all crazy on us..LOL It was brought up a few years ago and that is how a member compared rostering...no big deal. Don't take it personal. And for the record - i personally do not beleive it to be scab labor...a volunteer is a volunteer regardless of where they are before a response..be it home, the station, or Walmart.
-
But...being part of a mutual aid agrrement prohibits that...at least for now.
-
It happens daily in some areas.....and you are right..it is an abuse.

I like the tips on reading asmoke...

I do....for real...it would be nice to get out of "the chair".. Why would a County want to take something on that commercials companies are fighting each other for? Just like you said - they may award a county wide system to a commercial...which would make sense..IF you could get everybody on board. And one last point; I feel that once an agency hires paid EMS personel, they can no longer use the "VAC" moniker...
