I know a guy who has a secret room - not around here, but out in the mid-west. It is a home archery shop / man cave hidden behind a custom wooden book case. While it is a very cool idea, it obviously has it pitfalls. Also, check this link from VES.com. It is a small sleeping room with two children's beds recessed into a knee wall, and covered with a sliding curtain. http://www.vententersearch.com/?p=1433

Bright lights, paeticularly LED create a halo at night around the vehicle..anyone standing in that halo are in immediate danger of not being seen and possibly getting struck, no matter how many reflective vests or chevron decals they have on their gear! WE NEED TO STOP SPEC'ING, ORDERING, AND BUYING STUFF JUST BECAUSE WE WANT TO HAVE THE BEST IN OUR AREA (or self percieved best)! Times are tough for all of us, taxpayers especially - we need to respect them (which by the way, is US!) and manage our (their) money more wisely. Streamline the apparatus...skip the useless chrome bell and fancy paint jobs...simplify...

FD - AWESOME PICS!!!!!! I absolutely love the pics of inside the firehouses...gives an inside view of the most storied and traditional part of the fire service!

As was asked and OK'ed, it is permissible to post a heads up or "possible" in the Shout Box.

LOL..I see it now...wow. Again - losing a front line apparatus can be devastating, as we have experienced some years ago to an accident.

WTF? Is the pump operator wearing an indian head dress? Sorry for the loss of a rig..

Bravo! GREAT post! And remember - this can happen ANYWHERE, in any town.

"Dispatcher.....we'll need 30 large pies to the scene......"
-
LOL..

Respectfully disagree Cap. I think too many lights can actually be a safety hazard/.

Charcoal, no. Hay, yes. Another good reason why I keep my trash can away from house. The other reason is bears..LOL

Can someone familiar with these type of buildings or that was on scene give a quick rundown on the construction? Appears standard stick build with knee wall/voids on the second floor loft and perhaps on the ground floor? With the shingles/roof running to the ground, I would imagine these types of houses really hold the heat and smoke until the front or rear windows fail, making ventilation that more urgent? Is this a summer "cottage" or a year round residence? What was the layout as far as the interioir stairs? VERY interesting building, I like fires like this...thanks.

It has been my experience, being an EMD since 1999, that it can not, and will not allow the dispatcher to make that determination. You KNOW a true emergency when you get one on the phone, but EMD does not identify it. I have found that EMD over-sends in most instances, which is better to do than to under-send...I also find EMD to be less than effective in an urban environment.

M'ave....and other large career departments, does a fireman HAVE to learn to be a driver or chauffer? I mean - can someone go a whole career without ever driving?
-
That roof is a truckie's dream! 4 x 4 hole? SURE...4 ACRES!

That sounds great John - and actually right along the lines of what I am thinking. However, up in Dutchess, we dont have a 10-75 designation, other than in the City of Poughkeepsie. I am working on a "working fire" designation instead fore "someday"....

SHOULD BE and what happens are usually two very different animals.

Another question, based loosely off of the original post, if I may; What EMS resources, in addition to rehab, do you have at your hot weather fires and "working" incidents? Do you have additional standby/transport units? Do you call them? Do they have a set assignment; as in park as to not get blocked in, report to the staging area with stretcher and gear, etc? In my opinion, only ONE ambulance at a scene of a fire or manpower intensive incident is inadequate. We need to be ready to have immediate treatment AND transport for located fire victims, injured MOS, distraught homeowners, etc....especially in areas where it is common to not have an ambulance respond immediatly. Plan now...be ready now.
