  1. I can speak from experience, as I was the lead dispatcher on an active shooter two years ago or so (not in a school, but a municipal building with daytime staffing) ..ON THE DISPATCH end; EMS and Fire units responding in for EMS duty/staging followed the orders of the police command on scene, relayed through the dispatcher. I loaded up the assignment with a few extra buses, and dispatched them to the staging area as determined by the police IC. There was no set protocol or alarm assignment. Thankfully these additional resources were not needed.
  2. Yes....LOL...him. An EMD since 1999....has let any and all cards issued by NYS lapse... But then again...he would only be interested in per-Diem...and would have a problem with that at a union shop...
  3. Date:02/27 Time:1446 Location:37 Gobbler's Knob Rd Frequency: DC911 and Dover F/G Units Operating: JHK 36-13,12, 14, Town of Dover Ambo 1, NDP, NYSP, DCBF CC9, CC14 Weather Conditions: Nice Description Of Incident: Heavy fire (room and contents with open floor plan) on 1st floor Reporters: Writer: 129k UVFD to relocate to Dover Station 2 Amenia relocate to Dover 1 First due stretched in, fast knockdown, no extension, searches conducted above with negative results. Neat, large wood frame house, open floor plan throughout, particularly on floor 2. Had the fire taken hold of the second floor, there were 5 large skylight windows that could have been used for ventilation. Good job by Salty Dawg, Doober, and the rest of the crew...I as always was late to the party due to childcare issues..LOL
  4. Agreed..I just didnt want to come across looking like a 'cowboy" who rushes into any fire without thinking or doing a proper size up.
  5. While Camden is a FARRRRRRRRRR cry from where I am from, this is, as always, a good read from Gabe; http://cmdfd.blogspot.com/2012/01/some-vacants-episode-1.html
  6. Bingo. All too often we get in the mindset that the fire MUST be an arson job and the suspect is long gone. Not the case alot of times.
  7. Was this in an urban or suburban area?
  8. There are plenty of vacants in every township and city across the US...and in most urban areas, they account for a large portion of work for fire and police.... With the current economic crisis, the proliferation of buildings of all styles and sizes becoming vacant is astounding...and many are in severe disrepair. That will not be changing anytime soon sadly, so we must adapt to it - we meaning suburban and more rural departments...as you urban fireman have been dealing with these for..well, forever. In a class, the slide show had some vacant buildings on it, and I found some of the remarks and responses to be concerning... One pic showed a vacant with windows and doors covered in plywood...fire had good control of the attic and there were guys on the roof near the dormers..."Why? It's just an abandoned building". Why indeed. Looking at the pic, I pointed out how the boards on 2 of the 3 basment windows were removed. I stated "That's where the squatters are getting in. The guys by the dormers just VES'ed." No, I don't have three heads...but the looks said otherwise. But that cant happen here in the sticks...this isnt the Big City....right? What about the hardowrking guy who works all of his life to pay a mortgage and loses his job due to the economy..the house is forclosed on, but his proud, stubborn, self "breaks back into" his own house for a plce to stay...(I know if I were in that situation, I WOULD!)NO heat or elctric, he does what he needs to for warmth...a fire starts. What about the local teens who break into a vacant house in the neighborhood to partake in the latest craze....heroin..(it's the new weed around here sadly!)..they may overdose or nod off for a while..smokign materials fall to the trash laden floor...a fire starts. What about the group of "undocumented immigrants" that seem to take over areas...they work for peanuts, and spend those peanuts on beer...so maybe they take up residency in a local vacant...a late night of partying, they pass out..a fire starts. What about the scrappers...they break into a vacant to steal any metal they can...cutting out pipes with a torch...a fire starts. Far fetched in suburbia? You are absolutely kidding yourself if you think a vacant is 100 percent vacant 100 percent of the time. Food for thought. While I respect the opinions of the guys involved in that class, I just want to point out that it CAN happen around here...to expect it..to prepare for it. Will it happen? I hope not...just keep your mind open. Am I advocating rushing into and on every vacant building on fire? Hell no, I dont want to die for a vacant...I don't want to get hurt on a vacant. But if there is even a slight indication that there is a life inside that building, we need to be prepared to fight that fire aggressivly..like any other house fire.
  9. Ahhhhh...the good old days when the buildings weren't trying nearly so hard to kill us.
  10. What are you looking to get for each? I am interested in the mOntgomery mug - my Dad used to be a Lieutenant and President of that company when I was a kid.
  11. Seriously...that White hat left a dude on a roof that obviously had fire under it, BY HIMSELF.....BY HIMFRIGGINSELF! He would have NEVER known if that FF fell through the roof....
  12. That guy in the while helmet has ABSOLUTELY no business being on a fire scene....he made me so mad I wanted to punch my computer..LOL
  13. Relax bud, like I said, I may not agree with it, but I respect your opinion and sticking to your guns.....
  14. Close to Little River...I beleive the spot we access the beach is in Mureils Inlet....been a few years since we have been down..maybe this year.
  15. Oh you're crazy regardless...crazier than a schitt house rat...but I give you credit for standing up for what you beleive in..even if you are wrong.
  16. Was that you!? LOL!
  17. Indeed it was! Rep administered....
  18. Prior to AMR, what private ambulance company occupied the same building next to Empress? Winner gets a rep point.
  19. That sounds about perfect for cooking up one of those deer! I'd even come down and make you all a venison dinner to die for...bacon wrapped backdtraps...garlic potatoes..cesar sald...veggies....and nice cold....MILK! LOL

  21. I worked at Empress before, during, and after the organization of the IAEP...so I have seen both sides...the increase in pay was nice...but I was a young guy then, I thought the pay was decent to start with...especially compared to the agencies that covered my home...(I lived in Dutchess, commuted to Westchester for 7 years)..but perhaps the biggest "benefit" was knowing that even though you were working for a FAMILY owned private BUSINESS, they could not get a wild hair up their rearends and just fire you on the spot...it HAD to be justified. And of course - as mentioned, it does offer protection to those who operate with the anchor down...problematic employees who truly didnt deserve the job. There was also the PRIDE associated with belonging to a "Union Family"...I mean, we were working in YONKERS for crying out loud - if THAT aint a Union Town, I dont know what is! I still have my little IAEP pin on the band on my fire helmet...just 'cause. Now would Mobile Life truly benefit from organizing? I have no idea...I dont know enough about them. I will say this; MLSS employees have the highest morale of ANY private I have ever seen. I deal with them now in Poughkeepsie and I have absolutely nothing negative to say about them at all..they are a very professional, well run company and the most important thing in my book - THEY HANDLE THEIR JOBS AND DO IT WELL. I hesitate to say we are spolied by them here...but damn close. LOL. BUT if EMS wants to be seen as an equal service with police and fire, they need to UP the ante...they need to start holding themselves to a higher standard, be more professional, and market the JOB as a true equal 3rd service.
  22. Based on some of your past posts, it would appear that you could benefit from union employment.....
