  1. SPAAMFAA founder Dick Horstmann's beautiful antique Seagrave, and an equally beautiful Maxim pumper from "Marion". Didn't catch what state......must learn to take notes! ::: bangs head against wall :::::
  2. Sea gulls enjoying the "calm before the storm" prior to the start of the Inner Harbor event. Hey, if Seth can shoot ducks, I can shoot sea gulls! Right? RIGHT!
  3. Artwork on the compartments of the Thibault ladder:
  4. While the "boys" were busy playing in the water, I wandered around the various locations and shot a few of what else was on display. 1986 Duplex/Thibault ladder, ex-Brantford, Ontario, Canada. Now privately owned.
  5. I'd hardly call them "over equipped".....unless they've gotten a ton of new stuff in the last few weeks.
  6. I, too, was shocked and saddened when I read this news this morning on Firepics. A horrible ending for an outstanding weekend, and a great event. May the officer and the CFFF member rest in peace. EDIT: It was actually the 50th Anniversary SPAAMFAA convention and muster that he was returning home from, not a "parade" as the article states (although there was one, of sorts, Saturday morning enroute to the muster site).
  7. The first Pierce Velocity to be delivered in Orange County (and the lower Hudson Valley area in general, for that matter) arrived at Goshen Station 3 - Dikeman Engine & Hose - tonight. The new Engine 932 will replace the existing 1989 Pierce Arrow engine.
  8. 932's specs: 2008 Pierce Velocity - 6 man cab - 1500 GPM pump - 1000 gallon tank - 25 gallons Class A foam and, as promised, the Pierce Job number is...... 20217
  9. Spell check will only tell you if the word is spelled correctly. It won't determine that it's not being used in the right context. Most common example: there - they're - their. Three words. Same sound. Different spelling, different meaning. And don't even get me started on apostrophes. When did it become common practice to use an apostrophe to make a word plural? I must have missed that memo. I belong to several message boards, of various subject matter, and this is a common "sore spot" among the members of most all of them. Teens and adults who post things that would make you think they're in third grade, or less. Sadly, no matter how many threads like this turn up, the worst offenders will either not get the message, or just go on the defensive and/or get an attitude about it, etc. Nice to know I'm not alone in wishing that everyone would use the education they were given, particularly that which is provided in the form of English class!
  10. 4 is a little too young to have access to that kind of thing. 4 should be sitting on the curb with his little red plastic helmet on, watching in awe as the big shiny trucks roll by. Just my $.02 (but I do see the point you're making).
  11. There's no reason why kids (and people in general) can't have fun without making a mess of things. Just because silly string is there, doesn't mean it has to be used and/or abused. No need to outlaw "fun". Seems to me, based on past discussions on here, that if some people had their way, there wouldn't be parades at all. But, we don't need to go down "that road" again.
  12. I'll find out Saturday at the wetdown.
  13. There's enough companies up this way who barely even bother to wash their rigs anymore, much less detail for a parade, so I don't see where the silly string complaints would make an issue one way or the other. Does make for some much less appealing pictures, though. I agree with the comments about both the carts and the judges. Neither one of 'em cares about anyone on the sidelines or in the line of march. All they care about is doing their "job", and if they get in somebody's way, that's just tough for that person. Nice attitude, huh? At least in Long Island, they post in advance where the judges are gonna be, so you can pick a vantage point elsewhere. Makes me want, that much more, to go to the pre-parade judging site for photo ops. But, not everyone uses that, either.
  14. Golden's Bridge Engine 140 is missing off the list - 1994 Dash (as per FDNYTrucks.com)
  15. Mount Kisco has two or three Pierce engines, and Verplanck has an engine. Not sure of all the intricate details of each, but I'm sure somebody else can fill in the blanks. Pretty sure Bedford Hills has an engine or two as well. Also, Goldens Bridge (older Dash engine).
  16. If there was ANY justice at all in this world, they'd be closing the "other" Middletown location, and it would revert back to being the Krispy Kreme that it began life as......but then again, I'm s'posed to be on a diet anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter one way or the other.
  17. My first name's already in my screen name. Does that count?
  18. Wow, that's pretty interesting (the cost of tillers, that is). Not sure what a rear-mount stick goes for nowadays, but I've heard of more than one tower/platform that hovered in the general area of a million. What factors go into the sizeable difference?
  19. Happy Anniversary! Hope things are going as well as can be.
  20. The "bad" part about the late start time is that it's dark before the thing's over.....even if you are right at the start of it. I did that a few years back. My pics came out better than they had any right to, but still would have been nice if it was a little earlier. Just my opinion........which, along with 90 cents will buy you a candy bar. Although, it's probably just as well that some parades are held on weekday evenings. There's only just so many Saturdays in a "buff season" and most of them are already grossly overbooked as it is. I hope to be there, if I can scrape up the cash for half a tank of gas. Haven't seen any Westchester rigs since I went digital. Would be great if that could change!
  21. Great pics of Lodi's event. Unfortunately, by the time I got there, "most" of the fun (and food) was already done. My NJ buddies have already been thanked for having the courtesy of not making my bad day worse by telling me I missed the ex-Croton Mack. That's just the breaks of having multiple events on the same day. I first went to Pine Bush, NY (Orange Co.) for their wetdown. Was there just over an hour.....not a single truck came in. Nada, zip, zilch....and the food was late getting on, too. Highlight there was the ASI T-shirt! Didn't even pass anybody coming in after I left. Wonder if it ever did get going?
  22. Yeah, that's what I thought it was.....warning = funnel spotted. Oh well, I guess it depends on the source, sometimes, and the info they're given. The Weather Channel isn't much better right now. According to the radar, I should be getting slammed right now. What I see out the window is a mere sprinkle compared to what I drove through in NJ Saturday night. Hmmmm..... Hopefully everyone else fares just as well.
  23. I thought "warning" meant one is actually HAPPENING? Geez....I wish the media-types would get their terminology straight! Second time today this has happened. First was in Sullivan Co. a few hours ago. Regardless, stay safe, everyone!
  24. To the best of my knowledge, no bids have been awarded yet. Up for replacement are Engine 4 (Phoenix - '87 Pierce Arrow) and Engine 6 (Waalkills - '88 Pierce Lance). Truck 1 (Excelsior H&L - '89 Simon-Duplex/LTI tiller) also has a committee in place and is looking at a new rig within the next year or two. That'll probably be another mil (or close to it) by itself. Hopefully these will all arrive before the 150th Anniversary parade next October. Would be nice if they did, anyway.
  25. The Catskill Fire Cats (Catskill Chapter, SPAAMFAA) will present their 32nd Annual Antique Fire Apparatus Show and Muster on Sunday, June 8th 2008. The event will be held, rain or shine, from 9 AM to 4 PM. The location is the same as last year's event - the site of a large warehouse containing part of a massive privately owned collection of antique and classic fire apparatus. This facility has been profiled in Fire Apparatus Journal magazine, 1st Responder News, and many other local news and media outlets, as the site of a FUTURE fire apparatus museum. The muster will be held on the grounds surrounding the warehouse. The physical address of the site is 2618 Route 302, Middletown, NY 10941. Over 100 trucks are currently stored at this site. Many will be outside on display the day of the event. We hope that many other fire departments and individuals alike will join us with their antique/classic rigs as well. Apparatus 1983 and older will be eligible for show judging, with trophies to be awarded at the conclusion of the event. Dash plaques will be given to the first 100 show entries that register. In addition to the massive apparatus display, there will also be team competitions. Events including Hose Rolling, Bucket Brigade, Midnight Alarm, and a tug of war (replacing Water Barrel). There will also be some children's events. Firematic vendors are also welcome. Fees for this year's show are as follows: - Apparatus for show = $25 per truck - Competiton team = $15 per team - Firematic flea market vendor = $25 per 10x20' space, plus donation of an item for a door prize (min. value $5) There will also be door prizes, 50/50 drawings, food and refreshments, and yours truly will be raffling off two die-cast model trucks. Both of the models are based on actual apparatus that is stored on site. To request registration info, please contact Bob Reynolds at (845) 343-4746, or PM me through the board. We are also seeking individuals, businesses or fire departments to sponsor some of the trophies which will be awarded for both the truck show and the team competitions. All forms are available as hard copy, or can be e-mailed in PDF format (I have the PDF's). We hope you will consider joining us. Bring a truck, bring a team, or just bring yourself. It promises to be a great day.
