  1. I'm not sure of the date I think it was 4/1/1988, I was 10 years old. I woke up from a sound sleep because I was sweating like a pig. Out my window was an orange glow, my room must have been 100 degrees. The house next door 150 feet away was completely engulfed in flames. (Morningside Drive Croton) So it happened, a mother and 2 (maybe 3) children perished in the blaze. Numerous rescue attempts by neighbors and firefighters were not successful. The morning after this horrible event I knew I wanted to be a fireman.
  2. Congrats to my boys at 119!!! I have been through the bid specs and trust me there has been no pebble left unturned. My hat goes off to the truck committee (especially the chair). I will try my best for a million dollar pumper in 2013
  3. In croton you get the added challenge of dodging arrows headed for your a**.
  4. ..........................................
  5. Just wondering if any of you guys share my second love?
  6. I will have to try that approach.....lol
  7. Muns, I could bag bucks wearing my stinky turnout gear. It's all about stand placement and good scouting. My chest freezer will runneth over in 2 weeks, where does Mr. Pink live anyway? Senor Alta-gomez has 3 deer in the front yard every day at 4:30, tell him to watch out for arrows with a blue c*** feather. [-X Good luck to all.... How does a 300 pound guy totally disappear in the woods anyway?
  8. My love affair with the whitetail starts on friday and sadly ends new years eve. I am so excited I can't sleep. I also enjoy hunting with my rifle, shotgun, and muzzelloader but the up-close and personal expirience of a sucessful bowhunt is second to none.
  9. Our Holomatro combi tool was put into service (E-118) about two weeks ago. All I can say is WOW! For a manual power tool it really kicks A$$. It is very light which makes it ultra manuverable, the handle swivels 360 degrees so you can certainly use it almost anywhere. I will not tell you it works as fast as a powered tool, because it doesn't. But after you factor in the set up time, it is probably pretty close. For a simple door pop it is the nuts......give me this tool a sawsall and three guys with some expirience, and most any pin job can be handeled. Looking forward to using powered Halmatro tools....
  10. We (118) had a great drill with it while we should have been cleaning for inspection  Unbelivable power for a manual tool, can use it at any angle and in very small spaces.
  11. Remember, we are all buffs here... Unfortunatly FX needs more than just the buffs to watch the show. I aree with most posts here that there is not enough fire, but at least it won't turn into a cop oriented show after the first couple of episodes. Would you rather watch yet another stupid a** reality show? 2nd favorite show behind Sopranos, gotta wait 2 more years for a new episode.
  12. If the plate your working on is not in great shape, start with a good acid wash. **Find someone who knows what they are doing so you dont turn it all white** Phase I, Aching Hands, If you get the plate clean enough wax it, souns a bit nuts but it slows down the effects of that crazy gas we can't live without.
  13. Possibly the yorktown guys can work out some sort of barter with these soccer milfs I mean moms.
  14. Good Episode...Very, Very Funny. Not the huge letdown third watch was. I DO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH DENNIS LEARY BEING A DIE HARD BOSTON RED SUX FAN. [-X [-X [-X
  15. Man I wish I could fix parade results...Maybe I wouldnt have to polish so much diamond plate. I would certainly be able to open my hands all the way right now.
  16. 2 quckies... Standard operating procedures (SOP's) can't be flexible they are procedures. Standard Operating Guidelines (SOG'S) can be flexible. If the 1st due apparatus is an engine, the engineer should not prevent the incoming truck from being in the proper location.
  17. Good Topic.... The first answer that comes to my mind is an Engine, of course I’m an Engine man. As HFD 211 said a well trained engine company can very easily perform truck tasks if properly equipped to do so. In my humble opinion all volunteer engine's should be outfitted as "squads" with chainsaw's, search ropes, forcible entry equipment, extrication equipment, multiple sets of hand tools etc. The simple reason being; you never know what apparatus will get out the door first. Getting a Truck to the scene first surely has its benefits. My department's truck happens to have a 2000 gpm pump and could very easily be used as a combination apparatus. ONLY if hydrants are readily available, we certainly couldn't maneuver the apparatus to draft and perform aerial operations simultaneously. If the alarm was at a building over 3 stories I would initially want the truck. We all have to remember (myself included) that preservation of life is paramount; saving insured property is a distant second. In my district we have only a few buildings that fit this category but one is a nursing home. For these commercial structures I want the truck first. In the end there is no correct answer to this question. There are a ton of variables that could make a truck or an engine more useful in different scenarios. One way to help choose the appropriate apparatus is a comprehensive district PREPLAN. We all know what a preplan is and they may be the answer to this question.
  18. I think swanky is going to propose to E119, John can be the best man...
  19. WOW! Muns I hope you give these guys the courtesy of a reach around!! Maybe 119 will win inspection this year, you think?
