  1. Skooters post is correct. You can't have a radio in you vehicle that has a police channel receiving the signals of a PD. How the incident is handled is up to the individual cop who makes the stop.
  2. Briarcliff had two 1956 Mack B-85's. One was a pumper for Engine 94 that served until 1984 and the other was a 75' ladder truck truck that served until 1982. Both were beautiful rigs. I believe the ladder went to a department in New Hampshire and I forget where the pumper went.
  3. Alot of good comments in here along with some that seem misquided. There is alot that if I had the time I would take me all night to add. I will say though that be careful for what you wish for. 911 is not the cure for everything. Check and advise does have its appropriate uses depending upon the circumstances.
  4. OVAC runs 12 hour shifts from 6AM to 6PM and 6PM to 6AM. They use both volunteer and per diem medics. They also supply the medic for the tri village fly car which covers the ALS calls in both Briarcliff and Croton FD's. They have a bunk room for overnight shifts.
  5. Archville fire itself dates back to about 1909. Around 1929 they merged their fire district with the Village of Briarcliff to provide coverage to the west side of Briarcliff. This arrangement lasted until the fall of 1971 when because of a disagreement with the Village of Briarcliff over water rates and because of a decision from the state over a fire district being part of a municipal department. Starting in 1972 Archville operated again on their own as the company for the Scarborough fire district which they were always part of. Their current firehouse was constructed in the mid 60's and after the split with briarcliff they continued to operate their 1966 Hahn. When Ossining replaced their Engine 98 in 1973 they purchased their old Engine to act as a backup. They operate with Pocantico Hills on duel responses and their EMS for the most part is provided by BMFD ambulance and the Mt. Pleasant Medic.
  6. The Musters were originally started and run by the old Fairchesters Hose Haulers Assn. The first few started with a parade that came down through Valhalla and then followed by the games and show. There were great fun team events, the apparatus pumping out of the pool, a giant flea market, apparatus just to look at and great comraderie. Like everything else in the fire service, the same guys did all the work and there was alot to be done with that muster. Two of the main guys that made it work were Howie Phieffer from Mohegan and A. J. Quirk from Mamaroneck. I believed there were also some issues with the County and the direction that they wanted to see the dam area become. When the muster moved to Croton, it just couldn't compete with what the dam had to offer.
  7. Archville runs the two engines you stated. Engine 235 & 236. They also have a Ford Explorer Chief's car 2631 and an older Jeep that I'm not sure if it is still used. They also have an antique 1909 hand pumper.
  8. Briarcliff has no manpower problems. It is just a call protocal as is in many other departments and the also have a truck roll with the ambulance to help lift the patient because sometimes they are to heavy for some of our ambulance crews and a extra hand is needed. Our job is to help out the community and serve. We are trying to help patient care and ability to take them to where they need to go to get help as fast as possible. If it requires a few firemen who are stronger then the personnel on the ambulance to speed the patient removal process and overall operation then let them respond.
  9. On that call the BMFD ambulance was dispatched and the ambulance responds with Engine 92 or Rescue 37 depending on the side of town and the trucks provide EMS assist. At that car accident the patient was very heavy and the two ambulance members on scene could not handle the patient's weight so Engine 92 was sent to help lift the patient and 92 then responded with the ambulance to Phelps to help lift the patient out of ambulance and throught the hospital. For further incidents, Briarcliff Ambulance roles first due to accidents in Archville's district and 92 usually stands by and waits for orders from the chief as to whether to respond or not.
  10. MAIN STREET SWEETS ON MAIN STREET IN TARRYTOWN MAKES THEIR OWN ICE CREAM WHICH IS EXCELANT. THEY ALSO HAVE THAT OLD STYLE DECOR. IF YOU WANT A REALLY GOOD MALT THEN TRY JOHNNY ROCKETS AT THE PALISADES MALL, THERE THE BEST
  11. Engine 94 is suppose to be replace with a new engine or rescue pumper. It is a 1981 Mack now and I believe the bids were sent out for it this year. I heard that they are looking at a seagrave and hope to have it delivered in 2007. Doug E should know more then me so maybe he can update you on this.
  12. 635 I HAVE TO DISAGREE WITH YOU ON THE AMBULANCE DESIGNATIONS BEING PERFECT. I HAVE BEEN INVOLVED WITH EMERGENCY SERVICES FOR 32 YEARS AND DISPATCHING FOR 22 OF THOSE YEARS. I CAN STILL RATTLE OFF THE OLD CALL SIGNS OF MILLWOOD AND OTHER DEPARTMENTS, BUT I COULDN'T TELL YOU WHICH AMBULANCE IS WHICH ANYMORE. BEFORE THE CHANGE OVER IT WAS SIMPLE TO REMEMBER WHO WAS WHO. NOW 53B1 BLENDS IN WITH 55B1 AND 63B1 AND WHEN THE S HITS THE FAN I BET MOST PEOPLE HAVE NO IDEA WHICH RIG IS WHICH. THE ONLY ONE WHO NEEDS TO KNOW IF THE MEDIC IS ON BOARD IS THE DISPATCHER FOR THAT AREA. THE RIG IS GOING TO SAY ENROUTE ALS OR THE MEDIC WILL CALL BACK IN SERVICE WITH THE RIG GOING BLS. KEEP IT SIMPLE
  13. CISD SHOULD BE STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE FOR ALL MAJOR INCIDENTS. THE HUDSON VALLEY CISM TEAM IS MADE UP OF FIRE, EMS, POLICE, DISPATCHERS AND OTHER PEER COUNSELORS. THE TEAM IS DISPATCHED THROUGH COUNTY FIRE CONTROL AND IS AVAILABLE 24/7
  14. The dealer for this area back then was Carl Thuge and I believe he is still in business selling another brand. Ours was a 1974 CF and was built in Allentown and all service after that was in the Queen's facility. If I can find my info with what brand Carl is selling now I will post it.
  15. ENG 8022- DO YOU KNOW WHY THEY PICKED THE BLUE AND GREY COLOR? IT IS VERY UNUSUAL FOR THIS AREA. THERE MUST BE SOME HISTORY TO IT
  16. Alot of good comments in this forum. As the years have gone by most departments have gone from no response with PD's checking alarms to full department responses. The ultimate responsibility lies with the FD to develop protocols as to how they want an alarm handled in their jurisdiction. My company operates that we continue into an alarm until told different by the incident commander. We will take any updates from the dispatcher under advisement as to whether we go 10-20 or not, but continue in until an FD officer advises different. You can't blame the PD or 60 control dispatchers if they relay info to you and the incident commander doesn't at least have someone from the FD check the location to determine the cause. Too many homeowners and business's will attempt to cancel to save getting hit with a fine.
  17. IT MAY NOT BE THE BEST WAY TO GO ABOUT STARTING A FULL TIME PAID DEPARTMENT, BUT AT LEAST THEY REALIZE THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM AND THEY ARE TRYING TO ADDRESS IT. WE CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS. IF THIS WORKS FOR THEM AND IT FILLS A NEED THEN HOPEFULLY AS TIME GOES ON THEY WILL MOVE TO MAKE THEM CAREER FIREFIGHTERS RATHER THAN USING OTHER TITLES. THE NAME OF THE GAME IS PROTECTING THE PUBLIC AND WE ALL HAVE TO BE CREATIVE TO SURVIVE.

  19. I have to go with the section of Route 9 from Route 117 to the Arcadian Shopping Center. Over the years it has killed and injured probably more people then any other stretch of road. Every telephone pole on that stretch has had to be replaced multiple times. With the amount of large trucks that travel on that road there are always people crossing over the double yellow lines to pass them.
  20. Popularity is how it seems to be done. Our department requires a number of N.Y.S. courses in order to run for chief. This is great for when the lawsuits fly, but classes are one thing and common sense is another. I have brought up a number of times to our department that the courses are great, but what if you have a member who is 50 years old and just moved from another state. He could have been a chief and had courses from that state. He won't be able to run for chief the way were set up.
  21. Just for the record. Engine 92 from Briarcliff which was first engine on the scene carries both class A and class B foam which was used on the initial attack
  22. I am from Scarborough Engine Company and I am not sure where that 500,000 is going but E-94 needs to be replaced just as bad as the Ladder but I don't know what the town and fire council have planned.
