I went to school with old man Landi's nephew. We used to run to the Bronx for him and pick up his supplies at the warehouse. We got paid with wedges!!!! It was funny to watch him make them. The same knife went from the mayo to the mustard and back and was never cleaned off in between. Man do I miss those wedges!!!!!!

You're better off going over how to turn on, calibrate the unit at an incident and what it reads. Review your action level settings and what you expect members to do when it alarms (mask up , etc). You could also discuss past incidents that were monitored and what the source was and how it was resolved (sources that would cause an alarm, proper vent techniques). The last thing you want to do is burn out a sensor or two or three and pay to have it replaced - $$$$$.

I just heard YFD dispatch assign Rescue 2 to a job. Is Yonkers FD now staffing 2 rescues in the city round the clock or is it a temporary/special assignment unit that is in service on occasion? And if it is staffed 24/7 is it equally equipped and trained as Rescue 1 (heavy rescue)?

Thanks for the quick reply and clearing that up for me.

I agree with several other posts. We don't know all of the circumstances. More than once my crew has been asked by the utility company to put out burning wires/pole after they killed the juice and we knew it was off. The pictures shouldn't be viewed as "WTF are they doing?!", but as "what would I do??" And, how would I do it safely if the power was on, off, etc. Run the gamut of scenarios and come up with the rights answers. What the department did in the photos is done. Glad no one got hurt. Leave it at that. And by the way, at least someone remembered not to use water on an electrical fire

The current 1985 ALF is going to be available once new rig is in. A few depts have expressed interest in it already.

The new truck will be a KME tiller and we just went down a few weeks ago to inspect the tractor portion. It was going to VA to have the ladder/tractor mounted. That will take 4-5 weeks. Then it comes back to PA and has compartments, etc mounted- another 4 weeks. Looking at a mid-to-end of July delivery.

Barry, What is the spec on Rescue 4 that you said in an earlier post "was never done on a Rescue before"? Please leave out all of the missiles, etc. I'm talking about rescue equipment, not tactical (sorry all of my old ESU friends). Hope all is well and post lots of info/pics about the rescue- it's a beauty!! Your old friend, Wheezer who fell in the well PS- Guess where I'm working now??

One of the first things you could do is sign up for the Elevator Rescue course offered by NYS. Along with that, to become proficient on your specific make/model elevator, find out which manufacturer made it and once it's installed, have one of their repair technicians go through emergency procedures with you such as locating and lockout/tagout the power source, whether the elevator is cable or hydraulic and how it operates, gaining access to the elevator car, manually opening the doors, etc. I have found they are more than happy to help you because if you force entry inot the elevator and screw it up, it's more headaches for them. Also see if they'll give you the correct elevator drop key. If you only have two elevators in your district, no need to buy the entire set. As for in service training, at minimum you can do a powerpoint and have the tech show you around, but you should also have him let you do hands on with the actual elevator car. As someone else mentioned, Mike Dragonetti runs an excellent elevator rescue class as well.
