Yesterday, I saw this truck parked over at Department of Public Safety at Hawthorne (County PD HQ). This may be replacing their tow truck.

"The club said on its Web site that the event, run in conjunction with C.O.P Firearms and Training, is "all legal and fun." People are allowed to fire weapons at vehicles, pumpkins and other targets, it said." This article does not put this group in the best light. It reads like they run on the loose and wild side when they they state they fire at vehicles. During my firearms training many years ago, I was taught when you fire you should know where your bullet will end up. Firing at vehicles invites ricochets, and that means you do not know where that round is going.

While at the WCFTC last night, I noticed a brand new International (it still had the temporary inspection sticker on it) mid-size flat bed truck parked near U76. This flat bed has the Westchestergov emblem on the doors. Does anyone know if this will be assigned to DES or some other County Department?

As a Firefighter who had the priviledge of attending the International Code Conference's Convention in Minneapolis and voting for these residential sprinkler requirements I want to clarify a few points. Yes, the ICC through it's 2009 edition of the International Residential Code will require Sprinkler Systems in one and two family dwellings and townhomes, see IRC - R313 (2009). The effective date for this requirement is January 1, 2011. This date was set so that building and code officials, and the construction industry could become familiar with what is required to comply with this requirement. Sage - ICC codes are a model template that States can adopt as their law. The adopting State can modify these templates to fit their States requirements. CT's IRC will be slightly different from NY's IRC because each State can modify their Code. The issue here is that if a State feels they do not want to mandate Residential Sprinkler Systems they can delete or modify this section to their liking. This is where we, as the Fire Service, need to be involved at the State level and make sure that these requirements are not modified out. During the testimony prior to the voting at the ICC many opponents stated that Residential Sprinkler Systems were already part of the current IRC. The problem was that this requirement was in the appendix, which meant that if you wanted a Sprinkler System this is how to do it, just that as an appendix it was not mandatory. For additional information from the ICC Convention click here. eckyphats - the "Government" will only require you to install a Sprinkler System if you build a NEW one or two family dwelling or townhome. "but what gives the government the right to tell me that I HAVE to have a sprinkler system in my PRIVATE home." This Code, if adopted, by your State gives your State the same right to require a Residential Sprinkler System (in your NEW construction) home as they have now to require Smoke Detectors, Stair Railings, GFCI/AFCI electrical outlets and almost every other feature of Residential Structures.

For those of us who are fans of A&E TV's Parking Wars the new season starts tonight at 10PM!! If you haven't seen it, it is definately a hoot. Who thought the trials and tribulations of ticket writers, tow truck operators, and the impound lot could be worthy of a TV show. CHECK IT OUT.

Unless something has changed since the System was designed, Police agencies will not be using the System. All County Police agencies (including County PD, NYSP, EnCon, City, Town & Village) have a trunked radio base in their HQ. The System was designed with the frequency capacity for only Fire, EMS and the BeeLine bus system. In order for any other agencies to possibly have access, additional frequencies would need to be added, and additional tower sites added. Right now each Zone of the System is assigned six frequency pairs. From what I have tracked not all of these freq's are being used due to possible interference to other nearby users of adjacent channels. So, the System is already operating below what it was designed for. This System was designed specifcally for Dispatch and Response purposes, not Tactical use, as PD's would use it. What this means is that it was not designed for Portable Radio usage (hence the need for additional towers for the additional "in-street" coverage that PD usage would require if they were to use the System).

They can, if the U.S. Postal Service wants to place a branch there. The USPS being a "independent establishment of the executive branch of the Government of the United States" can place branches where they want. See Wikipedia for further info. The State of NY has no say as to where they are placed. Towns with their own P.O. in Westchester - Eastchester, North Salem, Pound Ridge, Somers, Yorktown, and Cortlandt(no P.O., but has it's own zipcode based in the Peekskill P.O.).

Capt, just to clarify, the Village of Ossining contracts with the Town of Ossining for the Town's fire protection district (the Village of Briarcliff Manor also provides fire protection for another district in the Town of Ossining).
-
PVFD, Try searching the surrounding counties at RadioReference.com. Most listings provide the PL/DPL with the freq's.
-
PVFD, You may be receiving Mohegan's repeater on 453.2750MHz with a DPL of 226. See this FCC list for others on this freq in NYS.

Sq51 (5-1=4), therefore Sq51 = R4

If I recall correctly, Dobbs Ferry FD had a tiller L23 (ALF?) before they got their Mack/AerialScope TL23.

As EMTBravo Communications Advisor, and as DOC22 stated, the RadioReference.com info will work. Also see this Westchester County Fire/EMS Trunked System thread. See posts number 57, 59, 60 for specific info. There is a lot of information in this thread that you will help you to understand the system. If you still have any questions feel free to ask. Best of luck. NOTE: the info in the above thread will work the same as the info in RR.com

I just asked one of the KFD members the other day this exact question, and he said they were still looking around.

Since this thread seems to be going all over the place with anything touching the OP's topic, does anyone in the know know what the purpose of the two large intakes on/in the front bumper of the FDNY E88 are for? Would it be to meet the testing requirements for the 2000GPM certification?

Congrats Mike, keep up the good work.

Nah, that doesn't happen here, When I was the Chairman of the Apparatus Committee of my previous Company, I was told we could specify anything we wanted as long as it had a brand "E" nameplate on it.

With the anniversary of the activation of the Fire/EMS Trunked UHF System this Wednesday, September 10, I am starting this thread to post comments regarding the system. I am looking for comments on what is good, and what is bad about the system from people who have actually used the system. Let's keep this thread constructive, only the good and bad from actual users please. Thanks Steve

Several months ago I took the two garbage bags full of scrap wire I had been collecting from jobs to the scrap yard. I was expecting to get $20-$30. To my surprise the two garbage bags got me $100. Since then I am more diligent in passing up any scrap wire I find around a job site.

als I do not have an answer for you on that question. When the County provided the training and informational sessions on the System I was not asked to attend. The vast majority of the information I have provided here is from researching the web, and reading the few postings at Westchestergov.com. Some information regarding the radios can be found here. If you need this information I have asked and received answers from Chief Volk at 60 Control regarding the System. Goose The System was not designed for portable usage. It was designed for response and communications to Control (or FD HQ). The Fireground channels are what are meant for portable (on scene) operations.
-
als, I would also like to know about the Tanker Ops problem described. The hilly terrain should not have played a key in the communications of this incident. Either you have access to the nearest Tower (repeater) or you don't. The way Tanker 10eng is describing it, it is as if they were trying to use the Fireground portable channels. If they were actually using the Trunked System, and there were these problems, then there is a form that can be filed to report such problems. Without feedback about such problems, the County cannot try to correct any issues with the System.

Keep up the good work, thanks.
