  1. Without a doubt, central dispatching is the way to go. Coordination, efficientcy, and professionalism are but a few of the reasons. The multiple PSAPs in Westchester is a political issue that was resolved years ago by simply not adressing the issue. Multiple PSAPs creates a very fragile system that is fragmented and inefficient. Speaking of which....perhaps consolidation of munipalities and or police departments and or fire departments should be studied again. While New York is a home rule state, somebody needs to wake up and have the guts to adressthis issue. We all complain about property taxes but don't want to bite the bullet and do anything about. Just one man's opinion.....
  2. It was the price guys !....It was the $$$ !!!
  3. Yonkers board approves new firetruck purchase By MICHAEL GANNONmgannon@lohud.com THE JOURNAL NEWS (Original publication: February 23, 2006) YONKERS — The city yesterday exercised an option to buy a third ladder truck for the Fire Department off a $1.2 million contract approved in November. The $611,916 option with Smeal Fire Apparatus Co., which locked in the price of the first two trucks, was unanimously approved yesterday by the city's Board of Contract and Supply. It was the largest of several public safety-related expenditures approved by the board, led by Mayor Phil Amicone. The Fire Department was the main beneficiary of the board's actions, receiving nearly $50,000 in other equipment in addition to the firetrucks. The board also approved $9,920 for two Searchcam Breaching Systems — gas-powered drills and drill bits that enable firefighters to drill through different types of materials while searching for victims at building collapses and in other confined spaces — and $9,676 for search cameras used in technical rescues. "It just keeps enhancing our abilities to perform the duties we have after 9/11," Fire Commissioner Anthony Pagano said. Smeal will deliver the first two trucks by November and the third truck by early next year. The first two will be assigned to firehouses on Central Park Avenue and Radford Street, and the third will go to a firehouse on either Vark Street or Shonnard Place, Pagano said. The money will come out of the city's capital budget, which was approved late last year. Some of the other equipment is funded by federal Homeland Security grants, Pagano said. The board also approved an $89,950 bid by Choice Security Systems to patrol Untermyer Park and approved $34,552 in spending on new equipment for the Police Department, including $6,998 for new defibrillators for each police precinct.
  4. When I was in college in Kansas in the early '70's, the city that I was in used an electronic siren and audible voice alert system to warn of tornados. Take my word for it, it worked well. I believe what you are looking for is not new technology.
  5. I fell off my chair laughing at the FedEx one.
  6. Does anybody remember the Green's fire on 4th Avenue in Mt. Vernon ? I think that it was a saturday night during July of 1960 or 61. Hundreds of firefighters from Mt. Vernon, all of southern Westchester and FDNY. I remember my uncles and cousins telling me that the all service masks being used at the time was not able to filter out the toxic plastics in the smoke, SCBA's were new and there were only a few around. A half dozen ladder pipes on both the 4th and 5th Avenue sides of the building finally put the fire out over 12 hours later.
  7. The Super Pumper was amazing to see. I saw it many times on multiple alarme in The Bronx and Manhattan in the early '70's. I recall that to start the pumps, a FF had to don ear protection and set off CO2 cartridges to get it going. And then the sound....oh what a sound. Never to be heard any any other apparatus or diesel engine in the world. Bad part....the LDH on the satellites and tender were not light weight. Was a challenge to re-pack.
  8. Lake Carmel's old 17-2-3 was Ford 8000 chasis (i think) with body by Salusbury and front mounted pump. An absolute gem to pump. Caught a draft right away.
  9. Well said 415...and,.....in addition to putting the truck back into service....how about putting the 6th engine back into service too !

  20. I second the motion...The Journal News stinks ! I agrree that the new format is cluttered and difficult to read. I live in Putnam and really don't care if somebody was arrested in Mamaroneck for littering. Take note of the slogan being used below the mast head "Serving the Lower Hidson Valley Since 1850.' They also use the same "Lower Hudson Valley" term in news articles and in their "LoHud" web site. Take note that "The Poughkeepsie Journal" is a Gannett Newspaper also. Mark my word.....pretty soon the good citizens in Mt. Vernon will be reading about the litterbugs in Poughkeepsie !!
  21. I'm going to assume that you are a PO in Greenwich...hence your response to my post. I was in one of the first waves of civilian police/fire dispatchers for a large Westchester County police agency in the 70's. It was initially a battle with the uniforms and, in particular, the PBA. I proved myself to the point that the radio cars looked forward to working with us. It took a number of years and an understanding of what each other's job was, but it works. You will, however, encounter some complete idiots who try to do the job. But that goes for all jobs. The bosses have to weed them out and build upon the success of the good ones. Give it time....it WILL work.
  22. It's about time ! Welcome to the 20th....ah...I mean 21st century !!! With the proper training, civilian police and/or fire dispatchers are just fine. Get over it already !!!
  23. The problem is overdevelopment in the upper Saw Mill River basin forcing increased runoff into the small and shallow stream. Local officials protest when solutions are proposed. In the case of the 1993 proposal from NYSDOT, which included the replacement of both the Bedford Rd. and Manville Rd. bridges, the locals suggested that the existing bridges were of historic architectural significance and, hence, rejected the proposal. And time marches on.......and the river, and parkway, continues to flood.
