  1. Actually, they have 5 active stations. Two stations (Robertson Ave. and South Lexington Ave.) house spare or auxilary apparatus and are not manned.
  2. Oh how I loved being the "horsepower" in the manual pump competition at the Kensico muster. I long for those June days.
  3. In a word....."NO ! Switched to Verizon wireless about a year ago....imported my number from NEXTEL.....and I have lived happily ever after !!!
  4. Oh God ! Now instead of moving people I'm gonna be turning light bulbs on. While the MTA has a bunch of CNG buses, they have many more hybrids and have several hundred on order from Dalimer Buses. Bee-Line currently has only 4 with more to come.
  5. Do I read the roster of front line Newark FD apparatus to be 17 engines, 9 ladders and 1 heavy rescue ?
  6. FDNY experimented with the concept before it was called a quint. Back in the mid-70's, during the NYC financial crisis, a few engine and ladder companies that were historically slow, were combined and the "combo" unit was born. The one that I remember was on City Island when E-70 and Ladder-53 were put together and, hence, the manpower was reduced. The rig, on a Mack CF chasis with a 2-speed automatic transmission, had a 50 foot light duty aerial mounted within what would normally be the hose bed. There was a pre-piped ladder pipe with a remote controlled fog-hog nozzle. It carried no more ladders than a typical engine (14' roof ladder and a 24' extension). The rig was removed from service in the mid-80's and was subsequently sold to the Lake Carmel FD who performed a minor refurb on it and experimented with the ladder concept for a few years before selling it. The quint, while an interesting concept, is, in reality, nothing more than a device to save on manpower. In a carear department, less is bad. In a volunteer department with hydrants, its a way to get the first rig with multiple capabilities (albeit no very good capabilities) out the door with, hopefully, more rigs to follow. JBE might be able to supply more info on the FDNY combo units.
  7. Chelsea Fire Kills 5 Family Members NEW YORK (AP) -- An early morning blaze trapped a family in their Manhattan apartment Saturday, killing two adults and three young children who took refuge from the smoke in a bathtub and a back bedroom, fire officials said. 8. In the old days we used to have the dictaphone belts for recording telephone calls. God how I used to have to change the belts and then try to play the call back. .....and do you remember the telephones (949-8883/84) that were attached to the desk and had the flshing light when they rang ? #529 1973-1983.
  9. While tank size is crucial, the ability to get in, dump, run, fill and return is just as important. When I was chazirman of our truck committee to purchase a new tanker back in the '90's, we detrmined that a 2,500 gallon tanker with a powerful engine a rated pump with a folding tank equal to tyhe tank size would serve us well. It was NFPA compliant and.....painted red ! It has worked well.
  10. That "wise man" was Benjamin Franklin.
  11. How can you possibly call an American war hero a "scumbag ?" McCain wasn't born into millions. His father and grandfather were both naval admirals. His "wealth" is his wife's. She is not an heir to the Anheuser-Busch family. Her family owns a beer distribtorship in Arizona. McCain was shot down over North Vietnam and endurred years of torture at the hands of his North Vietnamese jailers. When offered the opportunity to be released, he declined preferring, instead, to remain with his fellow POW's. Read McCain's former #1 NY Times best seller "Faith of Our Fathers." Perhaps if you read a few chapters you might understand the man better. ......and give me abreak about the houses that he owns. Most holders of real estate don't have any idea what the particulars are of their holdinmgs. You may or may not like politicans....you may or may not like or even vote for John McCain. But know your facts before you make an assinine statement !
