I can see that. I grew up in PC. I have very good friends both volunteer and career. Im sorry it's come down to this. I'd like to meet everyone at the old Terry Lodge for drinks and food like the old times.

Never let a few bad apples, whether career or volunteer, spoil the entire barrel because to the core in our hearts we are all there to help those during their time of need.

Of course I find this unbelievable of how a place like Port Chester, NY could eliminate its skeleton crew of firefighters. I find this very hard to believe because in this day and age, we all know it is a national trend that the volunteer fire service is NOT attracting the numbers like it used to. That is a sad fact, but with todays economy that is a fact of reality.

I live in the eastern half of Connecticut. It is an area of mostly rural towns but with two or three smaller cities. Many of those surrounding towns have been forced to hire some type of fire fighters due to the fact that those volunteer numbers are dwindling. Just within the last ten years, the following rural towns have been forced to hire some type of career fire staffing:
     1) Montville
     2) Waterford
     3) Colchester
     4) Voluntown
     5) Canterbury
     6) Preston

In some cases, they have been forced to hire MORE than just one driver. Preston hired three, Colchester is up to five (I believe). Montville and Waterford has added evening shifts. Within the area are two casinos (Foxwoods and Mohegan) as well as the U.S. Federal Sub Base Fire Department who have their own staffed fire departments that also are used to protect these surrounding areas.

More towards the middle of the state, the smaller Town of Portland, Ct has contracted with the staffed City of Middletown to provide one engine company on a routine basis for fire emergencies.

Apparently all of the above realize how important it is to provide some type of fire protection for their areas. Is it a fully staffed fire department ? Of course not. In some cases the fact remains these are only skeleton crews and there is still a much needed force of a volunteer system of firefighting.

But for a fire district or town to take a step backwards like this is putting its citizens at a greater risk. I would think that would be a liability issue for this district should a serious event occur. I am reminded of a very serious fire that took the lives of 24 young victims the night of June 30, 1974 at a place called "Gullivers" right here in Port Chester, NY. One of the worst fires in our nations history. Apparently that is all forgotten about now.

A heroic job by the first arriving White Plains PD Officers and FD on rescuing two victims from this fire. Sadly, a baby died in this fire after being rescued and transported to the hospital.

I am glad I could capture the heroism and compassion of the White Plains Police and Fire Departments in this situation.

I arrived shortly after the first line was stretched. I'm sorry for the crappy photo quality, I was actually in the area experimenting with and learning a new lens

I'll soap box a little further....the confederate flag is a flag of treason. Today, we'd probably have branded them terrorists.
Today, the founding fathers of this country would be branded terrorists.

So I was headed to see my friend graduate from HFD Academy and start her career at HFD, when down the road from the academy I spotted this. I would've nabbed more pictures but I was running behind. Turns out that whole garage has a load of Classic trucks inside.

This discussion, and this website, will often include conversations about operations and tactics. If we can't critique (constructively) operations of our own, or other departments, we'll learn nothing.
Emergency operations from New York City to Peoria deserve analysis and critique. No event is without mistake or action that could be evaluated after the fact. What are we supposed to say? The fire went out, great job guys?
For my own part of this discussion; I was not there, I did not take part. That limits my ability to comment, but photos and resources called raised some points for discussion. I for one will ALMOST never question the request for additional resources. Call more than ya need and send'em home if you find your self in better position to manage the incident with units on scene. At this particular fire, it looks as though the first due department was faced with several adverse conditions and they summoned more resources to overcome them. Fine. I did question the need for members to be operating on a peaked roof, covered in snow, to facilitate vertical ventilation. Vert. Venting is not always particularly beneficial in a PD and the risk of putting members on the roof seems unnecessary. In my dept., peaked roof ventilation is accomplished from the bucket of a tower ladder while the member is belted in. Clearly there is decades of operational experience that calls for such caution. Chainsaws, additionally, are THE. MOST. DANGEROUS. TOOL. we use.
I hope this discussion continues with focus on an, over-all, job well done. However,we can all improve and this is how.
**Discussions on staffing, consolidation and general resources is one that needs a great deal more attention than it's getting, but lets focus here on a single operation, it's merit's and detraction's, and not something fundamental that effects the whole fire service.

what do you use for supply lines?
  19. 210 liked a post in a topic by SageVigiles in Hose Set-Ups
Sorry that was a typo on my part, that was supposed to say 1600' of 3" supply line. Corrected.
We pretty much exclusively use 3" or 4" (our Engine has 4" line, but is currently out for a refurb that will change our hose loads, so I didn't include it in this post) We also have short shots of 5" soft supply line if we are right next to a hydrant.

Quite the variations and set up on that pump. 400' of 1 3/4 seems like a loooooonnnng stretch. PDP must be up there, depending on what that fog nozzle needs. Why not reduce friction loss by using a 100 2 1/2 leader line?
    Anyway...
    My engine in Derry, NH.
    1000 gallon tank.
    1000' of 4".
600 feet of flat loaded 2 1/2 with a wye at the end for our occasional long stretches.
100' 1 3/4 in a bundle with breakaway fog/smooth bore nozzle and a 50' donut roll. Called our high rise pack, used to attach to the of the 2 1/2 listed above.
200' 2 1/2 flat load off the rear with TFT fog nozzle.
200' 1 3/4 flat load off the rear with TFT fog nozzle.
Two 1 3/4 200' crosslays, one with solid bore, one with TFT fog nozzle.
200' 2 1/2 crosslay with TFT fog nozzle.
That's it folks. As with most places, our hose loads are revised like our SOGs, and can take a while to have change.
Nice thing about our lays is that they give us flexibility, and they are built around OUR buildings. There is ONE garden style apt that we can't hit with the 200' crosslay. Our building mix is mostly single or two family residential, and then a bunch of apartments.

First off... love this topic, love hydraulics when it comes to GPM, NP, NR.
    I see Morningside,MD engine "off the rear" has a 400' 1 3/4" preconnected with a fog nozzle.
Just curious... what kind of pump pressure do you pump, to get the correct nozzle pressure (fog nozzle) on that long lay or on a third/forth floor fire with that small line ???
I have been told by smarter people then me, NO more then six lengths on the 1 3/4 hand line.
  22. 210 liked a post in a topic by M' Ave in Hose Set-Ups
Good question......you'd need 160 psi, just to overcome friction loss. Add the 70 +/- psi at the nozzle and you've got the engine screaming and you're only going 400'
Our bed has 2 loads that lead with 1 1/4". They're both 6 lengths of 1 1/4" over 10 lengths of 2 1/2". Some places will use fewer lengths of 1 3/4" and more 2 1/2", but always 16 lengths. With our standard 15/16" smooth bore tip, we'll need a minimum of 220psi at the panel to achieve the flow we want. That leaves you 30psi to account for additional elevation (higher floors). 250psi is the limit without authorization and a lot of safety procedures....

Why is asking questions perceived as bashing? You can learn from asking questions so why isn't that encouraged especially when run numbers are so low and actual experience may be lacking.

I don't think many of the discussions were "bashing" or "career vs. volunteer". If someone has a different opinion it doesn't mean they're bashing yours. It means they have a different opinion.

There used to be some great insightful discussions here but now they're few and far between!

Very true when the clean house happened many people left after hearing some of the "rumors" as to why. Also agree you post a harmless incident and then the bashing started. So no one wanted to post even a incident anymore. Why would you want to when it came to bashing. And yes one of my last post was in reference to tech rescue and a volly vs career dept response. I don't think I was bashing. More like I would go with 1 over the other because it makes sense.

Who wants to sit here and have a pissing match with people about the same stuff over and over again. Im currently pursing my masters in a specialty aspect of medicine and the forum I am on is amazing...why ? Because we push each other to try different things and we can ask for and get amazing advice from the 11,000 or so members instead of it getting derailed by someone with a piss poor attitude. Everyone that is in this particular specialty loves their job and we are always trying to find new and better ways to do it. Do we disagree on certain things, well yea. Not everyone is going to like what you say, but there is an exceptional level of professionalism on that forum that isn't anywhere to be seen here.
Unfortunately, here it's always the same stuff and the same people with the same crappy attitudes, who wants to deal with that ? Not me. It's sad to see this site become a shadow of its former self.
