Millwood firefighters sue in clash over election By ELIZABETH GANGA eganga@lohud.com THE JOURNAL NEWS (Original publication: May 19, 2006) MILLWOOD — The organization representing the volunteers in the Millwood Fire Department is suing the fire district's governing body to try to force approval of the volunteers' choice for second assistant fire chief. On April 6, the firefighters elected Walter Quast as second assistant chief by better than 2-to-1 over the other candidate, Ray Lips, in this year's only contested election for line officers, said Richard Scanlan, the fire company's treasurer. But on April 24, the fire commissioners, which govern the district, rejected Quast's election. Three commissioners voted against Quast and two abstained. The commissioners asked for a new nomination, and although the fire company nominated another person on a temporary basis, it challenged the commissioners' decision in state Supreme Court in White Plains on May 12. Scanlan said this was the first time in his more than 30 years of volunteering with the department that a fire officer wasn't approved by the commissioners. Moreover, he said, the district's bylaws require approval by the fire officers unless the nominee doesn't meet certain qualifications. Quast is a former chief and a dedicated volunteer familiar with the newest apparatus, Scanlan said. "He'd get up at 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning and lug hose," Scanlan said. The vast majority of the volunteers approved the lawsuit, he said. Quast couldn't be reached for comment yesterday. Anthony Olenik, chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners, said he couldn't comment because of the legal action. Commissioner Angelo Indusi, who abstained in the vote against Quast along with Commissioner Fred Scheier, also said he couldn't comment. The lawsuit adds another layer of contention to the Millwood Fire Department, which is struggling with controversy over the district's proposal to build a new firehouse. The fire district covers the western end of New Castle.

Guys Take it Easy, I agree with enjoying ourselves and also enjoy "Jersey Style" Wetdowns. But....he also kinda has a point. I Love a GOOD Wetdown but entitled to an opioion.

Wasn't able to take in this one, but was at the Rutherford Rescue wetdown a few years back and the Special Services unit wetdown aswell also at the same Office Complex. Was a perfect spot, but also have to keep in mind that permission to use the property is easier for them, I don't know about up here (Beverage Serving) a topic. But yes, very disappointed I couldn't make it.

Thanks for the Info

ok, another question. Its not required to be equipped with one to be classified as a Class "A" Engine is it? I don't believe so but just checking.

Issue is that I see is that the Public also doesn't understand why the photo's are taken. As a Scene photographer I am faced with even Law Enforcement Officers from Towns that in which I take photo's for the FD's give u a hard time and people look at u like your sick. One of the Reason's is Insurance adjustors and Fire Insurance people that run to the scene of an Incident and try to make money off of it. I saw this at one of my departments recent fires. If u are wearing Apparel that displays u are with an Emergency agency like a Turn-out Coat or Bunker pants I just wish people would use common sense and understand its for a purpose.
-
I was just wondering, who's department has and carries Class D Extinguishers? I have heard a few times over the past couple of years of actual mutal aid Calls for one. I wouldn't mind seeing one on my Engine, am trying to see if that could hopefully soon be a reality.

Very True, good point

Second that?

Being around the Fire Service for a good portion of my life i can definitly say its a popularity contest in certain places. Being a Younger member and growing up around it gave me a old school outlook on things aswell as far as learning, and Senority. Another good saying is that its "Just his turn" or "Time" . Sometimes I guess people don't understand that s*** flows up and down hill. That Officers have a Responsability that they are obligated to uphold. Definitly agree with firecapt.32 " your not the Elks Club with a Fire Truck". Granted that with the Volunteer Service that it is "Volunteer" but it doesn't mean that u treat it any less due to this. Discipline is an aspect in some departments that just isn't there, aswell as common knowledge. U are also there to do a Job and not be everyone's Best Friend.

Yes the Dial-up activates the House Sirens for the Individual companies and the (Box alarm) air Whistles (Minor and General) . Actual tones havn't changed.

There are drivers within blocks of the New Planned Station, Ossining already has 9 Companies 2 in which are Truck companies, It will improve response times to the 3 Condo Complex Communities on the Edge of there District and the Rest of the area in which they cover. Also giving them direct Access to Rt. 9A north and south bound.

Would be great, Westchester has had there fare share of Replica's (which is good) I think they should also look west over the Tapp. Alot of goregous rigs over there.

capt.415 Posted Today, 09:16 PM Just remember guys, those graphics don't mean a thing if the apparatus is sitting in the repair shop most of the time. Just because it looks pretty doesn't mean it can do the job. One I took, I have a few others, A Seagrave, Black over-Red=Love capt.415 completely agree with u on that but to me another subject, Looks and Operational stand-point are both extremely priority to me.
-
Also am a fan of Slogans, and Chevron Stripping in the Rear. Another Example
-
Tough Topic for Apparatus Buffs. Personally I am a Tradionalist, I like Gold Leaf/ Silver Leaf and alot of it (not overkill) but adequate. Also the Refective stripping has to go with the graphics and appreance and not just thrown on looking. Also am a fan of door Emblems and Murals but like to see the Apparatus ID on the Rear Door BIG (Wether in Leaf or Sticker).
-
Would Also have to go with Outriggers, but most commonly heard on the Fireground is 'JACKS'. To be honest is there really an actual title to each different style, I would figure so but really don't know the Different ID.
