I'm enjoying seeing the progress of the new engine - it looks like it has been very well spec'd for your needs. One question - the new engine is replacing the 1997 and 1989 engines; are you going to run a single engine only going forward?

    Brothers and Sisters,
I previously was a volunteer up in northern Westchester (YHFD) And now live in Central Oregon and a member of Cloverdale Rural Fire District. Our current 2 front line engines are 1986 Pierce pumpers, which are way out of NFPA safety standards,. Our Board of Commissioner s are not helping the matter, we are fighting to get.a.tax levy this November. I am leading the fire fighters association in getting a pumper donated or us buying our own rig to lease to the district.
With that said I ask my colleagues back home for help. We do have cash reserves avavailable if purchasing, or perhaps a donation? So if your department is getting rid of a enclosed cab pumper please contact me.

I will keep my reasponse short, so not to open Pandoras box.
Overall parades are good for the kids and public, and post parade activities can prove great for a single guy or somebody whose wife is not in town... But parades have the possibility of a good social event with good public relations.
Drinking at parades? Sure why the hell not as long as we wear out big boy pants, and are smart about it. Not for nothing but, march in NYC in uniform and tell me you don't drink after! Or before for that matter.
But what ever you do, don't get in any pictures that will screw you.

Well you can check out 911hotjobs.com or search on indeed.com. and enter firefighter in the search bar. There are currently many fire depts hiring out here on the left coast in Oregon and Washington. I can tell you Aisters-Camp Sherman fire district is seeking to fill a FF/medic as is Salem OR and I believe Portland is testing in 2014, also Salt Lake UT if I am not mistaken.
Just a FYI a lot of the Depts here in central Oregon have student-resident programs for college students and they pay a stipend on monthly basis in addition to tuition assistance. If your college age or close to it I highly recommend this program they usually get preference in the hiring process.

Any job that all the members walk away and go home safely at the end of the day is a great job.

There are several other alphabet agencies that operate in NY/NJ , having previously served on one I have worked with agencies that use rental cars even. But I will say 99% of the vehicles that the Govt owned had GSA plates no markings but GSA plates or state official plates.
Other interesting point, the unit I was assigned to worked out of a previously owned Government building which people drive by every day and think it is abandoned. Another unit we worked with had their rigs/vehicles in a plain no frills aluminum garage.

In my opinion, just a opinion which may not be popular is that our PPE is now too good. (If that makes sense)Let me explain, I feel that now our bunker gear is amazing but at the same time it is letting us get further in to what may be a bad situation. With the new materials and what not yes we are safer, but more in danger ie/ getting into such a hot area that our SCBA masks fail. Now I have not witnessed this, but there are reports. And the "New Construction" burns way faster and hotter then "legacy", and with advancements in our gear we go further then before.
So to stop me from rambling further I am not against hoods, just saying to ensure we don't get a false sense of security in the gear. One note to this yes I was doing overhaul at a job not wearing hood, pulled some overhead and had a small ember fall onto my collar of my bunker coat burned back of my neck so lesson learned the hard way.

For me I go back to YHFD, and hands down I say with great pride Martin McGannon! In my opinion he was a great chief and teacher. Not only did he encompass everything that makes one a great leader, but he was a great friend and role model. I also say Greg T., he also taught me a lot in the fire service and outside. And finally I add Kenny, I was honored to serve with such a great group.
And for my short time in Da Bronx I will most definitely say Geroge, Jimmy R, Danny B., Beefman, and a true legend D.O.C.
Finally I must say my Current Chief, Chief Olsen is very knowledgeable and very progressive yet still holds true to traditions. And my Academy Chief, Chief McLaren who is a great mentor and the Best instructor the Oregon DPSST has to offer.

So if the city wants to play it that way, I would get EVERY male and female that failed and aren't hired, file a class action discrimination case, and make the city pay.
I'm not saying these people should be hired, but they can take the city for money if they think its funny to play number games.

201/65 is correct. It's a combination of AGR aka full time guardsmen on active duty orders and guardsmen employed as NYS employees. Having been a member of the air guard in ny, I know also yes you need to be a member of the guard.
The ARFF firefighters attend training a in Texas at Shepard AFB and also get HAZMAT training and interior. They respond off the base to Newburghand surrounding areas.
The same is true at the 106th Rescue Wing (pararescue ) in West Hampton on the East End. They reaspond quite often to assist the Hamptons fire departments.

This is a rural fire district in Central Oregon, sorry for the indoor shots it's was not a good weather day. I didn't want the students to have to clean the rigs. It's a combination department with a very good resident student program.
