I hope it comes with shoe horns and a vat of Vaseline to squeeze it into HQ.  Meanwhile the fire houses are rotting away! What a waste.

Yes WCPD Marine has Side Scan Sonar. At the scene of a major incidents with fellow port partners certain tasks are assigned to certain units. WCPD Marine has members assigned 365 days a year. They are supplemted by members of ESU.

You got to remember that the County Police have many different functions. Not every guy assigned to the Marine Unit is strictly on the Marine Unit. He might be out patrolling the Hutch or out in Cortlandt Manor. Yes, with all the equipment and funding they get you wonder what their actual capabilities are. But, they are out there doing what they can at this time. Nothing wrong with that at all. Also, there is nothing wrong with contacting another agency that has specific units doing this 24/7. The NYPD SCUBA, Harbor, and Aviation Units are doing these tasks around the clock, whether it be in training or on actual calls. They also have the equipment available to them that some agencies don't. Guys assigned to those units are specifically assigned. So, it's not like they are pulling a guy out of the 44 or from Midtown South to come get on a boat or chopper. Not to mention, it builds many different connections for different municipalities, and when you're in need, it really makes the difference having those connections. And like Morningjoe mentioned, the only really capable unit that I know of that can perform these tasks in the County effectively is Yorktown Heights FD Water Rescue Unit. They were out there that morning capable of getting guys in the water and doing a side sonar scan.  And honestly, nothing wrong at all with a volunteer agency taking that initiative to be a great unit like that. I give them a lot of credit for what they got going on up there. But, you also got to remember the basics and what is behind all of this. You need commercial divers and salvage teams to get that tug out. That's not a task that a law enforcement or fire-rescue agency would conduct. Also, the initial minutes were crucial and the Tarrytown Fire Department did a great job getting out there as fast as they did and performing at the level that they did. Technology aside, it goes back to training and having the equipment available to enact a rescue effort, and those things were present that day by the first responding agencies.

Yorktown FD, which was called and utilized with their water rescue team, used their side scan sonar to try and locate the tug

It is a pathetic shame that these members have to operate using old and damaged equipment. The United States gives billions away to foreign countries many like Iran who have no use for us yet fire departments have to beg or compete for grants to get funding. And the same goes for EMS many VAC's operate with old equipment. I

There are several departments in Westchester that operate single axle Quints.
North White Plains Ladder 47, Greenville Ladder 4, Croton Falls Ladder 68 (Former Ardsley Quint 1/Ladder 50), Chappaqua FD Tower Ladder 27, Hawthorne FD Ladder 56, Katonah FD Ladder 39, Millwood FD Ladder 52, Lake Mohegan FD Ladder 10, Rye Brook Ladder 30, and Somers FD Ladder 48 are the departments in Westchester that operate single axle quints.
New Rochelle FD Ladder 12 also used to be a single axle quint, and is now in service with the WCDES Fire Training Center. Mamaroneck FD Ladder 19 also has a single rear axle, but is not a quint, as is Mount Vernon Ladder 2, Rye FD Ladder 25 and Ladder 26 and Scarsdale FD Tower Ladder 29. Pelham Manor Tower Ladder 3 also has a single rear axle Aerialscope.

The NFPA's stats tell us that Career Firefighters (30%) respond to (70%) of the fires. Sure there are exceptions but for the most part this is true. As for this study no one should be surprised who commissioned the study. When people bring up Fairfax, PG, Montgomery Co. there are a lot of differences. Fairfax and Montgomery County although they have volunteers do not rely on them to the level PG does and the career numbers have increased there. In those counties for the most part they are the only department. Would that work in NY? As the law reads we could make super districts to cover large areas and probably provided excellent fire protection but by law cities need to provide their own fire protection.

I remember back when we used to just take the test and hope for a letter. This back and forth about possible scenarios is ridiculous. If you get a letter, great, follow the instructions. If you don't get a letter, you weren't good enough. Take another test. End of story.

My department recently had 2 Chiefs go out to pre-construction on our new truck. The other one was working. They gave it to the seniormost Captain the car to use, especially since it has most of our command equipment with it and the Captain could arrive and figure out what he needs sooner.

I'm not generally a rear mount tower ladder kind of guy, but this is one nice Seagrave rear mount tower ladder, especially since it has the Aerialscope bucket. Wish Seagrave made this in a mid-mount with the full walkway ladder.
This one is serving Laurel, MD, in Prince George's County, and is a 2015 Seagrave Marauder II with a 105' Rear Mount Apollo II Tower Ladder.

Our Chiefs generally give their cars to Deputy Chiefs when they know they'll be out of service / out of town for more then 24 hours.
Chief's vehicles should be considered a department vehicle and if the person they are usually assigned to isn't going to be around (work, vacation, illness, etc.) and isn't able to do their duties, then it should be given to someone who can use it.
  19. Bottom of Da Hill liked a post in a topic by Viper in Command Vehicle When Chiefs Are Away
I'm basing this on a volunteer department with a Chief and two Assistant Chiefs, all with department issued command vehicles.
When all Chiefs are away, planned (vacation, business, work, other travel, etc) and are out of the district and unable to respond for an extended period, does the Command Vehicle get loaned to the next in line officer, such as a Captain for use while they are Acting Chief?
Our department, if the Chiefs are all away, all the Command Vehicles sit in their driveways at home or at the firehouse. I'm trying to change that so our line officers have the Command Vehicle when they need to step up to that level. Does any department have this protocol?

They should be handed down to the next officer in the line.
I won't comment on what happens where I live.

Please don't ever come to treat me or my family with that attitude. "EDP" calls can be drug related, diabetic emergencies, and even if "just" a mental illness they deserve the same level of care as anyone else.
To dismiss a call based on dispatch information is very irresponsible.
  22. Bottom of Da Hill liked a post in a topic by calhobs in Sleepy Hollow EMS Refusing To Accept Mutual Aid?
As a former member of SHAC. I remember when we would do on the average of about 5 mutal aid calls a week. We would jokingly say our motto was have ambulance, will travel. But I see now times have changed. I no longer live in the area for a while now. But to the person who said it was just an EDP. I hope to god your not a member or an EMT of a Amblance Corp, and God help us if you are an officer. That was the most disgusting and unprofessional thing to say.
