  1. According to the state DOH website CFR classes are 48-60 hours, EMT is 150-190. I'd say "waste of time" is pretty subjective. It really depends on what this person intends to do with it.
  2. While I can see this is certainly well meaning, I have to disagree. There's no reason the Chief of one of the largest FDs in the nation will ever have to pack up, much less escape a building. While it's great that he "trains just like us" there's a dozen things I'd rather have the chief of my city driving his time doing. Pushing city hall to hire enough personnel to fix our rigs, giving them money and equipment to fix them, updating our out of date equipment, better code enforcement of illegal apartments and abandoned houses and factories, and fighting attempts to close companies and reopening previously closed companies all come to mind. Yeah it's great that he took the time to suit up but a Chief has more important issues at hand that only he can do. There's plenty of Indians, be the Chief.
  3. I'm gonna take a wild guess based off the url that this was published in April 2015.
  4. Did anyone else lose it when the author suggested returning to the days "When anyone with an interest in helping could ride in an ambulance." Seriously ???
  5. I'm a little confused as to the direction this thread is going. Was the original post asking about WCDES's FAST requirement as in 60 control and working fires, or the training center and live burns? If I'm not mistaken NFPA 1403 already requires a FAST for all training fires so I'm sure the training center requires it. What I'd like to know is the 60 control policy regarding FAST. What constitutes a FAST team, and is one required by 60 for every fire, or does every department elect to call one for every fire ?
  6. What types of calls does Yonkers dispatch BC's to ? At my job our BC is only sent to structure fires, extrixations, Hazmat and any other type of call requiring a safety officer.
  7. For anyone who expects more, keep in mind this is a city with a population under 30k and more than a quarter of its residents are below the poverty line. Sure 4 engines and 2 trucks would be great, but with what money ?
  8. If you want to know how much influence these guys have google "Earl King Jr" . He got on the job despite doing time for being the getaway driver involved in the murder of a young mother and her 8 year old son .
  9. If HR told you deferring the CPAT was an option then I would imagine they'd have information regarding that and would be worth a phone call.
  10. Is this seriously an article about a car fire ?
  11. So how many guys are actually on the rigs that are in service?
  12. Best bet would be to call Peekskil HR yourself and find out for sure where you stand.
  13. If FF1's info about 50 city residences out ranking you then I wouldn't get my hopes up. Considering the city only hired 4 (correct me if I'm wrong) off the last list, getting through 50+ would be a surprise. But crazier things have happened. As far as the rest of the county goes, if you didn't score 100 I wouldn't hold my breath. Best thing to do is to work out as if your CPAT is next week, bolster your resume (EMT, volunteer, work experience etc.) and keep testing.
  14. Which municipalities are giving a test this upcoming year?
  15. I'm not very familiar with rural fire departments or PA for that matter, but this confused me: Are there many areas that receive fire protection yet pay no taxes for their fire department? How do these departments meet their budgets, simply through fund raising? Either way I don't see this affecting many home owners as I'd imagine most live in a city or fire district that pays taxes for fire protection.
  16. In these departments that self-dispatch yet regularly need to request mutual aid for basic incidents, whats the protocol? I'd imagine the dispatcher still needs to contract 60 to request mutual aid. Is this assumption incorrect? If its not, what's the point of self-dispatch if you need to contact 60 for anything of substance?
  17. I've only kept my pager at my house so I can't give exact locations but I've heard complaints from members of different agencies all over Northern Westchester and there do seem to be several pockets with spotty reception. As far as cell reception goes I've experienced lack of service in parts of Northern Westchester from the Hudson to the Connecticut border. As other members have pointed out there certainly are some areas that don't get reception.
  18. Is it really obsolete and useless? I know here in Westchester there are areas that pagers and cell phones don't get any reception. I don't know anything about this area of Delaware, but I imagine if one of the wealthiest counties in the country has areas lacking service, other areas have similar problems.
  19. That's what I got in it for. Who wants to fight fires when there's all that sweet paper work to do !
  20. I don't know enough about NY civil service law so hopefully someone can answer this. Being that they already were hired off a civil service exam, would these firefighters be able to be hired by departments in Westchester or Dutchess without being on the lists there? If not hopefully these guys are on a few lists.
  21. According to twenty-nine of the country's top nuclear scientists it will prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/09/world/29-us-scientists-praise-iran-nuclear-deal-in-letter-to-obama.html Please show me a credible article stating that the United States is actually sending $100 Billion of our own money to Iran. From actual sources I've read that money is already Iran's from oil sales, but these assests are frozen in foreign banks due to current sanctions. http://www.npr.org/sections/parallels/2015/07/16/423562391/lifting-sanctions-will-release-100-billion-to-iran-then-what http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/06/world/middleeast/conflicting-claims-cloud-irans-financial-gain-in-nuclear-deal.html?_r=0 While I can understand making the argument that sanctions shouldn't be lifted, there's a world of difference between allowing them to have their own money compared to us handing them a check for $100 Billion.
  22. You do understand ISIS and the current refuge crisis in Syria wouldn't exist had we not invaded Iraq and later interfered in the Syrian civil war right?
  23. Here's a link to the study http://www.larchmontgazette.com/2009WP/2009graphics/firereport.pdf To sum it up, by consolidating 10 of the southern Westchester departments and cutting down from 28 engines and 14 ladders to 19 engines and 14 ladders, all of which would now be manned by 4 firefighters. While it is true that a department like New Rochelle wouldn't see much of an increase in firefighters stationed in their city, they would have a greater number of firefighters responding to alarms as now the first due companies will be whatever is closest. An example given by the study is a structure fire in the north end of NR would now get units from Scarsdale, Eastchester and Hartsdale before units from the south end of NR as they are actually closer. Read for yourself and make your own conclusion.
  24. It was a video based exam, meaning they had to look at you to come up with your score. Right after throwing out the test because the results didn't fit what they wanted. I'll let you make your conclusion.
