I have the Gannett Newspaper from the next day and the New York Times with a picture of me treating three burn victims.Several people walked up to firefighters with 1st & 2nd degree burns and going into shock. July 27, 1994 I drove Fairview Rescue 3 to the scene.One of the newer members of the dept asked "does this happen a lot?"Well, every so often Tankers cause major fires here in Westchester.

Yes Ossining FD has dispatcher during the daytime. The alarm is re-broadcasted. The radio console is the new type ,, with only a computer touch screen and mic.

Many times the proper procedures are followed and the outcome is good. But it needs to be everytime !! The public is told over and over to call 911 at the first sign of smoke. If the caller is calm , the dispatcher should not dismiss it as really no big deal. Callers have been known to be unsure if a kitchen fire is extingushed completly. A check and advise is a huge gamble ! If a resident is calling there is a problem. A Police officer should not be put in the postion of breathing in toxic smoke because the situation was downplayed on the phone. We all know how quickly fire spreads , and every second counts....... 'When in Doubt ,,, send them out !"

Sounds like to early 1900's , when if a resident did not pay his insurance the FD let the struture burn to the ground. When a resident paid he was able to display a brass plate on the building to show responding firemen the house should be saved !
