New Ro and White Plains put a lot of planning and consideration into the safety of the high rises in their districts, However things happen and my favorite saying is " If things didn't happen that couldn't happen I would not have had a job " Despite safeguards things happen, sprinkler failures, black outs. fire pump problems, explosions, high winids and remember the former Yankee pitcher learning to fly an airplane all of these things are unexpected and are just a couple that come to mind that could negate all the best plans, That is why a prepared fire department is paramount. As 635 points out these structures exist here and both fore mentioned Departments would be hard pressed to place 30 men on the scene in a timely fashion, while the same fire in NYC would put about 164 members on the fire at it's onset, when first declared a high rise fire(1077), These building would be a tough mutual aid problem .

This building had a sad history, in 1987 a fire occurred in the compactor chute killing seven people, some jumped from as high as the 23rd floor into the street. This fire resulted in changes in high rise procedures, where the dispatchers radios or MDT"s to responding or .on scene units the apartments number that called requesting assistance and that unit must be checked out. . At this fire folks in distress where assured that the FD was on scene not knowing the fire had jumped 20 floors over them, Heavy fire load in the compactor ,coupled with a missing chute door and inadequate fireproofing around the chute.too skimpy to prevent the fire .from extending to combustibles in dwelling units abutting the wall covering the chute. The Schomberg Plaza fire in 1987 was one of the most important high rise incidents and produced many lessons learned and also a big lesson in Mitchell Llama construction

These are the same trains that pass thru some of our Hudson Valley Counties , thru the downtown of villages and West Point grounds but a dangerous feature is when the tracks are on ridges above some river towns, which could turn them into instant Pompeii"s, when this volatile liquids flow

I would apply again and start from the bottom if they agreed to time me with a calendar on the agility

With all the investigations going on by local, state ad federal investigatiors, it seems handy to me that a huge record storage structure holding perhaps damaging files should be completely consumed. A small fire was started at about 0430 was extinguished by the sprinkler system and FD responded , now perhaps at 0430 the system could not be restored. and the sprinkler system shut off .fully or in part, Now at 0600 the FD returns to a heavy involved structure the size of several football fields. I think this is more sinister then a rekindle. just my two cents

Good lesson on flushing the standpipe before hooking up, at a fire when this wasn't done, saw a Hostess Tweekie wrapper cause havoc at a standpipe operation
-
JM 15 Go with the 2 in. hose over 1 3/4 as you know often there is a pressure issue with standpipes, especially before FDC is charged, Really poor standpipe pressures can be experienced on a regular basis and especially in summer time often on relatively low floors. May I suggest that you have folds of 2 1/2 in/ hose available for that really tough job, large open commercial floor space (the dreaded acre of fire) or some wind driven spectacular. . Folks in may Departments have been using 2in for several years now and for use in this "neck of the woods" it seems well suited and realistic with present manpower,
-
Some outfits have gone to 2in. hose with 2 1/2 in coupling. Interesting concept less friction loss and no need for reducers at valve. However the most important feature is the 15/16 straight tip nozzle, it was shocking to see how many Departments had some sort of fog nozzle which required 100psi to operate correctly on standpipe lengths ( A major issue in Philly Meridian Plaza fire, when standpipe pre set reducer valves were put on wrong floors coupled with fog nozzles, thus causing a pressure disaster, as I recall three firefighters died and fire operations were stopped and the building abandoned as they were afraid this high rise would collapse into downtown Philly. Straight tip nozzles would have used the available pressure and developed some sort of fire stream, maybe not perfect but at least a stream not the dribble from the fog nozzle. Sadly, they ended up stretching 5in supply hose up something like 22 floors, could you imagine ??

Every snow storm folks run out ad buy new snow shovels, what happens over the summer to last years shovels ???????
-
The early forecast for the first week of February has some snow but the real issue is some really scary temperatures ," when the temperatures go down the aerials go up', it never fails
-
Boston can dump the snow in the same body of water, that they dumped the tea. --------If of course that isn't a violation
-
New Rochelle has several of them
-
Wonder if the pipe being worked on was part of the sprinkler system ?????

Is the construction of the burning Avalon Buildings in Jersey, similar to those in the Village of Mamaroneck and the Village of Pelham ???????

Read on Internet that NYPD has experienced problems with lug nuts removed or loosened on parked radio cars and ever parked MOS private vehicles parked near their Command. Something to watch out for.

We must have high praise for the two Con Ed workers who witnessed the shooting and pursued the perp , until he threatened them with his gun ,,they then showed responding police where..he went and what he was wearing., Police confronted him on the subway platform where the gunman shot himself. Had the Con Ed guys not taken this action the shooter could have gotten on a subway and been miles away. GOOD JOB CON EDISON

With irresponsible .propaganda continuing by those who should know better, no police officer anywhere in America is safe.

Search for the Freddy's Fashion Mart Incident December 8th 1995, you will see how the same Reverend was involved as he is today, Some may argue that it was economical and nor racial. but whatever the rhetoric was strong enough to set this guy off. If you ever have a chance to talk to some of the FDNY Harlem guys who were present, you will hear of a very trying day with a large loss of life and property as they could not take effective action due to the barricaded gun man. A portion of one of Vinny Dunn"s books talks about this tragedy.
-
Why are people so surprised this happened when you hear months of anti=police rhetoric from our elected officals, talking heads on TV and members of the Civil Rights Industry ( no longer a movement but a business),now some deranged person took all this in and took action. A similar event occurred in Harlem at Freddy's when a nut job listened to the banter ( from some of the same characters we had involved now) about white interlopers running stores in Harlem and took action and about seven people died in the hostage situation and resulting fire. When the language gets nasty and continuous on the 24 hour news cycle someone out there may go further as we just saw.

Today in New Rochelle the " I Can't Breath" rally and march was postponed. I'll tell you can't breath---Those two cops in Brooklyn

They are already showing up at the make shift memorial on the site of the assassination to be interviewed by the press. never let a tragedy go unused.
