Port Chester has had an amazing turn around in their downtown region, bars, resturants ,big box stores. rejuvenated Capital Theater, plus a multi screen movie complex. All this spells a lot of people coming to the Village, it has become a destination. Thus it is Port Chester's responsibility to protect these people not put them in peril. Remember a generation ago Port Chester suffered a huge loss of life in the Gulliver's fire, one of Westchester's worst public assembly disasters and that was when the Village had a small percentage of the gathering places they have now. With crowed venues and a depleted Fire Department another Gulliver's is lurking.

What is the story with the additional set of tormentor jacks ?

Sorry to hear Tom Sutphen passed away, he was one energetic old timer, hard to keep up with him. Always enjoyed his company.

Just to see the Super Pumper would be worth the trip. Saw it a few times in action, is the tractor trailer tender still around ?

Last wet down I went to in Larchmont was maybe in 1974 when they purchased their 75 ft. Mack aerialscope. I got home three days later. I doubt political correctness will permit a repeat of that type party.

Several years we traveled to the National Fire Academy and asked if they could develop a Chief Officers course, they needed money to do this With help of Nita Lowey we got the money and the course was developed. Being from New York it was our desire to have the course, with necessary local additions made mandatory for Career newly promoted Chief Officers. We felt it made sense as we have mandatory recruit, in-service and First Line Officers training , then it suddenly stops at Chief Officers. Our next visit was to FDNY and had the backing of the then administration to present this course at Fort Totten, as long as we could secure a continuous funding source and it would be presented similar to the FDNY Chiefs course. The dream was any newly promoted career Chief anywhere in New York State would go for a months instruction to Fort Totten, Queens and take advantage of all the experiences afforded. Sadly, it never got funded and there was resistance to it, some even wanted to make it a computer course.. It was broad enough that it could be taught in other states at academies or regionally. For the Volunteer Chiefs it could have been taught at nights or week-end in like segments over a period of time, so a guy enters as a "Baby Chief:" would have the entire Course completed by the time he reaches the top position. Few folks get any training to prepare them for this rank and their experiences are not adequate for a position so different from previous assignments . We speak so much about safety, how about the guy running "the job" knowing what he is doing. If you like this shelved idea, contact the Office of Fire Prevention and Control in Albany and/or the New York State Fire Chiefs Association, see if this can be resurrected, again this is not limited to New York State, we just felt our State would be a logical starting point as we have State mandated training for all other ranks except this one.

Besides qualifications, experience would be useful, reminds me of the old saying "Twenty five years a cowboy and never stepped in horsesh%%"

Are the Rye Police Chief and DPW head also permitted to lack professional qualifications to hold their jobs ?

Do I understand this correctly, a firefighter who resigned under Federal Gun Selling charges will be allowed to return to the Department in order to retire on a disability pension, please tell me I have this wrong.

No mention of Blue Card certified

Hope the new Mayor and Fire Commissioner work. on background checks, so as not to hire problems, Remember past actions are the best indicator of future actions. MVFD needs eleven new firefighters not eleven new problems.

I read the article and are happy for the various PD programs, but is there any thing for the Fire Service??????

His he kinfolk to the famous TMFD Tortorellas' ?????

Great work by DPW showed great bravery and intuition, however this event shows the continued danger of questionable apartments , a seemingly endless problem in the metro area. Further underlined by the anniversary of FDNY Black Sunday this week, which had illegal occupancies as the root cause of the tragedy and illustrated that illegal dwelling units are not only a danger to occupants but firefighters also.

New Rochelle Ladder 13 and Pelham Ladder 2 are much closer, with Mount Vernon's Ladder 2 not much further, but that is another conversation

Has there ever been published findings from this fire ,soon to be two years ago. Most were sickened by the radio tapes and some are still wondering what was the outcome of the probe

Terrible conduct from sworn Fire Officers, if the cop didn't have the footage, he would have had two "professionals" from another uniformed service successfully jam him up. All over a rat expired plate ticket. Hopefully Dr.Alexander does the right thing

Actually it would be good if a concerted effort could be made to get a driving simulator at Valhalla to train all firefighters. It is a rare firefighter that will not drive something in his/her career. Certainly some firefighters will be driving a rig every shift. Perhaps a combination of funding from the County, private groups and insurance carriers that write municipalities, as theymight be interested in knocking down their exposure

It always interested me how White Plains FD was able to avoid taking an active role in EMS as all the other local cities and most combo Departments are all in on first response.

The secret to making a tiller man look good is a considerate driver up front, Sane speed, wide turns and backing up coordination. It is always a good idea that the driver brings the tiller man along on the run. Many a good firehouse story revolved around this oversight not to mention rows of parked cars that were customized.

The new MVFD Commissioner will be the greatest guy, till the first time he has to say no.

Past performance is one of the most important indicator of future performance.

Good luck with the new rig, just wondering why the Greenburgh area Departments continue using 4inch hose rather then 5inch LDH. Realizing of course they were pioneers in the LDH conversion

That section of Palmer Avenue from Chatsworth Avenue to the Movie Theater was probably one of the most burnt down blocks in America beginning in the sixties and into the early eighties.
