  1. Yes, another unfortunate and untimely death for Putnam. While everyone is still in mourning for Matt Lamb, they will now also mourn the loss of Chief Burris. What a shame.
  2. When in Orange County on State Route 17 between Chester & Middletown, be on the look out for 2F89. He is a Highway Task Force Unit or whatever they call it and he writes more tickets than anyone will ever know. He has even stopped FD & EMS vehicles for speeding.
  3. ALSO, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE USMC! SEMPER FI! HOO RAH!!!!!
  4. THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR ARMED FORCES! YOU ARE THE ONES THAT DEFEND OUR FREEDOM!!!!!!!!
  5. Alsfirefighter, Do you have a copy of a policy you can send me regarding the hemostatic agents? I want to come up with a good comprehensive policy to bring to our medical director. Thanks.
  6. Seth, I agree 100% with what you said. I did many overnight shifts at Empress back in the day and I can tell you that I am lucky. Why do I say that I am lucky?......because time and time again I fell asleep at the wheel while driving home. I woke up to being in the oncoming lane, going head on with a snowplow, on an Easter Sunday I fell asleep at the while, my foot came off the gas and my car came to a complete stop........in the middle lane of the NYS T-way! It got to the point where used to drive half way home, pull off into a rest area, sleep for about 30 min and drive the rest of the way home.

  9. I wish all the new rescue medics the best of luck with their new duties. Be safe out there.
  10. We just had a Tactical EMS Awareness Course at my VAC on Sunday. If was a precursor to the full 40 hour Tactical Medic class given by the NYTEMSA. Below are a few links for upcoming classes: http://www.blackwaterusa.com/images/pdf/Ta...ncy%20Medic.pdf http://www.ccems.com/catt_team/ http://nytemsa.org/
  11. I am looking to see how many EMS agencies have turnout gear for their members. Do you have coats and helmets on the bus or do you issue sets to your members? Do you have pants or just coats? What about helmets? What make/modle? What brand do you use? What is the color of the gear? It is nylon EMS gear or is it more like USAR or Extrication jumpsuits?
  12. NICE LOOKING BUS! Lifeline makes a nice rig. I am a Horton man myself, but Lifeline is in the top 5. PS WHEELED COACH IS JUNK!
  13. NYMedic37, When operating in and around a vehicle there are many hazards that can cause serious injuries or death. When the FD is on the scene, they must wear full turnout gear. In very hot weather there is some discretion that is used by the crew.
  14. It is funny that intercourse FD is in the heart of Amish Country. The most pure people having an un-pure name for their FD. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  15. I received a grant a few years ago for the purchase of EMS turnout gear for my VAC. I looked at many different turn out gear vendors. So of them used cheap nylon material which I did not like because it would not hold up again sharp metal, broken glass and other dangerous materials found at MVAs. We ended up going with Morning Pride USAR turnout gear. We were able to purchase 22 sets of full USAR gear. We purchased blue (white for officers) metro style helmets with the goggles, coats, pants, boots and extrication gloves. Our policy is that the turnout gear must be worn at ALL MVAs. We like the Morning Pride USAR gear, but we are now looking at going with FireDex USAR gear.

  17. This is my take on calling 911 and being asked all of the EMD questions. I will give you the side of being an EMT and the side of being a dispatcher. As an EMT, if and when I call 911 one of the first things I do is tell the calltaker who I am as well as what certification I hold. I make the request for whatever service I need i.e. "My wife is having an allergic reaction and I need an ambulance to my location ASAP". I know what treatment I have to provide to my wife until the bus arrives at my house. I will not stay on the phone to listen to EMD instructions, but these instructions are not needed. If the dispatcher was trying to keep me on the phone, I would again repeat myself, ask if there was a bus on the way and hang up the phone. I can understand why the FF said what he said. I sympathize with him. When I am at work and I am dispatching and someone calls me for a bus and they identify themselves with their name and certification. I will tone out the bus, let the caller know that the bus is enroute and then I will end the call. I am not going to stay on the phone and tell someone who can provide better patient care than I can tell them to do over the phone.
  18. My heart goes out to everyone who has family out in Cali. It is a very terrible situation. Houses and property can be replaced, but lives cannot. Thank God all of your family members are still with you. I hope that FEMA steps in and helps everyone out who lost everything.
  19. This is not directly related to the Trooper Exam, but while I was at the Vital Signs Conference this past weekend I saw a trooper at the NYSP Booth wearing black tactical pants and a black polo shirts that had the NYS seal with "New York State Police EMT" around it. I was told my an anonymous source that the SP is looking to get pretty involved in EMS. There has been "some talk" about NYSP sending their own guys to get certified as Paramedics and staffing the LifeGuard Choppers instead of Paramedics from commercial services supplying the medics. Kind of how the State of Maryland does it. PS My source is VERY reliable!!
  20. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON IN THE VOLUNTEER FIRE SERVICE!!!!???? Arson, shooting a fellow firefighter along with a DWI arrest and a city council permitting firefighters drink beer in firehouses after they return from a job! I have been a volunteer firefighter for 17 years and I have seen and heard some crazy things, but things are seriously getting way out of hand!!!!!
  21. That is when you pick up the phone and dial your FD emergency number and make an anonymous report of whatever you hear PD going to! LOL!
  22. Check out the website below. I thought I was hearing things a few days ago when I heard something about Sirius offering TV service for vehicles. They only have 3 TV stations so far, but I have a feeling that this is really going to take off! I have said time and time again that it is just a matter of time before XM & Sirius make TV available. DirecTV has had systems available for vehicles for a while, but it required a HUGE receiver antenna that was the size of the roof of your car. http://www.sirius.com/backseattv
