One of the times deadly force in NYS is acceptable.

Capt Ellson was really a gentleman. I met him back in 2002 at a fire bell club meeting. Never once did you ever get the impression that he was better than anyone. We had a few chats and it was nice to speak to someone who did a lot of time on the job, although you would have never known it.
-
It used to mean that the state recognized the National Registry as meeting the same requirements as their own. I think that its probably more in line with NYS now that they have adopted DOT standards.

After 9.11 a few rigs were purchased post haste as one would expect. I think this was one of them. I asked the retired senior man of R2 if he was interested in it, Ill see what he says. I know if this was in his firehouse he def drove it.

Try and find that on a modern continuous rail diesel sporting fuel pressure at greater than 20k psi. We are a long way from mechanical injection pumps. especially when you add in new fuel that is amazingly clean burning. Just remember what I said. Diesel will start to get to the point at which it burns at around 144 degrees the exhaust is hot enough for it to burn at that temp yet not high enough for it to burn completely. Ever see a dpf rig in a regen mode? 8-900 degrees at the tip!
-
Actually the dpf clogs from not getting hot enough not fron wet fuel but from unburned fuel as particles making it clog. Remember diesel burns above 141 degrees and if you ever drove a truck with an egt sensor you would see even at idle its at 200 degrees.
-
I know the DPF's were clogging and in many cases causing the valves to melt. Diesels are not meant to idle, main reason why Columbia Pres has all Gas rigs. You can high idle a diesel, but a diesel under no load for long periods of time causes many problems.

I don't think your analogy for the safe travels of an aircraft in most cases traveling faster than 400mph with anywhere from 10 to 500 lives on board compares to a guy inputing information from someone who is at a minimum excited. ATC has numerous layers it is not just landing planes and getting clearance to take off. Dispatchers need the right attitude. Attitude means demeanor, and capability to collect and disseminate information as rapidly as possible. The people who hire said dispatchers should continually evaluate these members for skill level and competency. But if you think someone answering a phone deserves a 100k you are headed to the land of Apu answering your 911 call.
-
While dispatchers do an excellent job in most cases, I do not see the relationship between someone who answers a phone and someone who gets stabbed, or punched, or hit by a car, or SHOT! They deserve a living wage that is for sure!

Screw the IAFF, all they want is money. Second, any man who willingly volunteers in a combination dept is a real POS. I plan on discovering this guy, how did you find out he works in NYC? If he was wearing a shirt he is a complete moron. I hope his mommy and daddy still have the NYS address for him to use. I bet he has an IAFF sticker of a UFA sticker on his car too.

If you have guys not wearing masks the issues are probably being fed from the top, monkey see monkey do. I wear mine till the smoke is gone. Sometimes it's hard to continue use when overhauling cause it really taxes your system, but all that is needed is a trip to Sloan and see some of the people leaving and that changes your perspective. And as for safety officers, nine times out of ten they have no clue nor do they remember what it's like to be in the trenches with the men, they just operate on all the nonsense they read from nfpa.

South Bronx legend from 29 truck. Rest easy brother!

I hit enter too soon. Also how do your responders respond? to the scene? the firehouse? I totally agree with you on altering response, but drivers need to realize that a) the streets we drive on are in most cases engineered to facilitate drainage and usually have a heavy crown or camber to one side, are narrow, usually have a shoulder and not a curb to change your direction, and have people traveling at rates of speed that usually exceed our warning capacity or are highly distracted. Also not many drive a staight truck with a weight of anywhere from 20-40 tons on a daily basis, and at high rates of speed. I tell all the kids when they get on the rig, seat belts, no one wants to get killed for free!

Being that youre from putnam I can relate. Our dispatch information is limited at best. How we can get someone sitting in front of a computer that can only give cross streets that the CAD presents is beyond me, yet I am forced to look at CADPAGE's link to google maps on my cell phone while driving but thats another story. Someone posted a great list. But the only thing in NYC that your respond to with out lights is for a complaint or water leak. Some guys say you use lights for elevators some say no. We get the first due engine and truck lights on any run. Don't use NYC as an example. Most companies are 4 minutes from their first due assignments, not very similar to Carmel, or cupcake NY. Anything that you think should wait should make the list. CO no symptoms, water leaks, PDAA is a good one, but then again you have to teach guys they need to use lights on highways regardless of condition being responded to so people are aware of you and your members.

I have still yet to find one incidence of injury caused by a faulty helmet. How many of you knew that a motorcycle helmet should be disposed of after it falls from more than a few feet? How many times have you dropped your helmet at work? Our necks are not designed to absorb impact, not at all, so it doesn't matter what kind of shell, or what kind of suspension you have, none of it will do a lick of good if you are wearing a helmet. Our helmet was designed to keep water off our necks, and heat off our scalp. Only in the 80's did the introduction of an impact cap inside the leather helmets start the transition to this standard we have today. Anything short of a iron beam coming down directly on a leather helmet which your least worry would be an intrusion of the iron in to your skull, but the severe impact to your skull and spine. This is just another hole in the traditions of the greatest job in the world. Pretty soon it will be salad bowls for everyone (helmets worn in california.)

Or a lorusso meal, with you getting stuck with his 12x!

Nothing like a 19 dollar piece of grilled chicken right Marc lol

Ostracized cause he is a real loser, nothing to do with his dietary consumption.

Am I reading the emails from the pcbes correctly, that they are looking for fire police to direct traffic for nyseg? If so that is complete horse crap! Our volunteers should never be used for any corporate entity, especially one that likes to run bare bones operations till its too late. Pay these guys 30 an hour and ot after 8 hours like everyone else gets.
-
Spoke to someone, apparently the new coordinator is unfamiliar with the way things should work, like not asking guys who work for FREE to work for a corporation that is in business to make MONEY. The issue is that everyone must work together, but when you have guys working for free and guys getting 40 an hour is it fair to the guy who is their for free?
-
How are you going to compare directing traffic to providing a service? Of course you can quantify the level of service and what would people be willing to pay for each level, i.e. a 4 minute response time to a 10 minute one. But you can not put the basic needs of a corporation at any of the same level as us. I know of a lot of FD's that if they were volunteer they would be better off and some vice versa, that wasn't the issue. The issue is generating more exposure for risk of injury and a lack of service if it were needed because they wanted to save some bucks!
-
Does NYSEG give you a break on your utility bill when you are out of power off your basic service charge? Why should a job that is usually done by paid and trained individuals be done by our fellow volunteers for free? Everyone is going to be getting some kind of disaster money, but the unlucky members who happen to respond to this. You can't compare this to going to long island to help staff FD's who have members who are living in hotels and family members. This is purely some manager trying to save money. And when was the last time you ever had NYSEG send you a 6ft hero or anything for the constant help we give them? So they give us 'free' classes, its to their advantage cause if they don't they assume liability. I have been away and have not been able to follow this, but still, how would you feel if you were an out of work laborer who was certified to handle traffic duties? Probably be pretty upset!
-
For everyone going, bring work gloves, boots and water and food, don't rely on it being there. Take as many shovels as you can and n95 masks and halligans, don't just go to say you were there. Help out rip some sheet rock, dig some sand. It's he'll for everyone out there.

Id like to buy this guy a few steak dinners, or lobster, his choice! Although if I was a new employee, i would really think twice about doing any of this. The new tier leaves your spouse with only 3 years of LODD benefits and if you are forced to retire only 44% of your pay. Thanks Gov Patterson and Cuomo!

Not an opinion, it is fact.
