Granted $100 is a little bit of money for an exam fee, the amount is infinitesimal in the greater scheme of a possible multi-million dollar career. People whose dream is to be a firefighter will take the exam no matter what the fee is and that's who we want for the job. Where there's a will, there's a way! If a billionaire lost his eye sight tomorrow how much do you think he'd pay to get it back???

That person is a medic??? Yikes!!! 😴

How's the patient???

Cheer's Seth, Enjoy!

Positive publicity for the fire service and this turns into a heated battle?!!!! What the Funck!!! And who cares if you're volley or paid. You're either a fireman or you're not! You either get it or you don't!

Thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Daniel Groover. May he rest in Peace and God brings comfort to all whom suffer through this tragic period of their lives.. 5 LODD in 13 months is very terrible news. The question now with everyone bringing up health and fitness is... Do they have yearly medicals and some type of fitness program for Houston Firefighters??

Unprofessional would be department's not getting off of 46.26 when everyone else is on a trunk frequency, or there's is an actual run or a job ongoing or getting on the radio to give your noon time test when companies are currently on a run or just finishing up. This guy just decided to man up and say what a lot of us are already thinking!

Circumstances dictate procedures.... However, anybody who suggests dragging a 2.5" hose into a private dwelling should probably spend a little more time drilling with moving and operating handlines. By the time you have flaked, charged and started to operate the line, most if not all of the rest of the dwelling will be on fire. Not to mention, if you think you'll be able to efficiently maneuver the line, you're kidding yourself! Most rooms in private dwellings, even comtemporary construction with larger rooms, go out with 60 gallons or Less. So bring your 1.75" line that delivers 180 gpm and operate your line in each room for approx. 15 seconds and your fire should be knocked down in a few minutes with the booster tank!

How about a dual response??? Or will that compromise the relationship and ego's between Millwood and Yorktown when one or the other arrives first due to a job???

Interesting conversation... First and foremost, i do not like mmq'ing and do not know the particulars about this fire. Secondly, the amount of time I have being a firefighter is infinitesimal and I've only been to a handful of real butt-whipping jobs, but do see my share of work from time to time. I don't know how many firefighters are arriving on Hartsdale's initial assignment. I don't know what type of conditions were present on arrival. I don't know if this fire was in the incipient, flashover, or transitioning into the full growth stage. I do not know the smoke condition that was present. And I don't know if a civilian offering information is always 100% correct. From the picture outside it doesn't look to be to to much but i could be totally wrong... If the chief wants to do a 360, that's at his discretion, not that i feel that this is always necessary on the onset with a "known life hazard" but someone should be doing it in the early stages of the operation. What I do know is that pulling up to a fire with a handful of men and trying to bring an advanced fire under control is no easy task! So kudos to Hartsdale FD for making the grab and saving that woman's life. After all, that's our job! I also know that... The fire goes as the first line goes. However, if and when you are presented with a situation such as arriving to a fire with limited manpower and are presented with a known life hazard, if you do not have the manpower to simultaneously stretch the first line and start a primary, the known life hazard always takes precedence over all other operations and must be immediately addressed. If the house burns to the ground in the process, oh well! If a chief does a 360 and reports fire issuing from a window, it presents a much less volatile environment for us firefighters and makes an aggressive search that much easier because the fire is venting and you won't have worry about that dense turbulent smoke that might otherwise be present, violently waiting to light up and burn your ass. If your first due engine is equipped with a 24 which I'd imagine it is and a known life hazard does exist, you should also be considering entering that window and isolating that room to conduct a primary (P.S. there's a great vid on the internet from a job i think on LI where a fireman does a great job saving a baby VEIS'ing from the 4 side of a peaked cape). What "everybodygoes" does point out which is an excellent point is knowing your buildings! Besides all the other ranting the probies get when they show up to the fh about shutting their mouths, showing up, and constantly being on the move, I always add in what I believe are a few very important concepts a firefighter should know. Knowing your buildings, their inherent layouts, and reading smoke. If you can do those things very well, everything else will become 2nd nature through drilling, talking shop and plain old experience over time. There are many different types of building out there but lets focus on PD's cause that seems to be the bread n' butter round here. Due to construction, alternations, additions, and our poor economy, anything is possible (Beware of Taxpayers!!!! cannot emphasize enough!) Knowing the buildings in your first due and outlying area will help you understand their building construction; Legacy vs. contemporary, fire spread, number of beds n baths you need to search, alternative egress and ingress points, height; what portables will reach which floor; windows/roof AND where the interior stairs are!! Smoke is another biggie. Smoke by color and density amongst a couple other characteristics is going to tell you 99% of the time where the fire is, what it's doing, what's burning, what stage the fire's in, and where it's traveling to. Once you've read the building and the smoke, the engine will know where to stretch to locate, confine, extinguish, and the truck will know where to start their search for not only the victims but the fire, and where to go to when searching for extension. So Let's turn this conversation a little more positive and hear more from the really salty guys, cause i know there are plenty of old timers on here and they have plenty of untapped knowledge.... Shoot------> oh wait, this is ny, cant do that anymore LOL

Amen. God speed to the brothers we've lost and more importantly to the fathers these men have lost and a blessed and safe career to all

Only had the pleasure of working with John a few times on details to the East side. Like already stated, always a smiling face and a true gentleman! John will missed by the masses. Rest in Peace Brother

You're correct, it isn't free, but God forbid the people in the middle and lower classes get something from their taxes for a change. You want to talk about crippling the nation???? How about the fact we spend more money on military than every single country below us! How bout we talk about the 400 richest people in America that are more affluent than the bottom 185 million. How about we talk about how the average person got $26 back from bush tax cuts and the richest got over $266,000! Why don't we comment on the fact that tax cuts and the trickle-down affect never works because transnational corporations spend their returns on innovations to reduce jobs in America and the money is never recirculated... Bush's reign in office was the worst economic/job growth since the Great Depression. Does anybody really think another republican is going to help you guys??????? They wouldn't even pass the James Zadroga Act until they got their tax cuts, what a Fu***ing disgrace and miscarraige of justice! You have a better chance of me taking a vacation to Syria than voting for a republican. They're all scum but at least you're going to get something out of a democratic leader, c'mon people! When Clinton was in, we had a surplus, social programs we're up, and more people who really needed help were getting the help. Granted the repeal of the Glass Stea-Gall Act, who i might add was written by 3 republican(GLB), I'd say he did a pretty good job.

The fact that people are complaining that they may get free health care is incomprehensible to me! We have so many problems in this country, I myself wouldn't even know where to start but with millions of people without health insurance in an industrialized nation, i don't think healthcare for everyone is a bad place to start. The PPACA is a great idea; Getting rid of insurance companies and their 19% profit yearly (billions upon billions) would have been great! Maybe we should focus on multinational and transnational corporations, special interest groups, and lobbyists paying off senators to vote in their favor, keeping the status quo, and screwing everyone except the less than 1% of America! That's why the entire bill was not passed and now we're getting hammered from both directions! This country is a plutocracy!

In my honest opinion, a "working fire" is any fire which is advancing or has already advanced past the incipient stage and necesitates the stretching of a handline to extinguish before causing any major life loss or structural damage. Once this has happened, everyone on the fireground or responding now knows we have an IDLH atmosphere and the fire will definately necessitate the use of your mask and not just wearing it, although everyone should be using it anyway because of the worsening atmosphere's we're now entering into. Many departments around Westchester and other counties also use some type of code or signal to upgrade their alarm assignments forthcoming whether it be a building on fire or a major gas leak. So when we do give a 10-75, why can't we just give a quick preliminary report... "10-75, we have fire in a 2nd floor bedroom of a 2 1/2 story 20X40 Peaked roof wood frame PD " OR "10-75, we have a major gas leak in a 1 story 400X400 Lightweight commercial".... It should be the same as a good roof man finding his way to the roof and painting a nice picture for the IC and everyone on the fireground. And a car fire is just that, a car fire, NOTHING MORE.....

Well, if you're looking to lose weight and gain stamina and size, i would suggest the stair master coupled with calisthenics, plyometrics and a healthy diet. Forget everything you've ever learn about heavy lifting and "no pain, no gain". It may work short term but in my honest opinion, i think heavy lifting is useless and harmful. P90X and Insanity workout... Downright dangerous! The body shouldn't be losing more than a pound or 2 per week. To lose 30 IBS in 30 days is crazy and super unhealthy! Does it work, yeah sure, but in reality It's bad for your joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscular skeletal system. For any women out there reading this, do not try P90X, it will destroy your pelvic floor! I don't want to take anything away from people who lift heavy and who enjoy it nor am i looking to kill the companies who sell the gym equipment most people use, but the fact of the matter is, most people who are using this stuff do it to compete with everyone else and do not appreciate what they're actually capable of doing, being happy with themselves, and not going overboard and injuring themselves. I lifted weights for a few years myself before realizing that the mass i was gaining would be gone in a matter of a month if i stopped going. Plus the fact that i wasn't gaining any "usable strength". By that, i mean how strong you are pound for pound and what your gym time is enabling you to do after you leave. Personally, i have found that going into the gym and doing push-ups, pull-ups, dips, and other body weight exercises enables you to slowly put on size while strengthening your tendons, ligaments, and muscles you didn't even realize existed. By no means are you going to see the size increase quickly, but the size and strength you gain will last your lifetime, unlike the size and water weight most people are putting on by spending thousands of dollars on BullSh*t supplements and bench pressing more than they should be. If you need a spotter to lift the weight off the bar, you're already lifting too much! But by all means, taking an amino supplement can absolutely be good for you depending on which one you decide to use, But Anything With a Black Box Label is Definately Not on That List! Now you can decide for yourself what is best for you and what you would enjoy doing for exercise but i promise you, if you put the time in, you will not be displeased with your outcome and it will become increasingly harder to injure yourself! It will definately take longer to build mass this way but it's all about the time you put in, and nothing good happens over night! There are a few people on here who know who i am and know what my frame looked like 10 or 12 years ago. And they also know I barely even have to do anything in the gym anymore to keep my physique because of the time i've put it. Pound for pound, you can become impressively strong and have a lot of fun doing it! If you have any questions or need any input on a few starter exercises, don't hesitate to ask Seth! Good Luck

Thoughts and prayers for Billy, friends and family. Let us know how he's doing Rob

Very good question. I wondert myself where they will fall on the command structure as well and if there will be a command vehicle for them. My next question is; will there be an additional firefighter staffed each tour? And does this mean they're finally going to hire so new candidates and up their staffing at least one more firefighter. It is rediculous that Peekskill has a Truck with a pump and one person manning it. I would think it's difficult to multi-task; operating an aerial while pumping just a single line

Prayers for all involved in this MVA... Hopes for a full recovery for everyone.

No, Thats Truth! It's amazing when people don't have a contingency to get home because they've traveled the same road for 20 years...Or even better, you're cutting someone out of a car in a revene and someone asks you to move the fire apparatus because they want to get home. I've said it once and i'll say it again...I Love helping people, but I Hate People Sometimes!

Sources tell me that while a couple philosophers were studying the calendar they just realized it was two-sided....OOPS another 400 million years!

I also have a member in my firehouse whom lived through the September 11th attacks...He never really speaks much about that day but i know his story and how badly he was injured physically and emotionally...Everytime i work with him i always think to myself, "wow, after all he's been through, pain, and injuries, he is still coming to work, getting on the engine, and taking in runs!" That alone speaks volumes of the mans personal character and what he stands for...God bless the men and women who've past before us, on that day, and the days after. God bless all those who still choose a career path in the emergency services while knowing the inherent risks we all face in our line of work. Prayers for everyone here and now and forever

Just wanted to extend a thank you to JBE... I had the pleasure by his invitation to see the main FDNY communications office at Metrotech in Brooklyn the other day while on a visit to FDNY HDQTRS. It was a very impressive sight and nice to meet and greet all the guys and gals who work where all the magic begins... Everyone was very professional and a great work atmosphere. Most people don't get to see what a difficult and stressful job it is to be a fire alarm dispatcher and these guys made it look like the rest of the world is moving in slow motion. These people are just not credited enough for the work they do behind the scenes; its truely incredible Just wish they'd give you guys a kitchen!!! Thanks again Jimmy and enjoy vacation Dave
