Does anyone know what kind of communications system/radios NYSP aviation is using? I've never heard them on a NYSP radio channel, and apparently today they landed at the Pine Island firehouse in the middile of a fire prevention detail to report a brush fire. Maybe I'm wrong but I would think they'd just call their dispatcher and have them call Orange 911 to dispatch Pine Island rather than land and physically report the fire.

In orange county, county policy is three pages and then it turned over to your mutual aid, and that includes resounding for a driver or emt. Now, I don't know about westchester, but not enough volunteers is not always the problem in Orange County. I have one neighboring VAC that has a very young membership, and if it's not a hot call, they don't go. You will literally hear them page three times for an elderly fall victim, tot it to the mutual aid, and then ten minutes later page out for a rollover on the highway and they get a fly car and at least one rig out with one page, that is definitely a situation where a penalty would help. As for commercial services, in my opinion, you need to contract with them for a permanent in house rig and if you're going to do that and at that point you might as well go paid, otherwise, they may be around or not be around. Another neighboring VAC had made a deal to use Emstar/ Care 1 (whoever they are this week) as their backup since they only had a couple EMTs and their mutual aid agencies were tired of always going over there. However even though the VAC has a number of new EMTs and personnel in EMT class, they have come to rely on the commercial service to take the calls they don't want. The problem is that Emstar has a significant decrease in the number of units they put out over night, sometimes only two or three for an area covering from fishkill to the NYC line in Westchester, meaning that frequently they don't have a rig available to respond. The area is also generally covered by a fly car, which for obvious reasons can't transport, so they mutual aid rig has to go too, which kinda defeats the purpose of the Emstar agreement. I think part of something that needs to be looked at is how to get volunteers out to these calls that aren't glory filled picture on the front page of the newspaper type calls.

hey guys, just a quick question, does anyone know what is the minimum score the NYPD is reaching on their civil service lists to go through the hiring process. I know that it takes a while, in the two range year, but I got my results today from the April 2013 NYPD test and got a 91.76. I was just wondering if anyone knew how high the score needed to be and how long the current wait was . Thanks

I keep hearing that depending on who the new Mayor and Commissioner are, there maybe a large hiring push, but i was thinking it was gonna be around the two year mark.

That's what I figured. Thanks guys

I actually don't see the squad bench as useless, however my corps usually gets out with at least three on a call, so we put someone on either side of the patient and a crew member/family member in the captain's chair. I also have a local pd who calls us out to every mva with an unaccompanied patient under 18 for "evaluations", so I just cram as many as I can onto the bench seat if I have to transport them. As for turning the bench seat into a workstation, I was invited to come down and test ride some of the demo rigs when we were looking at new rigs a couple months ago, and wheeled coach brought down a demo with what they call a "medic in mind" interior. Essentially, they cut the bench seat down to a double seat and placed in a workstation with draws at the end of the bench seat, and then if you wanted, you could spec your attendant seat/ cpr seat as a double wide seat so you didn't loose patient capacity in the rig. I liked the idea since I hate having the medics set up all their stuff on the bench seat and then having to hold it and watch stuff go flying all the way to the hospital.

From what I understand, some of the volunteer fire fighter groups in NY are opposing blue lights on emergency vehicles, particularly police vehicles, because they feel that criminals will seem the volunteer POVs with their blue lights, think the volunteer FFs are cops and attack them or something.

Just watched the pilot episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine with Andy Samberg. Actually a pretty decent cop show with good laughs. I can't confirm the authenticity of the NYPD stuff in the show, but I like it and hope it continues. http://www.fox.com/brooklyn-nine-nine/

So I've found a small problem with the radio/radio system my VAC uses, the second we step inside a building, our portables become completely broken and no one can copy us. However, our local PD, who uses the same system and dispatchers but different portables doesn't have this issue and can be heard fine. This leads me to believe that it's a issue with our portables rather than anything else. We use Motorola HT750s and the PD is using Kenwood portables. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this issue?

Is there any specific reason that Silver Lake put the Ferrara engine as 158 since the pierce was 157, future plans to add something else in the future?

Show starts with a Lieutenant and a "Sheriff" (who wears captain's bars) working on patrol in what is supposed to be a large city, yet they know people like it's a small town, and then say they are part of WCPD and are supervised by a captain? that kinda threw it off for me. As for the actors, it felt like they were kinda neutral/uninteresting, and once they started adding the whole second spirit/ 4 horse men of the apocalypse thing, it just started to seem kinda cheesy, like most of today's modern "horror", the only problem is they left out the skimpily dressed girls. I predict it won't make it past this season, unless there are some drastic changes

It's because it's NY. The same state that decided that since they wanted to teach CPR in EMT class, they had to change the entire EMS system around from the national curriculum. The same state that has decided that if you own an out of state corporation but live in NY, you should pay corporation taxes in NY in addition to the other state's taxes.

As I understood it, it was to give the rig the ability to carry more equipment. The EMTs and Medics could use the rear seats to store their turnout gear and personal stuff, ALS rigs were going to get a refrigerator to allow them to carry cool saline to administer therapeutic hypothermic treatments, and it was to allow for the transport of additional family members/ride alongs in a safer way then having them ride in the back of the rig.

City of Newburgh NY Police Officers exam, filing open 9/3 - 9/30. Test is on 11/16, same day as the Orange County Police Officer/Deputy Sheriff exam. http://www.cityofnewburgh-ny.gov/sites/newburghny/files/u97/police_officer_exam_2013.pdf

Any idea on how may they're looking to hire right now? I filed today, but I'm only getting an extra 5 points for working outside NYC, so I suspect I'll be pretty low on the list. Also, I've been on the provisional list for a little while, and the guy I talked to down there made it sound like being on the provisional list would would give you some kind of benefit in terms of the civil service exam list, but I hadn't heard anything else about it, so I don't know if it's really true.

Not to mention what happens if some stupid DWI idiot decides to use his car as a weapon or pulls a gun? Not much the fire fighters can do.

It also can have nothing to do with the scanner at all. My vac has dual pagers with the fire tones in them form members who also ride with the FD, and they say that the ems page for an mva will be crystal clear, and then the fire page 5 seconds later will be almost completely static. Both agencies are paged from the same dispatch center off the same tower.

I know some rigs, mostly the specialized inter-facility transport rigs have RNs on their crew, but that's because the patients they're transporting are usually using specialized equipment that's above the medic certification. I've never heard of a PA being on an ambulance (I'd assume they'd make more not working on an ambulance), but they might be able to get a waver or something from the DOH to take the paramedic challenge, but they'd definilty have to take the remac exam.
