I think STAT213 hit the nail on the head! The concepts coming out of Europe for safer designs seem like an improvement but we as an industry are slow to adopt them. I rarely see forward facing/swivel sweets on new trucks coming out etc that you posted from manufacturers on the web. The design of the ambulance seems stuck on tradition, a dangerous one.

How did/do these trucks work out for FDNY with the four door cab? Any idea on the change in Chassis from Dodge to Ford and four door cab to extended cab? Thanks.

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-sunnyvale-20130101,0,7082580,full.story Interesting story. I think this sounds like a good idea but does it really work?

Nice story in the news up here today! Boston FF help out elderly, veteran robbery victim in the Brighton section of Boston. http://www.boston.com/metrodesk/2012/12/11/firefighters-bring-good-cheer-and-some-cash-year-old-brighton-robbery-victim/CYgbiSdeJD9578MdWGO3IL/story.html

Nice looking truck! I wouldn't guess it was a Demer's. The patient compartment is the only difference. Lots of room to work back there. A lot of private companies here in Boston have one Demer's truck only. My guess is that they get a good deal to get them in the door but they don't get a lot of takers after that first unit. That extra room looks like a godsend up front!

I don't know the specifics of this truck but Dartmouth, MA (south coast near/New Bedford) has/had a similar type ladder. I haven't see too many in MA. http://www.firenews.org/mass/DartmouthD2L2.jpg

Sorry, I have no idea how this fire was reported.
-
Boston had a fire today in the Roslindale section of the city. The fire was in the 3rd floor of a 6 family. The street was very narrow making access for the ladder companies interesting. One of the occupants of the house walked by me and her daughter was asking what she was going to do for toys now! Multiple companies on scene for 2 hours along with BPD and BEMS.

The process for cities and towns that use civil service here in MA still has you choose 4 cities/towns. Yes, Boston has a residency requirement to be hired. If I remember correctly, I haven't looked at my scores/rankings recently, the breakdown is as follows, name: hiring prefence, ie son/daughter of LODD/: resident/non-resident: veteran/non-veteran, and EMT/EMT-P certification yes or no. You are listed by your score and how you fit into the previous areas. MA is in the process of changing their civil service ranking system. I think this is how it is listed but I can't check to be sure, sorry. I have heard that being an EMT-P can help you get hired without veteran status. Boston PD has a similar ranking. Boston EMS allows you to be a non-resident at time of hire but you have to live in the city within 6 months of hire.

Interesting article! I am curious as to where this might go for the future. http://www.nytimes.c...=1&ref=nyregion

I had the opportunity to head over to Navy Week Boston this afternoon to check out the ships that were available to be boarded. Very impressive collection of ships. I was only able to get on the USS Gravely, an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer. The ship was pretty amazing. The crew was great and took the time to show you the ship and talk about their different roles on board. All photos except for the remote gun system and missile launch pad are from the Gravely. The German vessel had a beer garden on the helipad. The ship was closed when I was there so I wasn't sure if it was for visitors or sailors only. Have a Happy and Safe 4th of July!

Nice story and puts something postive on the losses felt by Worcester fire. http://boston.cbsloc...r-fire-academy/

I re-read the article and do get the point of it now. To add my post I would agree with the authors of the story from the Herald. That is a lot of money coming in for licensing fees! It drives me nuts how much you have to pay to recert in this state compared to what the ave. EMT-B in this state/in general makes.
-
I didn't really get the point of this article from the Herald. I was going to say 120 hours but the post above has it correct. I won't characterize getting your certification in MA as this easy. I worked out of state for five years and was unable become certified at the level I was at in another state because of MA regulations and couldn't go down a provider level. I let my certs go and a few years later took my EMT-B in MA to become certified again. I wonder if this article is referring to the EMS boot camps that have sprung up down here. I know they claim to get you out the door in a very short period. The program I took my EMT-B was very strict and told me it was from the state that you couldn't miss any classes and if you did you had to make it up but it had to be the exact same class. Thanks to the original poster for finding this!

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the Vendome Fire that claimed the lives of 9 BFD FF. I included an interesting story from today's Boston Globe about a current BFD district chief whose father was killed on that day. The story has some photos about 1/4 of the way down on the left from the scene. http://www.boston.co...a_sons_calling/

I came across this article the other day. I was surprised to see a non-Seagrave truck etc. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/30/nyregion/city-island-fire-company-threatened-again-by-budget-cuts.html?_r=2&hpw&pagewanted=all

Interesting to see that they don't require you to be a resident of Providence! Busy city. It depends on your certification at appointment but I wonder how quickly you get put on a "rescue." I don't know if anything has changed but Providence used to only have 5 rescues in service and they were very, very busy. Great blog on Providence FD EMS is rescuingprovidence.com. RI is an NREMT state so getting EMS cert can be relatively easy. Good luck if you apply!

I attended the RI EMS Expo this past week and have uploaded some photos. Great, conference! I would recommend it to anyone. Worth the drive if you can make it. Inexpensive, good CE and vendors. Got a chance to see the Stryker Power Load and try it out, very nice! Johnston, RI rescue had an interesting feature. The bench seat had a step built into it. Added some extra room to maneuver in that area. It was possible due to the location of the wheel well. Rhode Island Hospital/Hasbro Children's had some nice trucks as well!
