I'm sure the decision to transport of not to transport a family member is an agency call. Or at least some type of policy is in place covering something like it. I would also think that in the most lax of cases. The agency would leave it up to the crew. I think it's a good policy NOT to have the family in the bus... one less person freaking out I'm sure helps things out a lot.

Thank God I still got it.. I thought I was slipping there for awhile.. Rocking the hizzy with a 22!!

When you think about it. It's not a bad idea to replace the command vehicles on a regular rotation. It costs a fraction of what it would cost to replace apparatus. So that comparison dosn't really work. But if you look at the use diffrence, it makes sense. The Chiefs (sic) vehicle will have much higher mileage and engine hours. It will also have less of a sheltered life. Most chiefs don't have the ability to house their assigned vehicles in a garage and protect is from the elements. As rescue 20 stated. The sale of a vehicle after some six years of service will allow the department to get some money back while the vehicle has some resale value left. That in turn can be put toward the purchase of a new vehicle. If you look at the alternative: One could run the vehicles into the ground and have pretty much no resale value to it. I think you will find. Keeping the vehicle till the end of it's life will eventually cost more than the replacement program. I know this to be TRUE at least in one case. We has a real.... Shi*box of a Chiefs (sic) car that the district refused to replace. In all, the car cost well beyond what it would have to replace the thing in the first place. Enough said.

Great time had by all. Mozeltov on the new truck......

Looks good. I hope you have better luck with the Sutphen part of that rig than we did. Dealing with Sutphen EAST was a nightmare.

Driver was "clocked" the other night on the Hutch Riv Pkwy at 120+. Was a 92 Honda. Had a lot if aftermarket stuff in it. No roll cage, but a bunch of other aftermarket stuff.

Diffrent color helmets, but all have the white Shield now. Chiefs have white with red. the other officers have white with black. Rank in center

Good topic Andy. I agree with all the collective observations that have been made by the previous post. I have also noticed in the last few years (perhaps it has been longer) that a lot of the people stepping up to take an officers position are doing so for the status and power that it give them, instead of looking to improve or continue the work their department is doing. You can tell these people by the amount of inacivity during their "term". I'm not limiting this to the Chiefs. I am taking about all officers from the top to bottom. Often I see people get in as a Lieutenant and pretty much take and unmolested ride to the top. Training is an important part of any operation. If you are set to teach someting, it's a great idea to know it yourself. The career service has a leadership academy that officers attend. Tactics and proceedure are discussed and practiced to name a few things. I think it would be a positive move for the volunteer service to do something similar. Perhaps a condensed version of the classes listed in this forum. Just a thought.

Battalion 15 is the County Hazmat Coordinator. In addition to his other Battalion Chief duties.
-
The idea as I have heard was to reduce the size of the current battalions. Some were like 12 departments and others were only 4 or 5. This evens them out so they say.
-
If you really want to know about the realignment of the battalions, talk to your Chief. A mailing was sent out by J. Jackson from DES that outlines in a DRAFT, the new assignments. Battalion 17 will be: Yorktown, Millwood, Moheagan,Cont. Village and Camp Smith. I believe that the Tri village area up by Buchanan will be a battallion newly created. I agree with you Andy. It will be sad to see us part from Tony B. He's a good man.

The cruise lights cam in a number of years ago when the citizens were complaining about no police presence on the highways. The Supt. of the SP up there changed the whole thing and they phased in the constant light. Even the lighted STATE POLICE sign was added.

A blow to law enforcement all over the world. RIP

I wasn't too hot on either one of them actually. Does anyone remember back in the late 70's or early 80.(pre cable). One of the networks did a program where they were doing ride-alongs with a few companies in the city( I think Queens). I was very young, and the reception of the station sucked as anyone can attest to who lived up in westchester before cable came around. I wrote to ABC because that is the network that carried it, and asked them if they could recall the name. They were less than helpful. I'm not sure if it was CBS or NBC now. But anyway. Somone else remember the program?

Car fire. North bound TSP near Rt134

Years ago our department followed the practice of driver stays with the apparatus ( a good practice) but over the years, bad habits and shortage in manpower have had drivers come away from their assigned units. This as you would imagine does not apply to apparatus that are in operation. Still the practice of driver with the truck is something that if nothing else makes logical sense. I'm thinking the apparatus operator on this particular TL may have been toward the rear near the turntable? Or. the fact that "over staffing" a rig in Mt. Vernon has not been an issue for many years. You may have had the driver fall in with his company.

This isn't the first time this has happened. A while back I think there was somthing posted aboiut this. I definitly remember hearing another story about this happening where they stopped operations once they found out the address was not a paid member either. But in that case the people had just moved into the area and didn't know about the "subscription" requirement.

In Big Daddy he was the guy in the shopping cart.
-
Do you think that he couldn't work around the eight 24 hr tours he had to work a month? I would think he could have flown out to the west coast and auditioned for parts untill he got something steady. Just a thought. Very nice guy just that same.

The two pictures that are posted are two diffrent vehicles. The one posted closer to the beginning is the police ambulance that is operated by members of the Emergency Service Section. They are EMT's and they will operate during regular business hours. They are used for members of the department that have injuries that will not allow them to get to or from the hospital. They generally require one of the destinations to be within the confines of the city of NY. This unit turns out of Queens. Members of the department can also get loan medical equipment from this facility. The second picture is a vehicle operated by the BOMB SQUAD. It carries special equipment in it like a robot or the bomb suits.

There is a program for FF's overseas. If yoiu look in Fire Engineering or one of those mags you will see a full page color ad in there. I know they have run the ad a few times in 2005.

EMT. nothing should change with your pager. Control will keep the old system as a back up and for paging.

If your neighbor has a cascade unit I would suggest you hold off with going with the added expense of putting one on your rig. The added cost and the space that it will require is not worth it. If you can call in the same resource from a mutual aid company that would probably be your best bet. I speak from experience. We purchased a rescue in the early 90's when there were not many cascade units in the county. It seemed that after the purchase just about every department around us did the same thing. Now we are over saturated with cascades in the area. An in house air compressor would still be a good thing to have, but to take up that space and add that cost is something that yu have the luxury to opt out of.
