norestriction liked a post in a topic by SRS131EMTFF in Legally Recognize Westboro Church As A Hate Group
Do they advocate violence? No. Has the church or any prominent member of the church been accused of violence? No.
Do they speak unfathomable hate? Yes. Do I fundamentally disagree with their speech? Yes. Do they have a right to their speech? Yes.
What will labeling this group as a legally recognized do? Absolutely nothing, they will still be able to protest funerals and spew their hate speech. Do I agree with it? No, but god damn it they have a right to speak it and you better believe that they can and will defend their right. We can condemn their speech in the strongest terms but we can not limit their speech no matter how extreme it is. So long as their speech does not violate any law, there is absolutely no choice but to accept the fact that they are entitled to their speech.
What you see as "push the 1st amendment to the extreme" I, as well as the Supreme Court of the United States, see as simply exercising their right to 1st amendment speech protection. If you don't like what they say, don't listen but they have not broken any laws and thus you have no right to limit their speech.

We went down without hesitation, slept on cots, sat in the dark, ate PB&J for four days, cleaned the firehouses, ran many calls. I took a bunch of pictures. There was damage that hasn't been seen in many years, if ever and going down and being able to help was an honor and a privilege that I'll never forget. I took the photos to remember it. The firefighters and residents were extremely grateful to see us and took pictures with us.

If we had to say there is a down side to being part of the Fire Serrvice this would be it. I was a member of the Yonkers Fire Department for almost 29 years and I can say with certainty that you burry too many friends before their time. However to go along with that is one of my sayings I used all the time. Everything in life is give and take, therefore if it were not for the Fire Service I would not have made so many Good and Close friends over the last 29 years. I had the pleasure of being one of A. Rods traing Officers when he started his career on the YFD, it was there that are friendship started. Tony was a True Gentleman, True Friend, Geat Firefighter, and one of the most giving people you would ever want to meet. He would do anything for a person in need, and he continued that even on his last day with us. The only thing that brings a sense of compfort to me as I think about my friend is that I know he is in excellent company with all the other Great people taken from us to early. You will truly be missed by the many people that you touched their lives
Good bye MY FRIEND see you again one day.
Your Friend
Mike

I don't have an issue with career firefighters. I have an issue with you.
I, and so many more people, have grown tired of you only speaking up on these forums to beat your drum and stand atop your soapbox to deem all volunteer fire departments as incapable, lying, deceitful organizations. You think because you use big words and generally have ample grammar in your posts, that all of us are blind to your obvious dismay for the majority of us.
The issues ongoing in the Irvington FD are being beaten to death here with no true resolve. I agree with you that it's noble of the gentleman involved to stand for what he believes in. Just as I think anyone who stands up for what they believe in is honorable, because let's face it, too many people would rather not take a position on something and join the majority (drink the Kool-Aid, if you will).
Anyone that doesn't see you for who you really are and for the views you have of us evil volunteers is either naive or blind. We aren't perfect, not a single one of us is, but do you really, honestly think that coming on here and playing your game is solving anything? And am I alone on these forums to think that this story in Irvington is going to have little or no impact on anything?
There's so many more things in this world and in what we do that need our attention. And for me, those issues are ensuring we all are offering the best fire prevention training, fire safety education, strict code enforcement and adequate response to any emergency we're called upon - regardless of the community, department and whether or not those sworn to do these tasks is paid, period.
You're an intelligent man from what I can tell, with a wealth of knowledge and experience that could help better the fire service. Do you really think spending your time trying to dissect and disassemble the volunteer fire service is helping ANYONE?
Good day to you, sir.

Could you imagine how pissed they would be when they are told about how many guys go out on worker's compensation that aren't really hurt? Or how much is spent on overtime to cover them?
Holy cow!

I didn't mean it to sound like a conspiracy theory, just I wasn't too sure on the legality of it. But now I'm even questioning that. Would an incident like that be covered under Article 35 (use of deadly force to protect a third party, people in a building or on the ground, from imminent harm, or no, because of the number of non-involved persons on the aircraft.

“The authority to shoot down a civilian aircraft is delegated to a very small number of very senior officials, civilian and military, within the Department of Defense,” McHale said.

Not a chance. The military can not even shot down any aircraft without an express verbal authority and approval from the President. While the military has been given some leeway in making this decision without approval, I can tell you there is not a chance in hell that the NYPD has any authority. Think of this, where would that aircraft, or its parts, land if it was shot down over NYC??? Sorry, the ramifications would be like ones we have never seen before. Leave the job where it falls at, the military, not the NYPD.

norestriction liked a post in a topic by JJB531 in 7 Boston FF quit after failing EMT test
I'm failing to see the problem. They were hired as probationary firefighters, and one of the terms of their employment that they had full knowledge of and agreed to was to become state certified EMT's , which they failed to properly complete, and in lieu of termination they were afforded an opportunity to resign and be rehired upon successful completion of passing the exam. If there are terms of employment that an employee must meet to remain employed, then they need to meet the minimum standards set forth by the employer, otherwise dismissal is appropriate. They knew they had to pass this exam to keep their job, and for whatever reason, they failed to do so. Sorry but maybe there are 7 others out there who are better suited for the position then.

norestriction liked a post in a topic by SRS131EMTFF in 7 Boston FF quit after failing EMT test
Seems like the firefighters were given ample opportunity to gain a certification and were indeed informed of the requirement and given tutoring to comply with it The 7 decided they did not want to do it so they resigned instead of being hired so they can keep their jobs, maybe. Unless I am missing something it seems they dropped the ball, not BFD. Also, I can't seem to agree that the chief is being nefarious, he could have fired the firefighters but decided to let them resign so they could potentially get the EMT cert.
Given the turmoil of the Mass. EMT scandal from last year, I really don't think the department is being out of line. If someone thinks im wrong/can correct me please do.

Personal opinion, leave it up. This is a training tool of what not to do. Doesn't matter if it's a local department, or it's from 2000 miles away. Everybody makes mistakes and this is one to learn from.

Discussing the events of a recent call, talking about ways which could of made the run smother or safer, opening other people’s ( or my ) eyes to other opinions, thinking outside the box and looking at it from another stand point is one of the things I believe have helped me and the guys from WECO, that I have worked with for years…
How is this toxic ??? what I believe, what is really toxic is the guy who believes “ what I do is right and that’s that !! “ and can not take criticism from other’s who may have done it differently…I have found the guys with an OPEN MIND, are the best ones to work with, and together a team can excel.
One of the major problems which can come from this, is just how someone brings it up, if it is NOT broadcasted properly, it will come across as an insult, and part of being an adult, is that we learn to listen to others and respect others feelings…. I am not 100 % sure, but I believe this is what JFlynn always means when he says QTIP… and I have started to agree with this…. We need to stop being babies and man up…. ( no disrespect to the ladies out there … )

Come on Capt.....I thought you were around a while! Some guys on this job definitely know everything. Ask'em, they'll tell you! LOL, anyway...this certainly was, "just a car fire", but that doesn't mean that there were a few curveballs involved. Multiple agencies, terrain gradient, gasoline and exposure to name a few. Thanks to the miracle of You Tube (for better or worse) we are given the opportunity to critique. Nothing wrong with kicking tactics around and looking at what was right and what was wrong. My company covers an area that is plagued by car fires. Still, something is different each time and we get them a lot. I don't always wear my mask. Maybe I should. I've been caught not paying attention and opening the line facing the building, rather than the street. Dumb sh!t happens....good things too. It's nice to talk it out. I definitely was caught wondering why there were, at times, 5 hand lines putting water on a vehicle fire. Maybe there was an explanation, what do I know? I wasn't there, but we can all ask questions and read answers from those in the know.

I dont know you from a whole in the wall but I must say you sound like the voice of reason and I appreciate you taking the time in spite of some of the silly remarks to CRITIQUE the video so those of us who wish to learn do learn from your expertise.
I'm 40 years old with 14 years of volunteering and and I cant stand people who "know it all" and arent willing to listen.
Thank You Capt

Thanks BB, glad to be back. Don't mind Bull (I think he has a good heart but a sense of hubris and bravado of a FNG), if he had any idea how many boxes you responded to in the boroughs in your career (as opposed to always telling us how many boxes HE responds to these days), maybe he'd pay attention to your posts a little more closely. Talk to you soon Brother.

Absolutely, if the IC from Hastings had asked YFD to protect the exposure, and then H-O-H shut down two or three lines.....
Like Bad Box said, this is NOT a criticism. My job had one of these years ago, only problem was the vehicle was pointed downhill TOWARDs the exposure. We filled the driveway 3 feet deep with foam to extinguish.
Think about the "wash-down" run-off that goes into the storm drain. Where does it go? Does it accumulate to explosive levels someplace else? Or being Hastings, does it just flow into the Hudson....
Something to think about for the next time. Every job is a learner. Takes nothing away from the effort the Brothers made there.

was this called in to 911 via a landline or cell does anyone know? I ask because that might answer why yonkers was dispatched and I will give Yonkers credit if the address was Hastings for sticking around and helping. Class decision by Yonkers
