Yonkers should bring back neighborhood schooling. The busses that shuttle children to and from school every day that is funded by tax dollars needs to stop. Apparently it is "racist" to go to a school in your own neighborhood, so to rectify this "racism", they shuttle someone 15-20 minutes across the city to a school instead of letting the child go to a school that is within walking distance of thier home.

So they are laying off and possibly closing 2 entire companies when Ridge Hill is almost complete and the apartments and office buildings up there are close to being populated? That is completely unacceptable.

My department used ProTech Titans. All the guys seem to like them and I personally like them as well. They have the best dexterity out of any gloves that I have worn and have held up pretty good over the past 2 years.

Our department has recently put trainning requirements, as well as years served requirements into effect for our line officers. Lt. is 3 years served with FF1 FF2 FF survival ICS 100 and 300 Intro to fire officer and Evoc Capt. is 5 years served and must have served a term as Lt. with all Lt. trainning requirements as well as ISC 700 Truck Co. ops Fire Officer 1 and Fire behavior and arson awareness All officers must have continuous 15% monthly attendence to run We post a form in our house for all candidates. This is filled out by the cadidate and states amount of time served, all trainning, skills from personal life (jobs, military, other emergency service experiance, ect.) that you can bring to the table as an officer, and your vision and goals for the dept. as an officer. We also have anoymous ballots for voting. It is a sheet with boxes next to the candidates names stating check x number of names. This seems to create a situation where the best person for the position gets elected. With that said, volunteer elections will never be a perfect system.

I don't believe that the national certs or the NYS certs will be accepted. I have a ton of NYS certs and I know that the CT ciriculum is much different than any others. FF2 in CT covers many more subject areas than NYS or the National cert.

I had a 1044 defender and hated it. The eye shield came down and rested on the bridge of my nose. I'm currently wearing a Paul Conway American Classic. It's a lot heavier than the Cairins but is also more comfortable and sits better on the head. I would recommend the Conway if you don't mind the weight. If you do mind the weight than go with a 1010

My thoughts and prayers are with the officer and his family. I wish him the speediest of recoveries. Also, to everyone else in the emergency services out there, be careful, watch each others backs on scenes and never assume cars see you and will yield.

I think that us volis that are in it for the right reasons know what we signed up for. Those guys that say they aren't compensated for what they do and the time that they sacrifice can resign and walk away anytime they want.

The exam applications are availible at the Riverfront Library (directly behind the DMV and in front of the Yonkers train station) from Nov. 2 - Nov. 28, where they can be submitted as well. On Nov. 28 the applications will be available online and at city hall. I believe the closing date is Dec. 23

The notice for the exam states that you must reside is Westchester to take the written exam and only Yonkers residents who pass the written portion will be invited to take the physical.

Maybe you are having a bad day, or maybe it makes you feel better about yourself to insult others, whatever the case may be, you have taken my comments out of context. I agree that you are better positioned for success with a degree. The point that I was trying to make is that college isnt the be all end all of success in life and I used an example of people who succeeded without it. Is it likly to get filthy rich without college? Not at all. Is is possible? Yes. I think drive and determination are two things that cannot be taught and come from within.

I am a believer that you create your own luck and any person and accomplish anything they want, as long as they keep their eye on the prize and strve toward that goal every day. I'm not suggesting these men should life coaches for anyone. I am backing up my statment with examples. They were simply examples of men without college who succeeded. I'm sorry. There is no need for arrogence.

I see your point, but I also think that it depends on the career path you choose. In order to be a doctor, an education is a must, but in order to be a sucessful businessman or entrepreneur, not so much. I have found that real world experiance is critical. You can't teach drive and determination. Bill Gates of Microsoft, Steve Jobs of Apple and Richard Branssen of Virgin Records were all college dropouts.

Agreed. The most that I took out of my schooling was communication skills with others and time management.

I am a person with a college diploma and am currently pursuing a fire career and I can honestly say that my college degree is only worth the paper that its printed on. Too many people stress college for everything now-a-days and dont realize that it may not be for everyone. I got a degree because i felt that it was what was expected of me and honestly, I didn't learn much at all. All of my skills in the business world were taught to me at my current job and were learned on the fly. Very rarely, if ever, do I come across an obsticle in my job and revert back to my schooling. With that said, I do feel that certain fields, such as Medical, Teaching, and Engineering are very technical and do rely heavily on schooling, but others, such as Business, Trades(electrical, construction, plumbing, ect) and Emergency Services are all about the kind of person you are by nature and on the job trainning and experiance. Also, Common Sense, a vital skill that many people are lacking, cannot be taught at any college or trade school. This is only one person's opinion, I apologize if I offended anyone.

I also operated a Pierce Tower Ladder during Truck ops and it is solid like a rock. Elmsford has a 1993 Pierce Arrow Tower Ladder and were nice enough to bring it to the FTC. Pierce has the most stable TL that I have ever been in.

SUV was T-Boned and flipped on to its roof. Driver (only passenger in the vehicle) was trapped inside the vehicle and was quickly extricated without the use of extrication tools. Engine 33 was put back in service after the victim was extricated, while Engine 35 and Tower Ladder 7 remained on scene to address fluid on the roadway and to secure the scene until the vehicle was towed.
