The reason for the age is not what you can do at 45 its what you can't do at 55 or 60. Fire and police jobs are young men's jobs. They are not for older people who hurt more and recover slower. That is why we have the 20 and out. Gov. Patterson is a fool for vetoing a law that gave new members this age for retirement. It will never save the state money but cost them money in the long run when you force someone to stay till they are old and grey and seek disability benefits for life on an injury that was job incurred. So it is not so simple to hire someone because the are the best for the job at a older age, there are other considerations.

Seth, you are a little unclear here. Is this a NYS civil service applicant? My understanding for most cut off ages is you must take the test before your 29th birthday not appointed by. You will recieve 1 year credit for every year of military service. So if you serve 4 years you will be able to take the test until 33. I am not sure how many years are the max IE you can't do 20 years and be able to seek employment till 49. If anyone can clear this up it would be great. You state he is 32 going on 33 and served time in the military. How many years? As for extending the list I do not feel it is right. We have the laws for a reason and they should be followed. How would it look if you held the list to get to someones son/daughter and others were not afforded the same chance.

You can not blame the 112 residents who "decided" for the rest of the residents, you have to blame the other 2888 residents who decided not to attend. I guess all 3000 did not want the program. The people have spoken.

I just want to wake up one morning and know that I will not have to fight city hall and the IAPBFF because I worked harder and studied harder than other candidates. I want to wake up one morning and go to work and not see a black firefighter or a white firefighter sitting across from me having coffee, but rather 2 brothers that I am willing to die for and will to make sure they will do the same for me. We are held by the same laws as a civilian. We have discussed this on this forum before. We all must drive with caution, wear our seatbelts and use good ol' common sense when we respond. The law does not care paid or volly you are on your own if you screw up.

Then why would you do it? Why would you risk your families future to drive around and respond when you know you are not covered. You can't reverse the question because you have a choice.

You were almost correct except that the 4 poor guys did not drive to the bar because they have no money. They called 911 and waited for FD and EMS to arrive and told them they had a rectal bleed and wanted to be transported to the hospital on the taxpayers dime. The lived 23 blocks from the hospital. When they arrived at the ER they were put in the waiting room and after about 1 minute they got up and walked out to meet the guys at the bar next door to the hospital.

I would like to comment on one opinion you have towards a statement I made. I never once said that a person is only entitled to a secure future if they choose civil service. I did say that I chose this path for the security of the system and to know my family is taken care of. I also never once complained when I saw all my friends making $300000.00 plus dollars on wall street for the last 6 years while I was only getting a 3 % raise a year. I chose my path and I am very proud of the path I chose. I will say I am sick and tired of the "unions" being in the spot light now and being blamed for no give backs or of all the money we are making. The unions did not create nor did civil service all the problems this country is having. Maybe someday those who created this mess will "MANUP" and take responsibility for what they have done.

The WSOTF was put together with federal money after the Sept 11 attacks on America. It was designed for a regional response from lower Westchester fire depts to have the same training, work under 1 incident command structure and deal with WMD's, mass decon, and any other hazmat situation from a terror attack. The idea was the first in the country and was even written about in fire engineering. We are able to respond immediately if needed to any such call with the most up to date equipment and highest level of training to accomplish the goal. The technical rescue part had nothing to do with the original concept but was probably added to make it a better service to the public. The FD's included are: New Rochelle, Yonkers, Mount Vernon, White Plains, Greenville, Hartsdale, Greenburgh, and Eastchester.

I don't think I could make any good suggestion on how to handle 10 inches of straw but I will say that jumping off the bucket onto that "BRUSH FIRE" on the roof is about as stupid as jumping out of a perfectly good airplane into the middle of a wildfire.
