  1. Do you really think the dispatch should sound like this? Sector 9 Sector 11 respond to a reported structure fire at 234 maryjane lane FD has been notified. We all know PD will respond to a call much faster than FD. Fact of life and non disputable. Yes we are all in it to help. I would also think that those of us who have made a legit rescue ( i do have a class 2 from my job ) don't consider themselves a hero. As a matter of fact at the job i was awarded the medal from I avoided the press like the plague. Thats not why I do it and I would like to think it's not why 95% of this forum does it. Do you really want to put yourself in a position to which you are not trained and be remembered as a hero? Do we really need to pull up to a job and have to pull 2 cops out first before the people that occupied the home. You can bet your last paycheck it will be the cop I'm grabbing before the civilian. We can't do it all and the uniform comes first. I just can't believe that professional people on this forum have their heads buried this deep in the sand. They did not drive past this call, they were dispatched to it.
  2. As for this post it has nothing to do with the original topic. I have stopped to offer assistance at plenty of car accidents and would expect other trained professionals to do the same. It's apples to oranges here my friend
  3. Wow have you guys clearly misunderstood the intentions of the story. I for one have no personal problem with any law enforcement agency or specific law enforcement officer. I have countless friends who are cops in just about every agency in our local area. When you guys jump all over the "FD hates PD " bandwagon it is time to look in the mirror and ask yourself WT heck. The bottom line of my posting was to have the people who put themselves and others in harms way when they are not suited to maybe step back a little and think. I really don't give a rats behind about the ones who defend these types of actions. There will never be any type of incident that will change their minds. It must be the capes that are handed out at graduation. It's the ones I will never read about that the message sunk in. Just because the public hates cops does not mean that fire personel does as well. Pathetic!!!!
  4. So first things first. Is there any update on the Rye cops who were transported from the CO call in Rye? I hope they are recovering well. Is there anyone who can fill us in on this incident? On scene members who can help those who still believe this is a routine call. I am pretty sure I can figure out how things went here after responding to more CO calls than I can count. If this went the way I think it went it could have gone south real fast for those RPD members. Once in a while the pot does need to be stirred or we will burn the food!!!!
  5. So maybe the preaching of wait for FD is the wrong way to look at this? If the PD gets a report of a hostage situation, a bomb threat or riot I would assume they would show up dressed and prepared to work. Why is it that PD is dispatched to a CO call with no equipment? Can we not see the forest through the trees here? The problem was not the fact that these 2 cops rescued the family but the dispatch to a potentially deadly situation to themselves. I still have not been told that this is how the call came in but if it was dispatched that way they are not heros but cowboys putting themselves in harms way. What kind of union would allow their members to continue to be sent to calls out of thier training and not properly suited? PD is dispatched to plenty of calls that are fire related or ems related and not police related. If "cooking the books" for call volume requires someone to enter a situation that they are not trained for, then that is the underlying problem. This is not a FD vs PD or Volley vs Paid topic. It is about risk vs reward and returning home to your family.
  6. I was hoping to hear from someone on scene about this call. As helicopper said, was this a dispatched CO call? If it was then I would say there is no reason for PD to enter the home prior to FD arrival unless they are trained and suited for such a call. I know we have the same thing happen in New Rochelle sometimes when PD arrives before FD on calls and they enter. I am not bashing them just stating a fact. Why would we want to show on scene first with no training and have the public expect us to do something? They don't really care what uniform you wear they just want help. That is where the trouble can start for an untrained person. I learned this basic fact from an old salty chief I chauffeured when his aid was off. I would race to the call to try to get him there. One tour he asked me " when we beat the Engine or Truck to the job what are we gonna do " ? People will be screaming and yelling and you and I can't do a thing until the rest arrive. Wow did that stay with me!!. He wanted me to time our arrival with first due companies and start the show from there If this were truly an unknown medical than maybe they didn't know what they were involved with
  7. I think the Capt did ask for help in the beginning. just another jerk civilian getting in the way trying to look for a lawsuit. No need to work America, just sue whoever you want to get ahead!!!!
  8. DFD is not using drones in the fire dept. They still use water and B@LL$ not to mention the closure of about 15 companies a day and the workload of all of NYS in 1 tour! They don't have the money to cover our brothers pay checks right now so I doubt they are flying drones. Here's to Riggs and the brothers in the wolfs den!!!
  9. I would say with the turntable of the first TL in line with the trees it was useless to start with.
  10. Structure fire: any fire within or attatched to a structure. Working fire : any fire not within or attatched to a structure Is it harder than that?
  11. Do you really believe this was an extrication 101 call? I am on the job 17 years and have yet to encounter this type of call. Not really sure if they had to extricate any patient from this call but if they had I would bet my pension it was far from " 101 ".

  13. You know why the Trucks open the roof right????? To see the real fireman at work!!!!!!!! Guess I need to change my name now.
  14. Did anybody ever consider the fire started above the bedrooms in the attic? It could burn up there undetected for quite some time before a failure of the trusses brought a collapse into the living area of the home. How many of you have smoke detectors in your attic? The term fully involved is used quite a bit and misused a lot more. If fire was showing from only upper windows and the roof was burned through you make your own conclussion. I was not there and I will thank God for that. My thoughts to Capt Sullivan and his family and the entire Carmel community.
  15. Do you really believe that statement? Do you really believe that the vollies in the city are better trained than the FDNY? Come on now. That may be one of the most ridiculous statements made here and yes you are entitled to your opinion. And as for your last statement I ask....... Your not?
  16. Do you really feel that way with your statement? There comes a point when we must draw a line in the sand. Have you ever come off a real $h!tty 24 and said I need my 72 to recoup? Don't you think we want to spend quality time with our families? Don't you think that the fun of the siren and horns wears off after time and we really are at work? There is a thought in the fire service that we can reduce the number of employees to a certain number when it will becomes cost effective to hire overtime to man the spots and save on the benefits. This is a fact and it will work. Do you want to work every other day 24, away from your wife and kids ( some of you will answer yes ) and not have any kind of life? I don't and I am sure my Brothers from Scranton don't. So the fact is we are not millionaires who have money to burn. We want to get away from the crap for a few before we have to dive back in.
  17. If you are a member of L273 you should know the answer to that. If you are not a member then this is not the forum to explain our contractual work schedule.
  18. My opinion is they will get pink slips again next year. L12 is still browned out during 2011 and would think be browned out in 2012 when the overtime budget is used.
  19. Yes we were put to the test last night with a small basement fire confined to what amounted to a "wine cellar". All concrete walls and fully intact ceiling with no extension to the upper floors. Room and contents fire. We held it with 3 and 2 but the second truck should have been 2 Truck which was closed. TL 11 came from a further distance and things could have been different with people trapped at 02:00 hrs and extension to the upper floors. But what do I know I am just a stupid union firefighter.

  21. Sorry Brother, we remembered them in October at our annual memorial service. This really sucks for our job and those members involved. When are the people going to get it!!!! It does not cost that much for police and fire protection. The school budget is 64%, the county budget is 18% and the city budget is 18%. Your taxes do not go to public saftey as much as they go to the schools. please stop lumping us into the same category. This is BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  22. CPVC will not expand but I get your drift Chief.
  23. Just a little off topic here but I ended up in Newburgh Sunday morning after getting bad directions to my sons soccer game in New Windsor and ended up at the fire house @ Broadway and 217?. Stopped to ask the Brothers for some directions and they were closed. Was this house shut down? I do remember protesting with the 5th district last winter for our brothers and thought they had "won the battle". Whats the story up there? Coulda used that company that night!!!!!
