NYS has passed a law to identify commercial structures with a placard. I wish I could find it to attach. It will tell you roof and floors built with truss construction. Large homes with monster roofs and commercial buildings new churches with large roofs. If you don't think conventional lumber can span the roof you are looking at then most likely its truss construction.if you are working a roof and cut your hole and find 24 inches between beams it's truss construction and you better get off first and notify the IC second

You should look,feel and listen. Is the floor sagging, water rolling toward you or away.Is the floor spongy? Do you hear anything. Cracking floor joist not just the fire, furniture falling. Do the duck walk with 1 leg forward feeling the floor. Is this new construction cause if it is you can bet your last dollar its a TGI (wood I beam). Know whats going on in your respose area with construction and follow the 5 minute rule brothers if it's exposed for 5 minutes IT WILL FAIL. And we should all assume its been going for 5 minutes. This type of construction will surely start to take the lives of firefighters in higher numbers than we are seeing now so watch your a** and your brothers!!!!!!!

If the volunteers are anything like the career guys you have 10% of the members doing 100% of the work. This will go on till the end of the fire service and the end of the world. It is very tough to keep the interest in people when they feel as though they are being taken advantage of. I have no advice at this time but will ponder the thoughts tonight.

res6cue, Thanks for clearing that up for me. I read the report 3 times and still came out confused. This was not a career vs vollie bash in any way I just misunderstood what was being said here that's why I ask for some help.

I am a little confussed by this news report and would like some help in understanding it. There is an all volunteer fire dept that covers suny purchase and is worried about the state regulations that they have to answer all fire alarms recieved from that location. They use to just answer actual fires only from what I took out of the artical. The on duty security would notify the fire dept if it was a real fire or false alarm. Being a career firefighter I do not understand the logic behind delayed responses I.E. security calling before we respond if it's a true emergency. Do the volunteers only want to go to put on the blue lights and go to fires? The volunteers are always complaining that the "Professional" firefighters are putting them down. We always hear that we are all professionals wether career or volunteer. This artical clearly shows the difference because career firefighters don't call security at college campuses to check the status of the alarm. We respond as if it was an actual fire. In New Rochelle we are at Iona, CNR, and Monroe college all the time. We don't complain, its our job. My whole rant here is about the quote from the purchase fire chief. "In the past, whenever an alarm went off, campus police would check it out first, then call us if it turned out to be a real fire," said Purchase Fire Chief Joe Brefere. "But as we learned last week, every time a smoke detector goes off, now the call has to go out and we have to roll." They should have responded to every call that was received and not pick and choose what we feel like going on. If you can't handle the volume of calls then I guess you will have to explore other avenues like career firefighters.

This whole topic comes down to driver training. We need to make all aware of the potential dangers in driving the rigs. I speak from a paid fire voice when I say that the job should offer more awareness to the members. In New Rochelle everyone is "qualified to drive" if you know what I mean. We are expected to know and understand operations of the rigs. I don't know what is expected from the vollies on this subject but I will say that continued education and training is the only way to get this across. I will also say that I don't want to be the one who kills a civilian or one of my brothers who are with me because of a stupid accident that could have been avoided.

You read about a police officer (I am not bashing cops!!!!!) who bangs on doors to let people know there is a fire in a building.Rescue or removal? A team of firefighters finds a jumper on the roof of an exposure of a building (no longer in immediate danger of the fire) and take him away in a stokes from a 1 story exposure. Rescue or removal? 2 firefighters find a person unconscience in a bedroom of an apt fire and take him to safety. Rescue or removal? I could go on but I am sure you get the meaning.

I have been seeing alot of rescues as of late and was wondering what everones idea of a rescue is and their idea of a removal?

You guys are unbelievable with the varsity crap. Try coming to work for a job that has 3 guys on an engine ( Boss, Nozzleman, Driver) and 3 guys on a truck ( No boss most of the time, driver , front seat, jumpseat). And we are better off than some other jobs. Guys, until you show me facts that the fires are hotter in NYC than in other parts of the world stop blowing smoke up FDNY's BUTTS. They fight fires just like everyone else. And just to let you boys in on some facts they are living off the old days like everyone else in the fire service the work is not there like it use to be. As far as fog nozzles in high rise jobs, TPWS please tell me what companies were stupid enough to switch to a fog nozzle downtown because there was to much fire blowing on top of them. And if they did switch I will bet my last dollar they didn't make it to far down the hallway without severly burning themselves. While I agree it is a disgrace for the fire service leaders to not supply the men with what they need you should still go out and buy your own rope. It is better to have it and get out than to fight with city hall about getting it when you really needed it.

New Rochelle uses 2- 75 foot long 2 inch hose with a smooth bore nozzle per engine company. All engines are required to bring them in. I think anything less would be dangerous to all companies operating. All standpipe bags contain a plumbers wrench for missing wheels, 2 1/2 by 1 1/2 adaptors for standpipes, gate valves, and spanner wrenches. Lets not forget to flush the standpipe before connecting because you never know what the creatures have been shoving up there that will now get stuck in the nozzle. All truck companies are required to bring in a length of 2 1/2 to a high rise fire and give it to the engines if needed. The goal is to put out the fire boys not piss it off. So put away your task force tip nozzles and 1 3/4 lines and let the trucks worry about venting. We don't need no stinkin' fog nozzle to vent

From what I understand from the old salts who have almost all retired by now, 6 engine in New Rochelle was the "flying squad". They went to all jobs in the city and crawled in with their tanks to relieve the guys at the nozzle without tanks. From what I have been told was they very rarely used the tanks because of the cost to fill them at Allens sports shop. I was also told by a retired deputy chief that they lost 6 engine to put in all new sidewalks on Main st and they took the money from fire to pay for that project. Nice to see wa are appreciated for what we do.

Here is my 2 cents. You are now the junior man which is not far from probie. The only difference is now they need a reason to fire you wheras before they could do it for any reason they wanted. When you are working you should address all officers as they are ie Deputy, Captain, or LT. When you are off duty you can address them on a first name basis except the Chief, he should always be called Chief. If you can not draw the line between on duty and off duty you should address all officers by their rank. You cannot become to comfortable in calling them by their first name and think you can get away with it on scene. When you are out of town you should always address them by their rank because they have earned that right. (remember it is only a phone call away to your Chief,Capt, or Lt from "that other depts officer") In time, as you get more time on the job and watch the guys you work with move up the ranks you will know what is the right and wrong thing to say. Congratulations on getting off probation:D
