With the rising gas prices one would assume that a lot of other things within the communities we serve in will be affected , and nothing will be done to correct them. I'm assuming this reimbursement program would be one of those things that won't get fixed.

jack- you make a very good point Putting PPE over a non-acceptable article of clothing does not make the unacceptable article acceptable This can be easier said than done for career depts, what about volunteers in the summer who roll out of bed at 4am and wear gym shorts under their bunkers and arrive at the automatic alarm that turns out to be a working fire? Wondering if people (myself included ) should plan ahead of time, or do we need better PPE and SOPS regarding proper clothing?

stamford ct just had a test for civilian dispatcher, I know greenwich just hired a bunch.

I'm sure many of you have heard about the issues with the take home cars w/ Bridgeport fire inspectors. I'm assuming that the GPS' installed in the cars were to cut down on mis-usage of vehicles. The vans seem a little more accommodating than SUV'S. According to the Greenwich Time, the town of Greenwich has put town seal's on all town owned vehicles to make them easier to spot for residents. Not sure if both of these are directly related to the rising fuel prices. The city of Stamford has a few sedans (dodge stratus') for take home vehicles. Personally, I don't see the benefits of the hybrid cars b/c of the maintenance required with the batteries a few years down the road. However I did get rid of my v8 GMC and got a v6 Toyota to deal with gas prices.
-
on a side note, I believe some of the agencies in the Town of Greenwich have begun experimenting with hybrid vehicles.

don't most departments require 2 in and 2 out?

I know we have discussed about how much everyone love's the leather boots instead of rubber boots. I have worn both, and like the leathers better. I'm looking into buying a new pair now and am probably going to get a pair of Warrington 5006's. However I wasn't sure if anyone has operated with the 10 inch zip up structural boots. I'm assuming they are just as comfortable, if not even more than the slip-ons. Would it be worth it to buy the zip-up's instead?
-
the only thing that worried me about the zip on's was if my pants were to slid up my leg and my leg would become exposed. I still have not tried them yet, and most likley gunna go with the warrington 5006's. The zip-ons look like they'd be comfortable, I'll have to try them one day if I ever get the chance!

if i could give you guys any advice it would be to train for it. at the orientation, i went through the course and failed the stairmaster. the good thing about CT is they let you "practice" the CPAT 3 times, and if you pass the first time you don't have to go back. i trained on the stairmill w/out a weight vest for 2 weeks and passed fine. Not gunna lie it's real hard, just listen to everything they say. One guy ahead of me failed for not having gloves on

i got mine off ebay, less than $5. i'm sure i got wripped off on shipping though

yeah, they need to respond to a certain percentage of alarms, and drills. they must be ff1 at a minimum.

I know of two depts here in CT that have dorms in the firehouses that allow firefighters to live in the stations. I also heard that Univ. Of Maryland FD has the same program set up
-
My town has a full time volunteer recruitment and retention officer, who handles all new applicants who are intrested in joining. the volunteer coordinator than fowards them to the stations closest to their home that they are intrested in joining. Around town there are signs in front of some of the firehouses, and there seems to be a lot of younger members.
