  1. Now THAT is something you don't see every day!
  2. Tractor trailers flip over all the time... Was there something about this that made it interesting? Was it a tank carrier?
  3. Then after the job the powers to be have to get together and hammer out the issue(s). The "crime scene" card can only be used so often before it's a case of chicken little. And what crime are we talking about? Labor laws? OSHA regulations? NYS Codes? Since when do the cops ever investigate those and declare crime scenes. If we are all going to do ICS, then there is no trump card like crime scene or potential fire so the chief's always in charge. We have to stop all the rhetoric and just do the job. It works well elsewhere, why can't it work here!
  4. I think it's 165/year now. I let mine expire a few years ago too (no need to keep it retired). Problem is even being a member you still have to pay for all their documents and publications.
  5. Are there any training requirements for fire officers in volunteer departments? I know there are required commissioner courses on the admin side but are there operational training or experiential requirements?
  6. What exactly is the purpose of a 12 FOOT digital clock and where do ya keep that? And a serious question, I've noticed one of the County's MDU trailers outside the 2nd Pct on Central Avenue lately. I thought it was there for Engine 307 as part of their haz-mat support role but when I looked closer, I saw that it had PD logos on it. Is the PD doing mass decon now?
  7. Your law enforcement example doesn't apply. The cops backing each other up are in their geographical areas of employment and aren't really "doing" anything. If it was a NY cop going to a burglary in progress call in MD it would be freelancing.
  8. That's like saying not all automatic alarms are fire calls. My question is how do you know when the actual fire or true medical emergency where minutes do count is going to occur? If we knew when that was going to happen we could all save a fortune by only staffing appropriately during those times. Is this any different than fire apparatus responding with one or two guys on it?
  9. If they were not requested, not dispatched, and not in their jurisdiction they most certainly were freelancing.
  10. Without knowing the terms of the grant and what the grantee is doing (generally reported periodically to the awarding body) with the funds it is impossible to answer your question. Sounds like you suspect something is amiss. If that's the case, report it to the agency that awarded the grant and let them investigate. Last I checked EMTBravo isn't empowered to conduct investigations into grant practices.
  11. I get that he's being investigated and is on modified duty. Same with any police involved shooting, right? Standard procedure. What I didn't get - until someone explained it to me - was why the EMS folks got suspended. If you took from my comment that I was siding with the suspect you're just wrong. I agree wholeheartedly that people need to be held accountable and be responsible for their own actions.
  12. Depends on the environment too. Urban settings generally have better success with UHF equipment and rural/open areas generally do better with VHF.
  13. Did anyone call 60 or the EMS office and ask them?
  14. Can you summarize? It isn't really clear to me why the EMS folks got desk duty. The cop I get it.
  15. The article said this wasn't even a traffic stop. He was assisting a motorist who's car was broken down. Glad to hear he's OK. Too many LODD and LODI lately!
  16. Oh my gosh! I can't believe everyone is ignoring the point that WCR was making. Read what the article says! The PUBIC instead of PUBLIC! In a freakin' newspaper article. That's some funny stuff right there and everyone just went on auto-pilot into the same BS that drags this site down time after time. WTF?!?!?!?!?!
  17. Yes, but FD's with budgets over 300K are required to have an independent audit. This is the case in Yorktown, there budget is over 1M. It appears, by looking at their 2013 preliminary budget and the statements in their article, that they have a reserve fund equal to a full year's operating budget. Interesting facts, no judgements, just facts.
  18. So almost 1/3 of the department's budget goes to the reserve fund. Is that a normal amount or is that unusually high? If they're budgeting so much that 30% doesn't get used and goes to the reserve fund, shouldn't the taxpayers get a break?
  19. It has been voted down 4 times by the taxpayers of the district. That's telling enough for me. Barry's correct, they did say this station - despite it's price tag - would be mostly for storage since they have few members in that part of town. The taxpayers have spoken but I'm willing to bet there will be a 5th referendum or an attempt to bypass that with the use of "surpluses" from prior year's budgets.
  20. Truck4 has been gone for more than 3 years. He's still on the list.
  21. What about some of the old-timers like alsfirefighter, helicopper, NY10570?
  22. What were the criteria for selection here? There are some hall of famers who aren't included?
