1. The light bar is almost as big as the vehicle and would probably reduce any savings in fuel economy as it would create more drag and cause the engine to work twice as hard.
2. Maybe he is in hibernation until the heat passes. One must remember he is a transplanted Yankee and not native to Texas.
3.

No problem, besides I have been retired so long I don’t remember if I still have a pair of handcuffs lying around. Seriously, it depends on whether they set up a new district or they contract for services. If they contract, you may be out of luck. These and many other issues would have to be worked out in considering consolidation. But that is way, way, way down the road. Let’s just sit back and see how this plays out! I think if they move forward this could be another Stamford in the making. That means we may all get toasters!
4. I guess we can answer the above questions as Pelham caught a job this morning: From the EMT Bravo IA (Note, I did not listen to this incident live. Info below is from nycfire.net) 01:13 hrs: M/A New Rochelle E-23/L-13, Mount Vernon E-5/L-3 to the scene. 01:15 hrs: M/A Eastchester Engine and Greenville L-4 to cover Pelham. 01:19 hrs: Car 2361 requests re-tone for additional manpower. 01:22 hrs: Car 2361 reports fire appears to be K/D. 01:28 hrs: Car 2361 reports fire is K/D, checking for extension. Holding New Rochelle's M/A. LTFDNR: I guess you had better think about sprinklers for your house. Station 1 is a long way away.
5. If this were to happen, will the residence of XYZ department be bumped to The City of New Rochelles residecy list if they took the New Rochelle Firefighter exam a few months ago? Or will Pelham still hire from the Westchester County Towns and Villages lists?
Come on, They are just talking about the possibility of authorizing a study. They have not even started talking to the other municipality yet. Let not start talking about what drapes to buy or the lettering on the trucks yet!
6.

What, are you kidding, two more replys and I get a toaster!
7.

You have to look at where this is coming from for the answer. It appears that the group that is pushing for the study involves taxes. They probably believe that they can reduce the tax burden to the New Rochelle taxpayer by a consolidation. I guess we will have to wait to see how the report says they can accomplish this and if it is worth it to the City residents.

8. According to The Journal News: The City Council will consider Tuesday paying for a study into whether the city would benefit from combining its Fire Department with one from a neighboring community. The do not identify which one. Nor are any details provided. http://www.lohud.com/article/20120709/NEWS02/307090020/New-Rochelle-considers-fire-department-consolidation-study?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|Frontpage|s
9. It appears that the electrical service to a houseboat may be the cause. Many marinas provide electrical power to boats. Are these connections inspected and maintained on a regular basis? Electricity and water is a disaster in the waiting. http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/07/04/12565187-3-children-electrocuted-while-swimming-in-lakes-3-drown-in-river?lite
10. See my post from yesterday about the ruckus caused by a fake cigarette in London abord a mega bus. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-stoke-staffordshire-18728246
11. Another reason to ban smoking on busses. Police said they received a "genuine report" of vapour escaping from a bag. A police source told BBC Radio WM a passenger was seen pouring a liquid into a box, which then started smoking. Staffordshire Police said the coach stopped on the hard shoulder "of its own accord" at 08:20 BST and was boarded by armed officers. Military personnel, police dog handlers, firefighters and other specialist units were also at the scene. About four hours after armed officers arrived, police confirmed the scene as safe. Shortly before 1500 BST the M6 Toll reopened. For more info: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-18719962 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-stoke-staffordshire-18728303
12. Many of the fields are locked or closed by municipalities to keep them from being ruined, due to cutbacks, to prevent the neighbors from complaining or for the liability issues of an unsupervised game. Dodge ball is banned in most schools. Riding bikes, who has one today and those who do are sometimes are limited by parents as to where or when they can ride.
13. LoHud is reporting that: Authorities say they now believe two skydivers plunged to their deaths in upstate New York last week after the helmet worn by a first-time jumper struck his instructor in the throat, incapacitating him. http://www.lohud.com/article/20120621/NEWS02/306210023/Helmet-hit-eyed-cause-skydive-deaths-Chappaqua-man-instructor?odyssey=mod|mostview Sad that a piece of equipment that is intended to save lives may have done the opposite!
14. Guys, if the issue is a real concern you have a few options. 1) Equip your vehicles with an EZ pass and play catch up with the Thruway Authority (TA) at a later time. This could be a nightmare for you and the State if you enter and exit at the same toll plaza or enter from a gate and exit at a toll plaza. 2) Send an official Departmental letter to the Governor about your concerns with regard to delayed response due to having to wait in line in toll plazas for a ticket as you don’t have EZ pass on your trucks due to Departmental policy. Include the point that your drivers have concerns about the possibility of being arrested for toll evasion should they respond on an emergency and do not carry cash in their bunker gear. (This may be a stretch but toll evasion is a prosecutable offence.) There should be a statewide policy and procedure for emergency vehicles responding to or using a toll road in order to save lives. Maybe as earlier suggested, the State should issue an orange EZ pass tag for all emergency vehicles. But that would be up to the powers that be to decide. And a previous poster is correct, taking it out on a lowly toll collector is not the proper thing to do. It was a bit of sarcasm and I apologies for my suggestion.
15. NYS Thruway regulations provide for the free passage to any call on the thruway and returning from the call. However, If your vehicle does not have a plate how are they going to come after you. And if they try, Hello Channel 7.An old trick to remember: If you lean on the siren while approaching the toll plaza and keep it going until you get to the toll taker, the 2QB takes a long time to wind down. Do that a few times and see how fast you will be waved through in the future.
16. Oh Bull.Unfortunately as each year passes the blow becomes softer and softer and the mention will become less and less. It’s up to us to ensure that this event will never be forgotten even when all of the participants have long faded away. I will get off my soap box now.
17. I had the opportunity in visiting the Normandy beaches a few years ago. Unfortunately the area has turned into a tourist area and is complete with gift shops, hotels and golf courses. There are a few small museums and a lot of WW II pieces scattered around. They did leave many of the bluffs and the American Cemetery alone. I have to say that the American Cemetery is a magnificent monument to all those who died. Someone (not sure who maintains it) does a wonderful of maintaining the site. And this is a fitting tribute to those who are buried there. When you are in the cemetery, the amount of loss of life hits home. You really can’t put the day into perspective until you see all those graves, row after row after row. It is truly a shame that so many people had to die so we can sit behind a computer and complain in English about someone or thing without fear of the secret police taping you on the shoulder. Each Memorial Day we have parades and services for those spilled their blood to give us these freedoms, but we should say a short prayer of thanks today for those who died in such large numbers for our freedom.
18. Sprint is sending out notices to its Nextel customers that the Nextel/iDEN network will be shutdown on or about June 30, 2013. This is to migrate existing customers to the Sprint /CDMA network. For details visit www.sprint.com/nextelnetwork.
19. Having a member of the public see a Face Book page open in a vehicles computer may be embarrassing. They may call into question the necessity of computers in the vehicles, but let’s broach a more serious issue. If someone can see a Face Book page, what else can they see? Does your vehicle computer have access to sensitive information? Can they get building plans, homeowner’s information, employee records, past call database with patient information? Do you see were I am going with this? With the improvements in information technology an emergency provider’s computer may have almost unlimited access to some very sensitive and confidential information. What steps have you taken to secure your lap top? · Is the password protected (with a strong password)? Is it changed at regular intervals? · Screen saver automatically engages and locks requiring a password after a few minutes? · Device installed to limit the screen angle of viewing? · Do you have software to encrypt the hard drive so that if someone steals the computer or hard drive it’s useless? I m not looking to start a new thread asking for what security measures that you use, they should be part of the department’s security policy and not revealed to the public (or EMT Bravo). You should have a security policy in place before you turn on a single computer including those in a vehicle. But if your department does not have a security policy or taken measures to safeguard your data and computers, you are asking for more serious issues than someone reporting that a MOS was wasting resources by viewing Face Book or playing Solitaire on a municipal computer.
20. The problem with using a zipcode is that in some areas this is not an accurate indication of what department covers what area. Thus the coverage can vary within the same zipcode. The Postal Service drew the lines not based on municipalities but what the office could handle. For example the Scarsdale zipcode covers Scarsdale, and parts of New Rochelle, Town of Mamaroneck and at one point parts of Yonkers and Greenburg. Parts of North Yonkers have a village zipcode. Parts of New Rochelle have a Larchmont zipcode. The Larchmont zipcode covers the Village of Larchmont, Town of Mamaroneck and parts of the Village of Mamaroneck. Confusing isnt it.
21. BRS Ballistic Parachutes makes parachute deployment system (Ballistic parachute system) that can be installed new or retrofitted into older aircraft. Currently they provide units for Cessna and Cirrus. They have a website for first responders: http://brsparachutes.com/first_responders.aspx In Cessna’s, when activated, the parachute is deployed by a rocket and blows out the rear window. An un-deployed rocket can be dangerous if disturbed or found at a crash site. They also have a guide for emergency responders http://brsparachutes.com/files/brsparachutes/files/First%20Responders.pdf

23. The only real winners in this action is the lawyers.
24. Sure, Now we will have to issue silver bullets, garlic and wooden stakes.
25. Police further report that they were the most mellow alligators that they have ever come across. The police were originally tipped off when they intercepted numerous orders for raw chicken pizzas to be delivered to the site.
